- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2013I really thought this was going to be some piece of junk that didn't work but the price was so low I thought I'd try it anyway. If by some miracle it did work then maybe I'd be able to slice a fresh pineapple in less than a day.
By some miracle it does work and with this tool it takes about a minute to slice a pineapple. I just finished using it for the first time and am pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to use. You just cut the ends off of your pineapple, center the corer/slicer over the core and press lightly while turning the handle. It wants to slice the pineapple and only needs a little encouragement from you. I had placed a plastic tuperware container in the sink and placed the pineapple in the container; I recommend you take some measure to capture the juices that will flow out.
So far I've just used it the one time. The pineapple I sliced was a little too big for the device so the hollowed out shell still had good pineapple left inside. I just sliced downwards through the shell to open it up and used a knife to carve out a couple of slices from the inside until I was satisfied. The procedure easily added another 30 seconds to the process so I guess it took about a minute and a half in total and then I was finished.
By far the most difficult part was figuring out what to do after the device had cored the pineapple and I was left with a corer that was wrapped in pineapple and stuffed with the pineapple core. If I hadn't thrown away the directions a month ago then this part might have been easier; as it was I sliced vertically through the slices to remove them. That's when I noticed that the handle has two buttons which, when depressed simultaneously, will remove the handle from the rest of the corer thus allowing the sliced pineapple to slide off and the core to slide out. Oh well now I know.
The other thing to be aware of is that if the device is not centered correctly you will get some juicy pineapple attached to the core section and some tough core attached to the sliced pineapple rings. This happened to me in a very minor way and next time I'll know better. Anyway I noticed that the top part of the core tastes good and it's only the bottom end of the core that was really tough, at least with the pineapple I used today. I don't remember how much of the core was edible with hand-peeled and cored pineapples; I just remember that the task was time-consuming, painful, and messy, and resulted in some pretty mutilated looking chunks of alleged pineapple. The rings that come off this slicer/corer are as regular as the rings from a can.
I hope you like your peeler/corer as much as I and I hope this review helps with your decision to purchase.
Peace...
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2015I got this because it was inexpensive and figured it was worth a try. It really is as simple as cutting the top off the pineapple, pushing the serrated center of the tool into the center of the pineapple and twist while pushing a little. In moments you have a long spiral of pineapple you can pull out with the tool. I use the knife I cut the top off to cut down two sides of the spiral which gives me a bunch of crescent shaped pieces of pineapple. Once you pull out the cut pineapple, you have a nicely hollowed out pineapple and usually a couple ounces of pineapple juice inside. I am sure you could use the pineapple husk to serve tropical drinks if you are so inclined. The first time I tried to use it I was a little skeptical, so moved slowly and from the time I pushed the cutter into the top of the pineapple to having it completely cut was about a minute. Having used the tool a few times, I can now do it in about 20-30 seconds.
The delivery did take about a month as noted by several other reviews. When it arrived it was in a padded envelope so I was a little concerned it may have been damaged. Once removed from the packaging it was just fine. Be aware that the blade can be pretty sharp and the small center bit is serrated and can pretty sharp if grabbed the wrong way. None of this is worse than other kitchen implements, but worth being aware of. All in all, I was very please with the quality and ease of using this tool. If you can deal with the long delivery time I think you will be happy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2017My first order from China didn't show up at all, but Rienar was very good about promptly sending another package. It takes about 2 weeks to arrive as its coming from China. The pineapple peeler itself does what its intended to do, but it definitely isn't high quality like the ones at Williams-Sonoma. I cant complain though, because the price is really good. I ordered 3, one for my sister, mom, and myself. This item really does make peeling pineapples so much easier and faster, but you do waste the fruit that is on the outside of the blade. Note: the metal edges are sharp! When removing the handle you have to press in the black prongs and you can seriously pinch some skin off, so be very careful! For the price, I do recommend, but don't expect anything great, just simply cheep and usable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2015I really think this to be the most awesome kitchen gadget in recent modern history -- even better than the can opener that dulls the sharp edges of a can somehow by cutting it on the side.
Some of the 1-star reviewers tell serious horror stories about this product, which leads me to the perception that the manufacturer has improved its quality, since mine didn't match the bad-rated ones and terrible descriptions. Still, I've used it only once thus far and do not foresee any problems coming in the near future unless I were to make the mistake of washing it in the dishwasher.
You really, really need one of these if you eat pineapple. You won't have to core another pineapple with a sharp or a dull blade. You won't have to peel the pineapple gradually. At the maximum, you got to cut off the ends and maybe do a touch-up on one or two of the rings with a little detail knife.
Be warned -- final product comes out in spiral form, not cut into "individual rings," but this shouldn't be a problem. Cutting down the side, the rings ought to hold form nonetheless when scrunched back together.
You'll want to be advised of the two welds at the bottom that hold the starter outer edge on. These were the most obvious things capable of failing first. But it could be years or decades. The implement -- I loved the grip and thought it was a cinch to finish the pineapple.
I can't say enough things about this wonderful little kitchen implement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun
If you like fresh pineapple but find peeling it a chore, get one of these. Simple to use and very effective, it takes about 10 seconds to get the edible bit out of the inedible bit which I find a surprisingly satisfying experience!
