So far so good. Recommended.
Update: 02/27/16 I'm moving this up to five stars. Just because it's never failed me so far. My auto-unlock still works at all times, except for when we come in by car (poor cellphone reception in our garage so it's often too slow to open the lock before I arrive). Everlock still works as well and my Airbnb guests have been all very pleased with the ease of use of the lock. All in all this has been a positive surprise and given that I got the refurb for just about $100 it's been decent enough value for what it does (saving me time and hassle). Looking back now, I'm glad I didn't go through the hassle of installing an entirely new lock like the Schlage Sense for $200, which I had been considering. I thought I'd miss the number pad, but I really haven't so far. Oh one last thing. Some people complain about the lid falling off. I've noticed maybe twice in four weeks the lid coming a little off, but it's generally not been a problem for me. I think the battery straps may be to blame for this one. Might cut them off to makes this easier. Update: 02/15/16 So I've been having this now almost a week. So far no problems. Auto-unlocking and Everlock work as they should. My August has been smart enough to figure out whether I'm home or just coming home. So very happy with that. Later this week I'll have our first Airbnb guests coming, so will see how they fare. 02/11/16 Got this last night to make hosting on Airbnb easier. Took me about 40 min to install and I first thought I wouldn't be able to use my keys anymore -- turns out you need a lot of force to turn the deadbolt now. Installation was not too hard. I had been worried since I'm not the most handy guy but it was well enough explained and much better than other manuals of other locks for instance. I really liked that I didn't have to switch locks since I'm renting the apartment it saves me trouble to give the landlord a new set of keys etc. Though August looks a little bulky and maybe intimidating it still has great build quality and has a nice industrial design (you can see that fuse project had its hands in here). Installing the two firmware updates was super slow and took twenty minutes because it's all OTA with the lock's BLE connection. So far my August works as it should. The app could need some updating though. You can tell that it's still only iPhone 5 optimized and scaled up which cheapens the looks. Also I wish the app had a function to deactivate the sound feedback which can be a little noisy at night. The August connect that I'd bought with it is super slow unfortunately making remote control everything but easy. Integration is there with a few apps and devices but I'd like to see more such as IFTTT and Amazon Echo integration. Anyways I came in with low expectations based on the other reviews but so far it's holding up well enough. Will I leave my keys at home though? Not yet!

The August Smart Lock is a phenomenal piece of tech!

I have installed and setup the August Smart Lock and done some of my own testing and thought I'd leave feedback.

First, I have two deadbolts on all my doors. The top deadbolt does not have a corresponding key on the outside of the door. I initially tried to setup August on this lock but was unsuccessful. They type of deadbolt I have has a removable brass actuator which slides out when I remove the lock handle. Because this removes, I could not install the August. The August requires the actuator to be a part of the outside lock components and requires it to not be removable. I relocated the August to the bottom lock which has the corresponding outside key and the installation took about 5 minutes in total. Following the instructions included I was able to complete the installation without issue.

My next step was to setup the application. I downloaded the August application from the iTunes store and began setup. It first asked me for my first name and last name. It then asked me for my cell phone number. After choosing next, I was texted an activation key which I entered into the application which progressed me to the next step which was to enter my email address. I entered my email address and choose next. I was then emailed an activation code which I entered in the application. From there I was able to interact with the lock. The next time I launched the application, it notified me of two updates ready for the lock. I left the phone near the lock and let it finish the update process which took about 15 minutes. I have a gigabit Internet connection at home so I assume the update timeline was the lock updating and not the updates downloading. After the update was successful, the app allowed me to interact with the lock without issue.

I then moved to installing the August Connect which I reviewed below.

After testing the installation, I invited the three other household members via their cell phone numbers. They immediately received a text message with the link to install the application. After installation of the application, each were able to easily setup activation via their SMS client and their email. They then tested the lock and all worked well. Initially, I set them up in the app as "guests" and there were no issues. When I changed the permissions for everyone to "owners", I noticed I was locked out of the lock when another owner was accessing the interface. I imagine this is required to ensure there's no confusion or simultaneous commands with conflict with one another. I changed everyone back to guests but me and operation was much smoother for everyone.

I also tested the lock from outside the house via the Internet and it locked and unlocked within a few seconds. I also enabled the feature which automatically enables the lock after 2 minutes after unlocking it via the app. Overall, this is a well thought out design and works exceptionally well.

The August smart lock is a great concept but there is a lot to be desired for future models and software updates.

    PROS
Love how it opens automatically when I approach the door.
Auto lock feature helps me lock door in case I forget.
Installation was easy and great for apartment setting where locks cannot be changed.

    CONS
Guests initially signing up for digital keys is a pain.
Auto lock feature could be dangerous if you step out for a moment without keys or your phone.
App is so simplistic that there is a lot to be desired.

