Zero to Five: 70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science (and What I ve Learned So Far) Spiral-bound – Download: Adobe Reader, June 17, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
Pregnancy? Newborn baby? Partway through parenthood with a toddler or preschooler? No matter your stage, you could use more calm, more confidence. You could read dozens of parenting books on pregnancy, baby sleep, picky eaters, child psychology, child development, potty training, and discipline. Or you could read Zero to Five: 70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science.
Journalist Tracy Cutchlow cuts to the chase, summarizing the best parenting research in bite-sized chunks. She knows from her own experience with motherhood: new parents are too busy and sleep-deprived. One tip per page + beautiful photographs = cool + easy.
Research
With the premise that science isn’t perfect, but it’s the best guide we’ve got, Zero to Five draws on scientific research and studies from experts such as Dimitri Christakis (screen time), Diana Baumrind (parenting styles), Adele Diamond (neuroscience and executive function), Carol Dweck (growth mindset), Alison Gopnik (child psychology), John Gottman (marriage and conflict resolution), Megan McClelland (executive function), Patricia Kuhl (language acquisition and brain development), Ellyn Satter (feeding children), Dan Siegel (emotions), Paul Torrance (creative thinking), Grover Whitehurst (literacy and reading comprehension), and more.
Then Cutchlow makes it all readable, for that 2-minute break you’ve got during the day.
This parenting book is for you
if you like to research all the options so you can find the best
if you are feeling scared, anxious, or unsure of yourself as a parent (who isn’t?)
if you like the idea of using science as a filter for the crazy amount of parenting advice out there
if you want practical, how-to ideas for applying the research -- not just what to do, but ideas for how to do it or how to say it
if you want to do things differently than your parents did, even though you love them
if you want word-for-word examples for dealing with specific discipline scenarios (hitting, biting, not sharing, talking back, refusing requests, not listening, and more)
if you are wondering how to handle television and screen time
if you are interested in positive discipline or positive parenting
...if you are a dad (or you are with a partner) who probably wouldn't read parenting books
if you are a grandparent wanting to be up with the latest knowledge about raising kids
...if you are studying for your CDA, or working in early childhood education, and want a reference
...if you work with families and want to recommend or provide evidence-based resources to them
if you want to feel like you’re enjoying parenting, not just surviving it
Who is using Zero to Five
besides, of course, parents, we've heard from:
Pediatricians. Many keep their copy in the exam room. Some private-practice pediatricians give a copy of Zero to Five to all new parents. Parent educators. "The best I've seen in a long time." "My go-to source." Parenting support groups. Seattle’s largest network, PEPS.org, uses Zero to Five as part of the weekly curriculum, in a "brain development break." Child-care providers. Agencies that train child-care providers. One agency created a training based on Zero to Five. Home visitors. Family therapists and psychologists. "Your book is a big part of my practice." "I recommend it all the time." Childbirth-class teachers. Early-learning advocates. Graduate students in child development.
Zero to Five is your quick and easy guide to the best practices in parenting.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2016This is such a wonderful parenting resource, and I appreciate that it begins with pregnancy, because parenting truly does begin before your baby is even born! As a mom of two young boys, I found it full of useful, valuable information, and also an enjoyment to read. Finding time to read can be tricky, but the format of this book is practical for those with just few minutes to spare here and there. I also think it's the perfect "coffee table" book for parents. Our friends will browse through it when visiting, and they'll learn great parenting tips in just a few minutes of flipping through and reading random pages.
Even though I'm no longer a new mom, I still find myself turning to Zero to Five as a resource. No two siblings are the same, and while my four-year-old son doesn't have a violent bone in his body, his almost two-year-old brother is the king of hitting, throwing, pushing, and more. It's been helpful to revisit the discipline section and implement the information and tips shared!
