Wemo Switch
The Wemo Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug uses your existing home Wi-Fi network to provide wireless control of your lights and appliances. Using the free Wemo app, you can turn on a space heater in your garage or a fan in your kitchen, even if you're miles from home.
No subscription or hub is required: simply plug Wemo Switch into an electrical outlet, connect a device to the Smart Plug, and wirelessly control your device using a tablet or phone. This makes it easy to put a living room lamp on a schedule or – for peace of mind – randomize your home lights when you're on vacation so it looks like you're home.
What's in the Box:
- Wemo Switch Smart Plug
- Quick Start Guide
Set Schedules and Timers
Using the free Wemo app, you can schedule a lamp to turn on at sunset, or keep your house comfortable in the summer by scheduling a fan to turn on at noon.
Turn Off Appliances Remotely
If you have a habit of accidentally leaving an appliance – such as a curling iron – on, Wemo Switch Smart Plug offers peace of mind by allowing you to turn it off, even if you're already halfway to the office.
Protect Your Home with Away Mode
Using Wemo ‘Away Mode', you can create the illusion that you’re at home even when you’re away. 'Away Mode' turns plugged-in lights on and off in a random pattern.
Hands-Free Control with Alexa
When paired with Amazon Alexa, the Wemo Switch Smart Plug gives you hands-free voice control over your devices. Turn your lights, appliances, or an entire room on or off using just your voice.
Compatible with Nest
The Wemo Switch Smart Plug pairs with Nest’s Thermostat to offer a range of automatic control options. The Thermostat detects when you’re home or away and syncs with Wemo Switch. Use Nest compatibility to turn a fan off when the house is empty, or have your lights switch on when you come back home.
Add More Features with IFTTT
'If This, Then That' is a free web-based service that lets you do amazing things with your Wemo. Turn lamps, coffee makers, fans and other electronics on when you’re almost home or off when you leave. With IFTTT, Wemo can even schedule the lights to turn on automatically when you open the garage. Visit the site to find 'recipes' for your Wemo Switch.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2015Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseUpdate: 4-5-2-15. Still disappointed that EVERY WeMo product is still mashed into this one huge review section. This update refers to the Belkin WeMo Switch only. A recent firmware update has increased the responsiveness of my 4 WeMo Switches so that all respond promptly to on/off commands. Also, the more aggressive integration of the WeMo Switch with the IFTTT app expands the functionality of the WeMo switch significantly. The app runs smoothly. I see no flaws in this product that would warrant it receiving anything but 5 stars. Again, can not speak for the other WeMo products as do not own any.
I just posted the following review on Apple's App Store of the WeMo app and how it interacts with the Belkin WeMo Switch. I'm sure everyone has noticed that Amazon clumps the reviews of ALL the WeMo Products into one giant review section. I am not sure this is best as it is possible that various WeMo products are performing at different levels. For example, I noticed that the WeMo light switch has a fair amount of negative reviews. Maybe that is because it is the most often bought item in the WeMo line. Maybe it is a less admirable product. In my case, I was interested in the WeMo WALL SWITCH. I found it fatiguing to weed through all the reviews finding the ones on that specific product. Anyway...here is my review of the WeMo App in conjunction with the WeMo WALL SWITCH.
First, my hardware and software for reference:
iPhone 6+ running iOS 8.1.3 (12B466)
WeMo Product: 4 WeMo Switches (Kind that plugs into wall outlet)
Version of WeMo Switch: VA01
Firmware running on WeMo Switches: WeMo_US_2.00.7166.PVT
App Version: 1.10.2 (20022)
Here’s the good news:
1. All 4 of my WeMo Switches nicely control the devices to which I have them connected. 3 lights and one TV.
2. I can successfully control all 4 WeMo Switches via my Home Network, via the Enterprise Network at work, and via 3G and 4G.
For those reasons the product and app earn 5 Stars.
I had to take away 1 star because of the bad news:
1. The app is not refined and often requires several attempts at various tasks in the setup before success is achieved. Luckily I am not a novice user of iOS technology and am comfortable with trial and error. When I set up several of my devices I was told the device was trying to connect to my network. Then it told me it failed and to try again or later. I kept trying and it kept saying it failed. So I stopped trying…only to realize that the Switch WAS connected to my network! The developers need to fix this inaccurate reporting as many folks would give up right there trying to set up the device.
