This is the 4th edition of Nosh for Students, a book originally inspired by the author's son, Ben, who left for university with no cooking skills. Toasted sandwiches and Mars bars were his staple diet, but these didn't serve him too well! What was needed to encourage him to cook was an easily attainable taste of home, oh, and pictures with every recipe! Nosh for Students was born. Since then, Joy has helped over 150,000 students get cooking with her straightforward and simple approach. Joy helps to take the chore out of cooking, giving students a taste of success and making the experience so much fun.

What Real Students Say...

As a self confessed cookery dummy I found this book to be extremely useful. Its fun, easy to use, interesting and even my MUM uses it

...a bargain price. This book was a present just before leaving for uni. I have now finished my 2nd year and its my bible! ...the recipes are all really easy and inexpensive. A beautifully illustrated book

...It's easy to follow & you don't need tons of equipment - not even scales! This book is absolutely amazing. I started university not being able to cook and now I cook shepherd's pie, curry and full roast dinners just a year afterwards. This book has revolutionized my eating habits! A menu for a week and planning what to buy will revolutionize spending habits too. If your child is starting uni please buy them this book because I really do not know how I would have got through uni without it. What Mums and Others Say

... Beware! May reduce phone calls home...from what I can gather, this book has been in daily use in my daughter's new household for the last 6 weeks

... she's almost stopped phoning up to say ;How do I cook this? I sent my lad off to university with a variety of student cookery books alongside a slow cooker. The slow cooker remains unused as are the other books - apart from this one. He shares a house with 5 lads, they all use this book. My son never used to do any cooking, but now he cooks for himself every day! My daughter starts University in October so I got one for her too. I will definitely buy a few more as gifts for friends' sons and daughters - excellent value! --Amazon Reviews

About the Author

Joy May I love food, always have. When I was about six, I started to learn how to cook. By the time I was 12, my sister and I could cook Sunday lunch. I love this heritage and I like nothing better than having a house full of people to feed. I wrote this book when Ben, my beloved eldest, left home for uni. I had no success in teaching him to cook. My final hope was that the harsh realities of a uni kitchen would be the kick-start that he needed. However, on sight of his pasty face as he returned from the first semester, I knew more proactive measures were in order. That's why I wrote this book.

Good recipes and lots of photos
Excellent cookbook with clear recipes and easy to source ingredients. Have already made some meals and everyone enjoyed them.On both my copies on page 140 the ingredients for moussaka are blacked out. Amazon promptly dispatched new copies but same issue. It is only that page and even my soon to be students with better eyesight than me can't read it!

A fantastic cookbook for a student looking to get into cooking.

The recipes themselves are in depth, each with their own finished picture for you to work towards. The ingredients list is common, and everything is done in easily measurable portions - no need to buy lots of scales, measuring jugs, etc.

The book also includes a weekly meal planner, with a shopping list for the week. I personally loved this as I didn't even have to think about budgeting for food. They decide your 7 meals, tell you how much it'll cost, and how much to buy for the week. Takes all the stress and effort out of food shopping, which is great for students such as myself.

The book itself is printed on high quality paper and feels like it'll last a very long time. It'll definitely survive being in the kitchen and having food spilt on it.

The deserts section is also a great thing to look through, recipes for some lovely sweets to make yourself as little rewards.

No complaints whatsoever, great for yourself or a gift to someone interested in getting into cooking

I bought this for my son who is living away from home for the first time. It has nice and simple instructions and is also very practical by giving a list of all the cooking utensils you would need for all the recipes in the book, and also an estimated cost of each recipe, which is kept up to date every time the book is reprinted. My son has tackled a few recipes and has sent me some lovely photos of the results. He said they were all delicious. It's given him a confidence in the kitchen which has encouraged him to adapt and experiment beyond the book. There is a varied range of recipes for hungry teenagers but I noticed quite a lot of sausage recipes when I flicked through it, but that could have just been the pages I came across. I'm sure they appear in equal measure with other meats. I loved the page showing just the size of an actual mug as a measuring guide! Clear and simple. He did follow the advice to plan meals and use ingredients for more than one recipe, but found that planning a weekly menu stressed him out!!