I gave a copy to my sister-in-law when she had her first baby, and she and her husband love that it contains both science based facts, but is also full of personal parenting stories. I agree- I find myself relating to the parenting stories shared throughout the book. As someone who loves pregnancy and parenting books, articles, and blogs, when I finished this book I found myself wanting more. I now follow Zero to Five on Facebook, and I enjoy reading the articles and information posted.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2016This book is not only set in firm, researched science and written in a way that makes it all clear and possible, it's truly comforting! Tracy Cutchlow's writing style makes you feel like you're having a cup of coffee with the best friend you can imagine: someone who gets you, believes in you, and has a great sense of humor. She's encouraging and understanding. You can tell that Cutchlow has been there. And she doesn't act as if the information in this book will make everything perfect in your life. She regularly audits how much of a struggle this parenting thing is. But she also gives you so much hope and such practical tips, all in a format that's super easy to access and read. My only wish is for a super-easy-to access index so when my toddler won't, say, stop biting me, I can easily find a section about that.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2016I've read many parenting books and this one is one of the ones I will happily lend out to new parents for it's invaluable tips! I love how easy it is to flip through and read. I knew Tracy edited Brain Rules for Baby (another favorite) so I was worried there would be too much overlap...there was overlap, but the tips go far beyond those in BRfB and also includes a lot of practical applications! To the reviewers who said this is only good for new parents...mother of 2 here who has read a lot of child development material and I think anyone could learn from this book. It would make an excellent gift for a first-time parent, though!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017We've really enjoyed reading portions of this book. We read Brain Rules for Babies by John Medina (loved it!), and saw the ad for this book at the back of the book. Since Medina's book didn't give a lot of specific, practical ways to go about applying the principles he talked about, we were excited to see what Zero to Five had to offer. The book has some great visuals, including pictures of babies, infants, and kids, and the book is neatly divided into main categories. There is also a small numbering system on the up right section of the pages that tells you the appropriate age to use the tips being talked about on the page. For example, one page might list 0,1, 2, meaning the tip works from infancy up to 2 years old. We've been reading portions of the book, but we've in no way read the whole thing (see below). Another plus about the book is that it is really easy to keep open, read, and turn the pages if it's sitting on a table while you're holding the little one.
The reason we're giving the book 4-stars instead of 5-stars is because we've found it hard to get through and to immediately use. It's not necessarily designed as a book to read cover-to-cover, which is fine. However, it took awhile to figure out which passages were appropriate for our infant. About the 5th time I picked the book up, I started noticing the little numbers I described above, and then it all made sense. It turns out there's a small picture on page 1 that explains the numbering system, but we missed it. We read the opening passages, but the little numbers and the small writing with the arrow pointing to the numbers didn't jump out at us until we combed through the book trying to figure out where we might've missed the explanation. All in all, the tips for "0" so far have been great, but finding them was a treasure hunt that became more frustrating than anything else as we were trying to find the pages with a "0" between quiet spells. Now that DD is sleeping more, we have a little more time to comb through the book, but for some reason it feels like an undertaking to do so and so it mostly sits on our coffee table until we get inspired to find out more.
All in all, we're really grateful this book exists and that we have it, and we expect it to be useful for years to come as DD grows. We''re also appreciative that Tracy Cutchlow was able to work with John Medina, get inspired, and share the insights she gained. If you're thinking about getting this book, buy it! If you're thinking a friend or relative who just had a kid might benefit from this book, know that they will. Even if you only gain benefit from one of the 70 tips, your child will be better off for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2015I tried to be a mindful parent, and, determined to do the best I could, read dozens of parenting books. A few of them were actually helpful. Now I am a grandparent, happy to be trusted and able to be with my grandson every day while his parents work. I am again reading a new generation of parenting books, very pleased to find so much now based on actual research.
Zero to Five is my new all-time favorite. Based on science, adjusted for the real world, written in the voice of your best, most supportive friend in an accessible, well-organized format, this is the book I will be giving to new parents and keeping within reach at all times as I help raise my grandson to be the best human being he can be. Tracy Cutchlow has produced a beautiful, unintimidating book packed with practical information to coach and inspire.

A very delightful experience reading it... innovative ideas, big pictures, scientifically based facts and ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT your run of the mill parenting book, utterly brilliant!
This book should be essential reading for all parents! Pages 58-61 on developing a growth mindset are worth the purchase price alone; as with all of the subjects presented in this book, it's about simple, gentle practices (praising effort rather than ability for example) that can make HUGE differences.
The format is wonderful, easy to dip in and out of if there are specific subjects you want to explore or you can pick up the colour coded, age specific themes for your child and run through those.
The spiral bound layout is perfect for casually leaving open at husband/mother/friend gazing level to subtly share with them the reasons why TV should be avoided before age two for example (I definitely recommend the hardcover over the Kindle format in this case for exactly this reason).
It's written beautifully, tackling often emotive subjects with kindness, sensitivity and wit and while the tag line is "70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science (and what I've learned so far) it is neither jargon loaded nor condescending.
After reading it, I felt motivated to share what I'd found out with my daughter, husband and others, unlike some other parenting books which left me overloaded, confused and inadequate.
Finally, having a scientific basis to support each subject, rather than just someone's opinion, was perfect for me (I'm a theorist/reflector who craves logic and structure!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great
Awesome resource. Having four little ones (at time of writing I have 4 babies under 2 - twins and then 18 months later twins again), I have made a bit of a hobby of browsing the latest research in to good parenting practice (I know - no life!) - and this book summed up most of the good stuff I had gathered from other books.
Absolutely a great guide for an all round over view great parenting for anyone pressed for time which, let's face it, is most of us poor parents!
