Let me start off this review by saying, I generally like to keep this things as unbiased as possible. I say this, because I am not going to be able to manage that with this game. I love it. I was immediately hooked in from the very first simple introduction cut scene and basic concept of gameplay, until the very last upgrade and battle. From the charming 8-bit art to the nostalgic music and sound effects, this game is going to get it's hooks into ANY old school gamer like myself.
I was extremely skeptical of the idea of a tile matching puzzle RPG on paper I assure you. Just writing that sentence to me seems like those are things that just should not mesh well. Somehow though, they pulled it off with aplomb. The core gameplay outside of the hub area (a prison cell of some sorts) is a cleverly timed puzzle game. On the top of your tile area you have your 8-bit character battling through hordes of monsters, opening chests and doors, and various other things. If he messes up or takes to long to attack, he is sent further to the left of the screen, while successes send him further to the right. Because the pace increases the longer you stay in the level, it becomes harder and harder to dispatch obstacles in order to stay alive and keep moving forward for the bonuses.
While you are on your run however, you will match stone and wood tiles, as well as collect gold and experience from battles with monsters and specific quests to accomplish during the run. With these, you repair your little prison hub, so you can improve your character. This is where the game goes from fun little time passer, to something I actively played while at home. Renovating and upgrading your character improvement rooms so you can invest your gold in upgrades for your character is extremely addictive. You can improve your characters defense to lessen the effective monster's blows have on you, or upgrade your damage output for physical or magical attacks and items. One of my absolute favorite things about this aspect of the game, is that it is not pay to play! There are no short cuts, and so no unfair advantages at all. It's just old school fun.
I got this game during a free app spotlight sale, but if I had to buy it just to keep playing it, I would do it in a heartbeat. It's just that good! Give it a try if you're a fan of old school games and it will wow you just as much as it does me.
This game has some of the worst mechanics of any puzzle game I have ever played. During many attempts there was no way to match any symbols by dragging an entire row. Makes no real sense to design the game play in that way contrary to all that has been established in other past games. A fundamental of good game design is to employ mechanics that are easily learned and previously established or new ones that improve the mechanic. Also am I the only person that knows this retro game look is not appealing, I have game design students that fall into the same aesthetically disappearing look maybe because they really never played those games. Honestly if I wanted to play a retro game I would play the best games of that era not a game just because it is old, it actually has to be a good play. In the end save your money and purchase a fun puzzle game.
This game is a Match 3 game but with an RPG/Adventure twist that slightly alters the game. The goal is to get 10,000,000 points, which you accumulate by going through various levels of a dungeon.
Every time you play, you accumulate points (which finishes the game), Gold, Lumber, Experience, and Stone.
Gold is used to upgrade your equipment. Experience is used to add "bonuses" to the game. Lumber and Stone are used to upgrade the shops, which gives you better upgrades for your equipment.
This game was fun at first and it definitely gives you a nice change compared to most Match 3 games, but it gets really repetitive after a while. You see, as you progress through each dungeon the monsters get tougher & tougher. To equalize that, you have to upgrade your equipment & obtain the bonuses. What I noticed after playing the game all the way through, is that the game scales with the equipment and becomes no different really than when you first played. For example at the start, you have your standard equipment and you take considerable damage. Moving to each dungeon thereafter means you MUST upgrade your equipment, otherwise you get killed too quickly. What you will find is that you have to "grind" the previous levels or the one you're working on over & over until you have enough gold to buy your upgrades.
Also, the "achievements" that are at every level are simply for you to find means to acquire the resources faster. It has no bearing on progressing to the next dungeon.
With all that said, the game is fun but is highly repetitive and after you're done, I would find it hard to play over again. To me, the game has no replay value.
Jejeje