2. I understand the need for firmware updates and am actually glad the company is showing attention to areas of improvement by the presence of firmware updates. My switches needed 2 firmware updates each. Again, that’s fine. My only complaint is after the first firmware update on each of my 4 Switches I received a celebration banner saying something to the effect that 'Your WeMo switch is now running the latest, greatest FW version. Hooray!’ Actually, that was not true at all. There was still one more firmware update and only because I noticed a red dot on the menu bar at the bottom of the app screen did I decide to check if there were more firmware updates. This needs fixing. Each Firmware update takes a while…5 minutes or so. That’s ok.
4. When I experimented and turned on some of my devices from work (Enterprise network) and some of my devices via 4G (parking lot at work) everything went fine. When I got home all the device were on. Great! However, I was unable to turn 3 of the 4 devices off (Home Network). Because of past experience with other buggy apps, I totally closed the WeMo app and reopened it (I didn’t just put it in the background in the recently used app bar). That fixed the problem and I was able to turn off all the devices. Obviously the user shouldn’t need to do this (reboot the app) and some users may not think to do it. This is another area for the developers to refine the app.
All in all, I really like this product. I have no qualms recommending it. But novice users would be encouraged to solicit the assistance of an experienced person during setup and remember...my review is with regard to the functionality of the WeMo Wall Switch. Perhaps it applies to the other products. Perhaps not.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseLet’s be clear: the product is not bad, the software is. As a matter of fact, the software is terrible. You can trust me on this one, because I have 14 different devices installed at home. They are all working, sort of…, but it is not that easy. Setting up is OK, and it’s not the main problem. In the last few years, I had all sort of difficulties, but the last one, is far from preventing me from posting this negative review. I had everything working fine after many, many problems. It took me a few months and contacts with Belkin to get them to work, and then… a firmware update came to mess everything. You cannot avoid the firmware download, so the applications just tell you, that is installing the new firmware and you have to wait. After that happened, all my devices keep showing “downloading” in the app, and you cannot control them. In an effort to get them working, I tried a different phone, because mine is an Android, I thought that maybe my wife IPhone would work. So I downloaded from the Apple store and installed, but the same thing happened. On my phone, I tried do uninstall and reinstall it many times, but the problems persist. Tried on an Ipad, on a Samsung Galaxy Tab2, and 2 different Android phones, but with no success. I even tried to turn off all my house electricity, turn back on, to see if would stop the problem, but it did not. So what point am I? If I open the WeMo app in any of my phones or tablets, all them keep showing the “downloading” message, and don’t let me do anything with them. What was programed, is working, but I cannot access any switch to change anything. There is an “alternative” app, that is far from perfect (much slower), but at least let me control the Switches and Insights, it’s called Memo Widgets. I also have 2 motion sensors, and they trigger the corresponding lights, but I cannot change any setting any more. Hope that this has helped you. Just so you don’t think I am a total idiot, I am an engineer with 35 years of experience in digital technology and I have 117 IPs taken in my home network, aside from the WeMo devices, everything works flawlessly. Best regards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente producto

5.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating at first, but then...
Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseSome things to know about this switch. It only supports 2.4GHz Wifi. If you have 5GHz only, move along. This will not work. It only support Wifi password with alpha-numerical characters. My password had a dot in it and it wouldn't connect to it so keep that in mind. You will probably have problems getting it connected the first time and you will probably get really frustrated. However, once it connects and gets a firmware update, it gets better. It might take a while before you're offered to do a firmware update so one way to force it is to disable "Remote Access" in the Wemo app. Once you do, you'll be offered with the update. Re-enable remote access once the update is done.
I have 3 of those around the house and they work as expected once updated. You can program schedules within the Wemo app or IFTTT. With all of them updated, they always work and the app always sees them. My router has dual-band so the 2.4GHz limitation wasn't an issue.
When installing for the first time, the Wemo switch will have its own Wifi that you have to connect your phone to in order to configure it. I also had to temporarily turn off cellular data so that my phone stuck to the Wifi. You see, my phone automatically switches to LTE data if the connected Wifi has no internet access so that made the Wemo app not see the switch. This may happen to you as well. Turning off data solved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works, but integration features are still very primitive
Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseHardware is fantastic - easy to set up, and works like a champ.
