awesome tablet... not sure why all the bad reviews
Not sure what all the complaining is about. Once I figured out how to navigate the tablet everything was a breez . You need to search and add apps on the parents side (like angry birds, temple run, candy crush) then it will show up on the kids side. Easy peasy! My kids are not getting them until Christmas, but I spent a good portion of my day yesterday customizing and adding the things my boys would want. It is just a normal tablet with a kids section. My husband and I are really happy with it. My only complaint is that there isn't expandable storage options. And it would have been nice to receive an instruction manual as it took me a little while to get the hang of it, do it might be really difficult for someone that is not tech savvy
I have never reviewed a product before but I felt this product is being unfairly portrayed and hoped that my comments might help another parent who is on the fence about whether to purchase this device. I was also on the fence after reading some of the negative reviews but I am so glad I got this.
I really think whether or not this works for you depends on the age of the child and what your intended purpose is. My son is 5 1/2 and he is old enough to be taught to swipe the screen to access home page, switch between apps, etc. The interface is not as intuitive as the LeapPad (which he previously had) or even as simple as the Ipad. It may take some teaching to instruct your child how to move between games, books, etc. If this is for a young child this might be frustrating for the child and the parent.
The second aspect people seem to be disappointed with is the FreeTime Unlimited. No, at this time parents cannot filter the content that is available. Although all kid appropriate, it might not be applicable to your child depending on his or her age/gender/etc. When the FreeTime Unlimited is activated your child will be bombarded with a ton of available apps, books, shows. When a child touches an icon, that game or app or show begins to download to the device. Yes, he or she will probably click on everything and fill up the memory very quickly. Also, one must be connected to WiFi to stream movies and TV shows. Here is where the intended purpose of the device comes into play. If you want your child to have a portable movie player/TV then this device might not work for you. From what I have gathered, Kinde FreeTime Unlimited can be compared to a lending library in a sense. Since you are not paying for the app or the movie or the show you are simply "borrowing" it as long as you are connected to WiFi. If you are not connected to WiFi you do not have access to the media. Personally, I did not want my son to sit and watch shows and movies. I want him to read books and play educational apps. The cost of apps and books is so low that I simply disabled FreeTime Unlimited and purchased the specific content I wanted him to have access to. Problem solved. I can still use the FreeTime parental controls to manage his time and content but he doesn't have access to the unlimited library. Would I be annoyed and disappointed if I bought the device because of the FreeTime Unlimited? Absolutely! I did some quick math and if I purchased the HD 7, kid proof case and extended warranty separately I still would've spent more than I did by purchasing the Kids Edition Kindle. From a financial standpoint, I don't feel like I am losing money by not using the one year FreeTime Unlimited subscription.
The case is coloful and sturdy, the device is fast, the sound is awesome, the screen is beautiful, the apps seem to work just fine. I've only had a few days to play around on it but so far I am very pleased with my purchase!
My 2.5 year old daughter received this as a gift at Christmas (per our request) and it's been a big hit. I'm a fairly tech-forward dad, so I knew exactly what I was getting. It is just a regular Amazon Fire tablet, with one free year of Freetime Unlimited, a replacement policy, and a foam case. Here are my thoughts on each.
1. Amazon Fire Tablet - One reason we wanted this instead of a Leapfrog or other "child's tablet" is because the adults can actually use this tablet when our daughter is not. It's fully functioning, so we can switch the profile over for our owns apps and internet access. I think in the long-term, we'll use this much more than we would a Leapfrog. The charge is standard for a tablet, but remember that your child is probably going to leave it sitting on the couch playing a video while they're in the other room. Our daughter has already learned that when her 2 hours of play are up, it's time to play with something else.
The storage is quite low. While I was playing with it and trying to figure everything out, I filled up the storage in no time. After I did a factory reset and didn't download everything I saw, the storage is still fine after a month of play. So, that's the one negative I would have to say about it, but my daughter mostly watches videos over wifi which doesn't take up storage space. We limit the number of apps on our parent profiles so we don't waste space.
Because we don't download many apps and because we depend on wifi, this tablet isn't very useful out and about. At least, you need to plan ahead for that. So if you're making a road trip or bringing it to the store, make sure your child has some apps or books downloaded to keep them entertained. You can also buy the USB adapter and use a USB flash drive to watch movies in the car.
2. Freetime Unlimited - Our experience with Freetime to this point has been positive. I entered my daughter's age and it seems to pick out the apps that work for her. It's mostly princess books and Disney shows, which she loves. After one-year, the pricing isn't terrible, especially as a Prime member, so we'll probably stick with it. Freetime is a completely locked environment, so there's no worry about my daughter getting on the Internet or accessing YouTube.
One neat feature is that Freetime allows you to give children access to any of your own content. We use Netflix a lot and my daughter has a lot of different shows on there. I was able to download Netflix on my parent account, grant her access to the app via Freetime, and it shows up under her child account. Now, I can't prevent her from going into my queue and watching violent/action movies, but that's due to the Netflix app, not Freetime's limitation.
3. Replacement Policy - This is what makes this tablet "worth it" as a children's tablet. For two years if my child breaks the tablet, they'll replace it. Can't really beat that.
4. Foam Case - I'll admit, I laughed at the foam case when I first saw it, but it does its job. It's lightweight so that you don't feel like you're holding a brick. My daughter dropped her tablet twice in Walmart from the shopping cart and the case protected it with no issue.
Overall, I have no complaints. I wish there was more storage and I wish it was "Freetime Unlimited for Life," but ultimately this is a great tablet for my 2 year old to tote around, watch her shows, and free up the TV from Nickelodeon. As a bonus, my wife has stopped asking to use my iPad because she uses our daughter's Fire after she's gone to bed.
