He's not chubby, he's just big boned!
I've been wet shaving for about 2 years and never experienced a Super Silvertip until now. Personally, I prefer firm brushes with lots of backbone for a good face lathering massage, so my top choices are Black Badger and Boar bristle brushes. After hearing good things about this brush on Shave Nook, I figured I'd give it a shot. Even if it is a Super Silvertip, the extra firm knot should make me happy, right? To put it simply, this brush is AWESOME SAUCE! I could speak about the density of the hairs or how firm the knot is, but the most noticeable thing about this brush is... ZERO BADGER FUNK. If you have ever used a badger brush before, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Every brush I've ever owned was never defunked. Companies often won't defunk a brush to help save money, which is understandable. Just the fact that Wet Shaving Products went the extra step to sterilize and defunk the brush is a HUGE plus in my book and it does not go unappreciated. Now then, onto the brush! BUILD QUALITY: When it comes to the density of the hair, the brush knot is filled to the breaking point. The pictures that Wet Shaving Products provide do it no justice. The extra firm version has a higher glue bump, so the hairs are less likely to move and open up after usage. My brush hardly lost 10 hairs on the first use... which is saying a lot because every other brush I've used has lost approximately 8 to 12 hairs on the first use... and those are all "normal" density brushes. The brush handle feels good in hand. It's got a bit of weight, so it doesn't float when submerged in the sink. The etching and logo are pretty well done, I took a fingernail to it to see if it would mar and it stayed on strong. PERFORMANCE: Softer hairs are known to be better with creams, but I decided to see how well Stubby would handle soaps. Test 1: Kell's Original Ultra Aloe (Ancient Sedona) - The softest soap I own, usually makes weak lather, but after a few swirls, Stubby made oodles of rich, creamy lather. All along, I thought the soap was bad, but Stubby proved otherwise. Enough lather for 4 passes. Test 2: Tabac - The hardest soap I own, gives even my black badger a hard time. A few swirls and I had plenty of smooth, creamy lather for 3 passes. Test 3: C.O. Bigelow Shaving Cream (Repackaged Proraso) - The only cream I ever use. Stubby made some of the thickest lather I've seen out of just a peanut sized amount of cream. I paid $44 and got the brush in two days (thanks Amazon Prime). By far, Stubby has become one of my favorite brushes. I can't say that the other reviews on the non-firm version are from legit reviewers or friends of the company, but at least this review comes from a verified owner... and this brush certainly rocks.

One wouldn't think that simply changing from a low end badger hair brush to a silver-tip badger hair brush would affect your shave that much, but one would be wrong. I switched from the Tweezerman (which is a fine starter brush to see if one will like the wet shaving method) to this Wet Shaving Product "Prince" brush hoping for a better lather and more luxurious feel on the face after about 2.5 years of wet shaving. I opted for this brush over the simliar Parker line because I did not like the look of the metallic shine at the bottom of their handles.

I immediately noticed a difference in the quality of the lather (I use Proraso). The lather was thicker and when applied to the skin, created a more robust and creamier barrier for the skin, which in turn provided a superior shave. The brush is certainly softer and feels great on the skin. Definitely worth the money if you intend to wet shave.

Two caveats: First, if you are a perfectionist, be prepared for some of the "WSP" emblem on the brush to be scratched off. I received one and about half was scratched off. I expected more from a quality brush and sent it back. I also contacted WSP and they said this marring can happen but should not be normative. I reordered one and it too was blemished, but only slightly. The rest of the emblem will not come off when I try to remove it with my fingernail, so I wonder how the emblem started to come off in the first place. Second, the brush handle (as mentioned in another review) is wider than most shaving brushes. I have the Col. Conk shave brush/razor combo stand and was considering replacing it so the WSP Prince would have a stand that it fit into, when I simply placed the brush in the stand where the hair and the handle meet. It fits my stand and this position will not affect drying.

All in all, a fantastic brush and worth the money. I would without hesitation recommend this brush to any wet shaver.

I just received the brush today - 4 day ahead of the scheduled delivery date - but I'm quite disappointed about the size of the brush. It's not as densely packed as I thought it would be based on the description and some of the reviews. It fanned out well but it looks bare. The brush also lacked the backbone that I expected. In other words, it's floppy when working through soap and applying the lather. I tested it with a soft shave cream, Art of Shaving, and it took about 5 minutes to build a decent bowl lather. I repeated this with a slightly firmer cream, Geo R. Trumpers, and again it took 5 minutes to whip up a decent bowl lather. Lost 4 hairs which was expected. I'm going to try it a couple more times before I decide if it should be returned. Currently, this brush rates 3 stars for the product because it lacked the density and backbone that I expected and a 5 on the shipping.

Edit: 1/9/16: I''ve now used this brush for 5 shaves and it's growing on me. I still think it's a bit floppy and it's not as dense I thought it would be. It's take a bit of work for decent bowl lather (2 shaves) but it's produces a solid face lather (3 shaves). This has moved up from a 3 to 4 star rating. Hair loss: 3 on shave 2, 2 on shave 3, 3 on shave 4, and 2 on shave 5 this is all expected.

Edit: 2/6/16: I've now used this brush another 10 shaves (I rotate with other brushes that I have). Overall, I still think this brush lacks the backbone that I was expecting from the product write-up. Other reviewers have commented on the hair loss and I've found this to be an issue. I've been tracking and it sheds with each shave anywhere between 3 and 11 bristles. I would currently rate this product 3.5 stars.

Edit: 4/14/16: I've now used this brush for nearly 4 months and I can say it's terrible. It's more of paint brush than shave brush, it has not backbone. This brush sheds...a lot! It loses badger hair with EVERY shave. With regular use - twice a week - I doubt that it will last another 12 months.

Edit: 5/11/16: This brush sheds at an alarming rate with every shave.

Edit: 8/10/16: Eight months after purchasing this brush and it is still losing hairs at an alarming rate: 9 hairs today. It's now barely in my brush rotation. I cannot recommend this product.

Edit: 6/27/18: It's been a couple years and I use about three times a month. This brush still sheds.

My first few uses of this brush convinced me that the bristles were escellent. Unfortunately, they keep falling out with further use. I hope this shedding stops soon,- if not, I'll be forced to switch to a better brand.

No smell. Soft yet firm. Great lather. Bit smaller than I expected when first opened, spread out nicely after a couple uses. Dense

Update: after nearly 2 years of use, I can only say this was an OK brush. It was great in the beginning but overtime it began to lose hairs at an alarming rate. I now lose half a dozen each time I use it. I would say about 20% of the bristles are gone from when I first bought it and that is unacceptable.

The only reason I gave this 4 and not 5 stars is because the handle is a little small for my hand and came with a chip in it. Inside the chip you can see that it's white plastic underneath the black coating, which is why I kept it figuring it's waterproof. It works beautifully, luxuriously and is an exceptional deal for the price. This is soooo much better than my old brushes and gives an amazing shave - it really does seem to improve my shave because the lather is so thick and rich and the brush feels so good on my face!!!
    Highly Recommended!!
