I wrote this review originally at three months, but now it's one year and I'm reordering this pillow. I sweat a lot so I can't get the smell out of the foam. I still give it 5 stars. I'm sleeping much better. Only problem I have is when I have to use a normal pillow...
This solved my "snoring" issue conclusively. Read more to see if my sleep issue is the same as yours. If you can't solve your apnea with this or other products, do not hesitate to see your doctor and do a sleep study. Sleep apnea can be a life-threatening situation when not treated. And that's not counting relationship, career, and automotive troubles.
To clarify the air-quotes, I have an apnea that involves the collapse of my soft palate which forces exhaled air through my mouth. I can't sleep with an open mouth, so the air "puffs" through my lips audibly. It's enough to wake me and frequently my wife. The only way I could sleep is if I fell so completely asleep that I wasn't awaken by the first puff in those critical first seconds.
I was about to have a sleep study when I bought three different anti-snoring solutions in a last ditch effort to avoid a path to a CPAP machine: nose spreaders, chip strap, and this pillow.
* The nose spreaders helped me inhale more clearly, but the increased airflow was noisy for me and my wife, and did nothing to prevent the closing of the soft palate. * The chinstrap simply forced my mouth closed, which treated the symptom of puffing but took away the last path for air to escape, leading to a fully constricted apnea episode within seconds of falling asleep. * Finally, I tried this pillow...
I found that when I have pressure on the back of my neck, my jaw moves forward and allows the soft palate to close off my nasal cavity. This pillow supports the back of my head while not putting disproportionate pressure on the back of my neck. After three months of using this pillow, I have had some of the best sleep in a while. It leaves me with more energy to go to the gym, try to lose some weight, and avoid other complications. I've even been able to cut back on the caffeine I was using to compensate. It might take a little getting used to if you like a soft fluffy pillow, but when you experience several full nights of sleep in a row, you'll love it and acclimate to it quickly.
I recommend this for puffing, blowing raspberries, and other oral, nocturnal eruptions on exhale.
When I first got the pillow, I hated it. It was too light, too firm, and too different.
But after a couple of nights, of forcing myself to sleep on it, I really started to love it. The half-circle shape of the bottom of it is AWESOME! It cradles your head in such a way that it really helps support your neck, and was very comfortable to sleep on either my back or side.
At first, I hated how firm the pillow was, but once I got used to it, now I hate soft, squishy pillows, that don't give any support.
The only thing I didn't like about the pillow is the raised part at the top. I wish it were more like a wedge, to really tilt the head back, and keep the airways more open.
Honestly, I have no idea if it helped my snoring any. (I normally sleep alone, and only bought the pillow because a friend of mine was staying with me and complained of my snoring.)
I really did like this pillow, and miss using it. Unfortunately, after only about 3-4 months of use, it is squished down, flatter than a pancake. I don't know what happened! It's not like I was driving over it with a truck or anything.
So I probably won't buy this particular pillow again, since I can't afford to replace my pillow every 2 months, but I sure do miss it.
I have mixed feelings about this pillow. Mainly; the price. It just seems so freaking high for a piece of memory foam. But, then I have to look at the benefit; it definitely helped with my snoring. Apparently it was pretty bad. I had taken to sleeping in my son's room on a mattress on the floor so that my hard-working hubby could get some sleep. I was really tired every day and feeling generally poorly. I could tell that it was disrupting my sleep, because sometimes it would even wake ME up. It felt a little like I would stop breathing just for a second. I know some will say that's apnea but I think it is more like, pre-apnea. I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV.
My snoring is not generated in my nose but down in my soft palate. If my head and neck are in the wrong position, it's almost as if my glottal stop closes up and obstructs air from entering or escaping. Another reviewer described some "lip puffing", and that's exactly it. Imagine drawing up a big breath and then holding it as if you were underwater.....that's the body mechanism. I'm not sure if this sounds like gibberish, but if you have this kind of snoring it will seem familiar to you (hopefully).
This pillow is very firm. The first night it was a little uncomfortable. But when I asked hubby for a report the next morning, he said he hadn't heard anything from me. I then became hopeful that this pillow might work. The second night, it was more comfortable. I became more used to being "forced" to sleep on one side or the other, and I found that if I worked the ridge right up under my neck a certain way, it felt better.
The third night (last night) I slept great. Didn't even feel like I was using a new kind of pillow. Again, no report of snoring. At one point during the night I woke myself up with the glottal-stop-closed-up feeling, and I found that I had worked myself onto my back. I readjusted the pillow and myself, and fell right back to sleep. I feel great today. I feel better than I have in a long time; I popped right out of bed ready to take on the day.
I don't think any product is a miracle for snorers, as you can surmise by the plethora of snoring "cures" here on Amazon and elsewhere. And it really depends on what's making you snore; deviated septum, being overweight, whatever. This pillow seems to be working for me, and it's non-invasive, not chemical, and it doesn't make you look like Hannibal Lector in bed. My only reason for the dinged star is that, for $33.00, it's a little expensive. Now of course, that is countered by how long it keeps its shape and firmness. If it's $33.00 every 6 months, it's totally worth it. You can't really put a price on being able to sleep next to your beloved, but if I had to, it would be around $66 a year. *winks*
I need to return this - it simply doesn't work for my husband's snoring. While his snoring isn't particularly window-rattling, it is enough to keep me awake so the hope was this simple pillow "device" might help a snoring problem that isn't extreme enough for CPAP. However, in our case, it just doesn't work. His is more of a sinus/dry environment snore as opposed to a tongue-swallowing snore, so that might be why this isn't a good option for us.