As other people have reported, the software is junk. It's too slow to do anything in (even navigating between screens), takes too long to refresh, looks terrible and just generally feels sloppy. However, if you're willing to tolerate it, it will get the job done.
The device can be controlled via IFTTT (If This Then Than) although it's only very basic. You can turn it off and on - that's it. Unfortunately you can't get at the timer function built into the device.
Discovery via Amazon Echo is also simple ("Alexa, discover my appliances"). It uses the name you assigned your switch in the WeMo app (so you can call the switch "Coffeemaker" and tell Alexa to "Turn on Coffeemaker"). Again, very primitive. You can't say things like, "Alexa, turn on my coffee maker in half an hour" or "at 7am".
The device remembers all its settings if it looses power.
I got this device with the hopes that I could turn my UV sterilizer (used to cure 3D prints) on and set auto-off timers hands-free via my Echo (e.g. "Alexa, Turn my UV sterilizer on for 3 hours"). It didn't quite live up to my expectations in this regard, although I was able to set a delayed timer in the WeMo app (to always turn off the appliance x minutes after turning on) and then tell Alexa to turn it on. So as long as I'm happy with pre-set 3 hour cycle, it works.

3.0 out of 5 stars They work and are worth the sale price, but there are far better options to consider.
Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseThese switches are ok. I bought them as an add-on to an existing z-wave network, because when on sale, they were a good price.
The good:
- These switches work. At a bare minimum, that's what's required to be ok.
- The app works. It's clunky, but it does have the option for scheduling, so again at a minimum, it meets the requirements.
- They're grounded and can handle appliances up to almost 1800watts. That's most of your standard 110v plug-in items.
The bad.
- Setup requires the installation of an app on your android or ios device. You CANNOT set these up without a mobile device of some sort and the Wemo app. To setup, you will need to use your mobile device to connect to the switches own wifi, which you can then use to update the switch to your home wifi connection.
- The app requires an unusually high amount of permissions on your device. Here's what's required. Identity (ok), Contacts (why?), Location (only if it has geofencing, which it doesn't), Photos/Media/Files (why??), Camera (WHAT???), WiFi (obviously), Device ID & Call Information (pretty much a default for all apps).
- The switches are BIG. They look so much smaller in the picture, but are large. With the ground plug, they cannot be turned, so you can only use one in a standard socket. If you plug it into the top socket, you will be able to use a standard lamp plug in the bottom socket, but if you're using a phone charger or other slightly bulkier outlet, it's probably not going to fit, and they won't fit side by side.
- They make a slight buzz
- Compared to z-wave devices which is where I come from, these use a lot of energy. WeMo likes to say it uses 6x less than a clock radio, but that's simply not true. These use about 1.5 watts on their own when doing nothing and an modern alarm clock that isn't playing music would use about the same, so that's just a misrepresentation. 1.5 watts in the grand scheme of things isn't much, probably about 75 cents/month per unit (with ontario's insane hydro rates), but plug-in z-wave devices use about 0.25 watts, which is closer to 0.15 cents/month. The difference starts to really add up when you have multiple devices.
- I mentioned I bought these to add on to a z-wave network, but that process did not go smoothly at all. With some manual adjustments to files, I was able to get them to work with my Vera UI7 Z-Wave system. It wasn't overly complicated, and there are instructions online, but it was far from seamless.
Overall, I think they're ok. Now that I have them setup with my Vera system I have uninstalled the garbage app that they forced me to install, and intend on never using again. They are worth the $35 I paid, but there are far better options out there at the $50 price point if that's what you're considering.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, awful product.
Style: Switch Smart PlugVerified PurchaseGreat idea, awful product. Purchased 4 of these, and they worked just fine at first. Even setup timer for them to turn on by the time I arrive home from work, and then turn off when it's time to hit the bed. However, after just a couple of days, I get hit with the "Not detected" sign on the app. This seems to be an known issue, and replacing your Wemo just won't fix it (I tried that). Do a search and visit forum, even Belkin tech support has no clue how to fix that issue. You will get the "reset" app/wemo, but you'll end up with the same problem again. Do yourself a favor, just skip this one. There are alternatives out there. Hope this helps. I'll give away mine once I am tired of having to unplugged/reset.