    FEATURES I WISH IT HAD
Easier process to issue one time guests or friends a key without registering for an account.
Accelerometer to register when the door has opened, closed or when someone knocks on the door.
Ability to send messages when a door has been locked via app or key.

I have had the August smart lock for a little over a month now and have had a chance to put it through the paces of everyday use. Taking the August lock out of the box, it is easy to setup and the instructions are fairly easy to follow. After about 10 minutes the lock is ready to go by snapping the unit on the wall bracket. It takes a little getting used to when the lock is first mounted as it is fairly large and definitely catches the eye of guests who come over. If you are looking for something discrete to place in the home then this may not be for you. Every guest that comes over always takes notice to the August lock on the wall. Fortunately the comments are positive as the August lock does have a good design and aesthetic appeal.

Installing the application is very easy and setting up an account is easy but takes a few steps to get everything up and running. This is perfectly fine for me, a tech enthusiast who will take the time to set up the lock and get everything programmed. However, when it comes to issuing keys to guests who do not share the same level of enthusiasm, then it is a process to get them to register for a digital key to enter the home. I believe the deterrence is due in part to the lengthy process that guests have to go through to register for an account. Guests have to go through the same multi-step process as the lock owner has to go through to set up an account. I get the security reasons for this as a photo and number are helpful for less known guests that you may not trust. However, if it is a close friend, it would be nice to simplify the process where they could enter and exit the home with ease and be encouraged to use the lock to its full potential.

While reviewing this lock I had only the lock itself and did not have the wifi accessory that plugs into the wall. The auto unlock feature is my favorite feature on the lock but to fit the theme of this review, there is more to be desired. When set up, the lock will automatically unlock when you enter the defined GPS radius and approach the door. This is great but about 10% of the time the door will have a 30 second delay from when I get to the door to unlock. Although uncommon, it is annoying when it happens. This is great but I wish the radius on the GPS locator was a little smaller. For example, I live in a small apartment community and when I go to take my dog for a walk around the block, I often do not leave the GPS radius and the door will not auto unlock for me when I return. This is a minor issue but it would be a nice fix if possible. The auto lock feature is nice and has options between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. The everlock feature is nice but I don't quite trust it on behalf of my own ignorance. Often I take the dog out in the middle of the night and am not conscience enough to take my phone. Luckily I have not been locked out yet because I have the timer set to 5 minutes. However, if you are getting this and live in an area where you may step out for a moment without your phone to talk with a neighbor or check the mail, be careful not to lock yourself out.

Notifications from on the phone are a nice feature when you are not at home and someone opens the front door via the app. I say via the app as any manual key opening or closing will not appear on the app notification. Kind of a bummer. It also would be nice to get a text notification on my phone if someone is knocking at the door but that is a minor issue that is nice to have but not necessary. Also, I have noticed that if multiple people come home at the same time, the door will open and alert for each member that enters the home. That is good and all until you have three people coming in the house all with the app and have to wait for all three notifications and for the door to unlock itself 3 times. When this happens, I will wait for the door to audible chime for the amount of people entering the home before I go to lock it. Otherwise, I will be re-locking the door a couple of times as the door has a 30 second delay when processing multiple members returning home at the same time.

If you are looking for a door lock that has some great initial smart home features then I do recommend this lock despite some of its short comings. I have enjoyed this lock and I hope this critical review is used by August to improve an already great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Lock
Reviewed in Canada on February 20, 2016
Absolutely love this lock. Not the one I received from Amazon. It arrived in a beat-up resealed package so figuring it was probably used I went and bought one at BestBuy. The lock installed easily and has been working flawlessly ever since.
The Auto-Unlock feature is absolutely awesome and works exactly as expected. It is great to just walk up to the door and walk in. Especially when my hands are full. Just don't expect it to work other than as designed as some reviewers have.
The Ever-Lock feature is great too, albeit not for everyone. If you like to regularly leave your home/office/room without locking it behind you, just leave this feature turned off. For me, I find it great to be able to walk out of the house without having to manually lock the door behind me and with the peace of mind knowing that the door is never left unlocked.
Between those 2 features, I rarely have had to pull out a key.
It is also very convenient to 'invite' people with the app to provide access when you are not home.
All in all, very happy with this product. (Just no so much with the amazon vendor I first purchased from.)

Remember that this is a supplementary device on your existing security. For the pundits that say "what if your phone goes dead", "what if the batteries die while you're away", "what if it locks itself when you don't want it to", etc... well... that's what the key is for! Duh!

Cool product but if you want to connect it with Wink or to use it with wi-fi you must buy a August connect. The Loxk plus the connect is costly. Slow to lock and unlock through the app, and the auto unlock while you are close is awful, that never work.
