What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.

What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?

Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.

Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.

Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.

How do I set up my unlocked phone?

The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

    and the like. I really
    4 out of 5 stars
    and the like. I really
I bought this to replace my Alcatel One Touch Fierce that I got for a paltry $40 on clearance at Target one day. My phone before the One Touch was a HTC Droid Incredible II which I absolutely adored (the camera on it was stellar). I hadn't had a reasonably new phone (one that was released within a couple months of me purchasing it) in a long, long time. So I'd been used to outdated and often no-longer-updated apps, operating systems, and the like.I really, really love my Life One X.It's snappy and responsive and easy to use. The size was a little cumbersome for me, initially, as both my Incredible II and One Touch Fierce were smaller models and I could easily reach the whole screen with one hand. That's not always possible with the Life One X, but it's a small price to pay.I do use a lot of apps - including customization apps to make my screen look better (things like Go Launcher, Go Locker, and Zooper widgets), so those kinds of things do eat some some memory, but even so, my apps run quickly and only things like heavier games tend to give me a little lag.My only major complaint is one that's echoed in other reviews:The battery life isn't stellar and it takes a long time to recharge.I use my phone from when I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep at night. I use it to socialize with friends or to play games on. I use it at work, to snap pictures of things, or to utilize things like Google Drive and Trello for tasks and projects. I use it for bus schedules, for grocery lists, for shopping apps, the whole gamut. When I take my phone off the charger in the morning, I can expect it to drop 1-2% almost immediately. In the time reading things on my way to work I can expect probably another 8-10% drop. If I'm using it a lot at work, I'll usually be down to about 30-40% by the time I leave. That remaining battery life goes fast and if I have to run errands after work and I don't have a portable charger, it'll be bottoming out on the bus ride home for the night.I've learned to keep a portable USB charger fully charged and handy, as well as an extra USB cable and adapter in my bag just to be safe. Some people may not used their phone as heavily as I do and they'll probably be more content with the battery life. I may also have higher expectations for how long my battery should last, as well. But be aware that this phone does take a long time to charge and battery life could be better. My other complaints are minor -First, I think the camera could be better, but it's still a GREAT camera in comparison to the One Touch Fierce. Bright scenes are often blown out, light-wise, and need to be tweaked with the Professional camera setting (lowering the exposure usually does the trick). But this IS a budget phone and I don't expect iPhone levels of camera quality. I just wish I could find a newer phone with as nice of a camera as my Incredible II had.Secondly, no matter how many times you select the SD card as the default write disk (where apps and such are downloaded and installed to), it will not do it. Maybe it puts my downloads and photos there? But I am constantly having to go into my settings and into the app settings and moving apps individually to my SD card. It's not the worst thing, but it's mildly annoying because it ALSO has to be done whenever an app updates. For people like myself, who have a more intermediate knowledge of cellphones and write disks and stuff, it's not so bad. But I could see how someone could get confused and frustrated with their phone storage filling up quickly and not understanding why that's happening when they also have a 32gb SD card, as well. If there's a way around this issue, I'm happy to hear it. Maybe I've overlooked a setting or somesuch. For $150 this phone is a dream. I just bought a second one for my husband, as well.

It's been a couple of months now, and I'm really impressed with this phone!
It's quick with both data transfer and app loading, it has plenty of storage space (for my needs, at least), and even with wi-fi/gps/background apps always active, the charge lasts 2-3 days depending on how much I use it. I've seen other comments complaining about the recharge time, but I disagree with those. I can leave it plugged into the wall charger and gain 30-50% in 60-90 minutes, and fully recharge from under 20% in about 4 hours. The front and rear cameras both come with LED flashes and take crisp, clean images; but I have not yet tested them in low-light/no flash conditions - such as attempting to photograph the moon, stars, UFOs, Santa, etc.

There are 3½ points that I would describe as peeves rather than actual drawbacks.

1.) Because the screen is raised above the frame and rounds off at the edges, a screen protector cannot properly cover it fully from edge to edge. As a result, getting my protector to line up where it wasn't covering the front camera or the flash, or sticking off over the tapered edge took several tries and resulted in more than a few bits of dust underneath it. But now that you know this in advance, you should be able to plan for it accordingly and get better/faster results.

2.) Entering my PIN to unlock the screen can get laggy. I don't know why, but you need to press each number and hesitate up to half a second before tapping the next one in order to make sure it registered, or you may find yourself reattempting the PIN several times.

3.) You have to go through an entire process that shouldn't be necessary to use a non-default ringtone that involves creating a new audio profile. If you don't, it will use the ringtone set by default when you first bought it, even though it displays that a custom tone has been selected.