My copy of this book was a little dated in its costings, but is a good collection of clearly written step by step recipes, with very good full colour photographs of each dish.

These are so important for novice cooks. I learned to cook in the Seventies when very few cookbooks had more than a handful of illustrations, and inevitably, every dish looked absolutely perfect. It's no wonder that my cooking really became very adventurous when illustrated cookbooks became more the thing in the Nineties, and pictures became realistic.

The recipes are generally very affordable for hard pressed students; not in the Jack Monroe class, but nothing else is. There is a focus on lower cost meats such as mince, turkey and chicken, with good nutritional pointers, along with sensible advice on shopping lists/planned eating.

I no longer have students in the family, my motivation for getting this was to fill a gap whilst waiting for Jack Monroe's new book, and it does that nicely. The focus is on main meals, but there are some ideas for easy puddings too.

So as I'm coming to the end of my first year at university, I thought it might be reasonable to leave a review for a book which I have used on nearly a daily basis. As someone who had not cooked more than scrambled eggs on toast, I was quite worried about having to feed myself in ways other than pot noodles (though a cheaper brand, of course - you can get more that way). It is because of this book that I actually have a varied diet and have tried many different meals that I wouldn't have before. The instructions are easy to follow, put out in easy to understand terms, and accurate in their cook times etc. Everything is laid out well and the pictures give a good idea of what your meal ought to look like (roughly). It's adapted for student kitchens - we don't have scales! Mugs are the measurements and actually surprisingly accurate. After only a few months at uni I was actually confident enough to single-handedly cook Christmas dinner for the whole flat! If you are about to go into your first year at university, or even just living on your own/moving out, I would highly recommend this book!
My only qualm would be the lack of vegetable suggestions to accompany many meals. Most of the meals are detailed as their core basics, but after a while vegetables were actually missed (madness, I know). If there were suggestions as to which veggies might go well with what meals, then that'd be the perfect book right here for any student.

I bought this book for my daughter, to make sure she can feed herself at Uni. Written by a mum, primarily to help her own son when he went off to college, the book is attractively presented with lots of colour illustrations to show what the dishes look like. As well as the recipes (which are nutritious, delicious, economical and easy!), the book is full of handy tips and hints, and does not rely on a huge battery of seldom-used kitchen gadgets. In fact, you don't even need scales - everything is measured using only spoons or a mug! We have tried a lot of the recipes out already, and even my 14yo son enjoys using the book (and has already asked for his own copy!) I can honestly say that this is the most useful cookbook I have ever bought, and I'm going to have to buy myself another one when she leaves later this year.

I bought this book for my daughter just before she started university.

What can I say? I wish such an imaginative and easy to follow book had been around when I was starting out as a "green behind the ears" student in self-catering accommodation back in the 1980s. It would have saved me from so many pitfalls as the naive 18 year old I then was.

My daughter likes the book, and so do I. I admit that before she left I did use it myself occasionally to poach some ideas.

It is very easy to read. The recipes are imaginative, yet simple. Good, nutritious food and the cost of the ingredients will not break the bank. That is important for a student living on a loan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really convenient for 1-3 people
Reviewed in Spain on 9 July 2015
Nice pictures for every dish, easy well explained recipes, shows for how many people they are, with price per person, what is a plus for students. Most are for 2--3 people, so very easy to reduce for one. It also has some recipes for a group, as dips, cakes, o party treats, so it makes life much easier not only for students (living alone or together), but also for couples and social life.
I would have appreciated another type of bookbinding, as a spiral, as it is meant to be open while cooking, and with a regular bookbinding this is not always possible and binding could be easily damaged.
I recommend it for anyone living alone or with 1-3 partners.

Bought for my son for his first year at uni. The book is well laid out and the recipes and methods are practical. I doubt he will use more than a handful of the recipes but all in all a good book and would definitely recommend it.
