I purchased this to work on scribbling imitation skills with our son, who has some specialized needs that have come with a great deal of sensory challenges. I had noticed a couple of weeks ago that he wasn't really looking at the paper, and it was the first time it struck me, you know, he looks away every single time, and I was talking to the fabulous Miss W because I thought maybe it was just overwhelming him too much visually with the lines appearing and the movement, and she mentioned maybe it was because the white paper appeared too bright and hurt his eyes. Mic drop. Miss W is a genius! So I bought these so I could have more paper to test out this possibility with.
So turns out, white paper reflects too much light and he finds it painful to look at, because he's actually willing to look at these as he scribbles. I paid 7.99 for a 4 pack of these. I didn't think that was an unreasonable price, although I probably could have gotten a comparable amount for cheaper at the store. But, I actually think the quality of this paper is much better then the construction paper I purchased last time from WalMart. I still had a few sheets of it left, and I don't remember the brand, but the paper I got at the store tears much easier, and the lines when it does are more fibrous. And since my little guy likes to try and chew on the paper, easier tearing isn't really all that desirable. The Melissa and Doug paper is also smoother, which I think works better for coloring with crayons. I also like that these are traditional construction paper colors, not the bright neon colors, because I think those also would end up reflecting too much light for him to look at.
What I will say is that if you are planning on using these for origami with your kiddo, I would recommend getting actual origami paper. This won't hold up to the folding and keep crisp folds...and the same holds true of any construction paper I've ever worked with. Even if it's tempting because it will save you money, if you're doing more complicated designs it will only end in heartache. I also wouldn't recommend this for paper curling crafts, but for simple child hood crafts like rings, woven strips, or cards I actually don't see a single thing wrong with the quality of this paper for that, and think it holds up better then the last stuff I purchased at the store by a long shot.