3.5) The phone comes with 4 audio profiles by default: General, Silent, Meeting & Outdoor. Whether or not you've unlocked your screen, you can swipe down from the top (1x if the screen is locked, 2x if unlocked) to find an Audio Profiles menu option where you can easily switch between them - which should come in very handy for situations like suddenly remembering to mute your phone before the movie starts. However, only those 4 profiles are offered as options. So, if you created that 5th profile so that you can use Fall Out Boy's Immortals as your ringtone but had to switch to Meeting mode (vibration only), you then have to go all the way back into the settings menus to return it to your custom profile. The other three profiles are for default, came-with-the-phone ringtones only.

      Some useful usage tips -
I upgraded from a Huawei Valiant. So, some of these functions, features and methods were new to me. Items B & C even required a web search to find the answers. Hopefully, I can save someone else the bother with these:

A.) Holding your finger over any empty portion of screen will open a new menu - this is how you get to your phone's settings.

B.) Creating a new audio profile so that you can have a custom ringtone:
      - Hold finger over empty screen space for half a second, then choose SETTINGS from the menu
      - Scroll down and select SOUNDS & NOTIFICATIONS
      - Tap the Three Vertical Dots at the top-right corner of the screen and choose ADD AUDIO PROFILE
      - Give it a Name. I named mine Zedge because I used the apps to find & download my ringtone and notification clip. Tap OK.
      - Tap the Gear Icon next to your new audio profile and adjust the settings and files to your desired preferences.
      - If you phone ever starts using the default ring/notification tones, go back to SOUNDS & NOTIFICATIONS to make sure that this new profile is selected.
      - To delete a custome profile, tap and hold it for 1 second, then choose delete.

      C.) Take a screenshot:
      - Hold the POWER & VOLUME DOWN buttons at the same time for 1 second.

D.) From the lock screen, you can SWIPE UP to unlock the screen, SWIPE LEFT to go straight to the call function (requires PIN), or SWIPE RIGHT to go straight to the camera (does not require PIN, and relocks the screen if you attempt to go to the Home Screen). You do not need to start with your finger over the related icons that appear in the bottom-left and -right corners.

E.) Does not have multiple home screens be default, and every panel MUST have at least one icon on it - which came as a great frustration to my wife who likes to have a clear view of her wallpaper by default and swipe to the panel with the icon she wants when she's ready to use it. If you want multiple icon panels, drag an icon to the right-hand edge of the screen and hover until a new panel slides into view. This can get tricky as the icon must pass about half-way out of view in order for the phone to understand that you're trying to move it to another panel.

I got this phone when it was $99 but I think I would have paid the $149 for it if I had missed the sale. You get an awesome screen that is quite bright. You get almost stock Android Lollipop. I only had to remove an antivirus app that came preinstalled. There was one other thing but I can't remember but I am grateful for being able to take off what I didn't want. The default mail app is Boxer which isn't bad. Touchpal 2015 is the default keyboard and ASOP keyboard comes with the phone. It is easy enough to go to the Play store and download the Google keyboard or any other you want. I have had sporadic lag with the keyboard regardless of which one I used. That was mostly as the phone was setting up and I was downloading my apps and right now I have not had a repeat of the issue. If you type a lot it would be quite annoying if it remains a constant problem. I will update if it continues. The speaker is in the back of the phone and is quite tinny sounding. Blu had to save money somewhere on this phone and I suppose this is where they chose to do so. The screen is top notch and build quality is excellent. People say I sound clear on calls and I can hear everyone just fine. This will depend on your phone carrier also. The phone takes two sims and you can set it up to use data for one sim and voice for another. You can also store apps on your micro SD card IF the app allows it. Some apps will not. If you don't want to spend a lot for a phone but want plenty of value for your money this phone is worth a try.

Update for 12/19/2015 There have been no more issues with any of the keyboards I use lagging now that all apps have been set up. I restarted the phone last evening after the last app I wanted to install was put on and have been using the phone quite a bit since then and I have not had a repeat of the problem so far. I do find the default keyboard not to be that great looking but I understand it is quite popular in some circles. This phone is slow to charge up to full. It took over two hours and twenty minutes from about 36% down yesterday but with intense use it has held up nicely so far today. The screen is quite bright so turning it down if not in direct sunlight will also help the battery life. Because the phone is new I am using it more than usual so it will a few more days before I know what battery life will be for me. I still think this is the phone to get whether Blu ever updates it to Marshmallow or not. This is a lot of phone for a small price. I did not turn on encryption because it can slow down some phones. I will let someone else try that out and see how it works for them.
