Gardénia by Chanel is a Floral fragrance for women. Gardénia was launched in 1925. The nose behind this fragrance is Ernest Beaux. Top notes are Orange Blossom and Green Notes; middle notes are Gardenia, Tuberose, Jasmine and Fruity Notes; base notes are Coconut, Musk, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Patchouli.

Gardenia is a gorgeous floral bouquet and an admirable example of talent from the great perfume creator, Ernest Beaux. He created this perfume in 1925. Gardenia was relaunched in the 1980's, together with other exclusive perfumes, such as Bois des Iles and Cuir de Russie. The reconstructed version is very similar to the original (vintage). In Ernest Beaux's time, synthetic materials technology was still undeveloped. Due to synthetic notes, the new version of Gardenia is more modern and not at all heavy or as strong as expected from white flowers. The elegance of Gardenia is timeless.
The natural fragrance of gardenia can not be distilled, and in this composition, it is substituted by fragrances of orange blossom and jasmine, and succored by a sweet tuberose note. In the base of the composition, besides musk, there are woody notes of patchouli, vetiver, and sandalwood. Gardenia comes in eau de parfum and eau de toilette concentrations.

This takes me back. The name speaks for itself. When you smell it, imagine your nose in a Gardenia flower. That's about it, and Chanel knows it. They rightfully named it as such, and are proud of it. My neighbor had a gardenia bush, and me and my mom would pick flowers off of it and bunch them up. This is that memory, that essence, in a fragrance. Can't help but love gardenia fragrances.
Truly a shame that it's SO expensive, because this is something I'd LOVE to own.
The sillage and longevity aren't the best of the best, but you really can't complain.

Got a sample to test out. Feels like a cleaner, more elegant and office safe version of Frederic Malle's Carnal Flower, which is why I prefer Gardenia over Carnal Flower for daytime wear. More jasmine than gardenia, but beautiful nonetheless. A classic. I'm happy to have the sample which is just about enough for me.

RottigrlNYC

I don’t know which edp I have because this one is very lite and barely a skin scent . Not for me . The 4ml tiny bottle is cute and enough for me . I’ll try to find the old edt version and compare.
Just like I didn’t believe that Coromandel edt would be more beautiful than the bottle of edp I own, it is. I absolutely love it and I was lucky to find a partial with 30ml still left, to buy for a great price . Finding an old Coromandel edt for a great price is almost impossible. I was very lucky.

Frangipanilove

A light, green gardenia. An expensive (and infinitely better - not screechy) version of ET Gardenia, which I can’t handle due to the off putting artificial lily of the valley type note. This one, its better - but I still prefer gardenias with slightly more sweetness as the natural flower has a more nectary quality.

*** gentle note ***
I know Chanel fragrance might be the messiest place to put your entry but this page, i believe is for original Gardenia until late Gardenia EDT in 2016, after 2016 Fragantica open another page for Gardenia 2016 for Gardenia EDP

You may relocate your review there so you can track more easy

Gardenia EDT
(35 ml. Limited Edition, 90’s, usd 65)

Friend of mine are kind to share late edp rendition for me (les exclusif) I got this as I haven’t had this in my collection.

I think I found my little treasure here.

The EDP, smell very flat. It is still beautiful but it more jasmine to my nose. The whole rendition burry heavily under Vanilla, it is smoother but.. it lacks.. lacks something, animalic / indolic I am not sure. It is non descriptive flower to my nose, cleans and soapy.

The EDT, other hands smell difference, I notice the almost sweet pollen like tone, Osmanthus(?) / Angelica(?). What actually it. Is very clean, off white. It’s not indolic to my nose but it smell like real flower to me.

Really don’t wanna say this.
But Gardenia (edp) means nothing compare to old edt rendition.

Only spring, only spring day time.

Update 1 on March 1st, 2024

Sorry blasting Gardenia but I think I kinda know now what is “Gardenia” interpretation in parfum.

It is creamy white floral feel.
Yeah, that’s all.

Paintedtrillium

I bought the Chanel discovery box and this was hands down mine and my husband’s favorite if the collection. I ordered the large bottle. Will be perfect for this summer. It has arrived and it is a summer dream of a scent. I can’t stop smelling my wrists. Such a gorgeous floral.

Diablomoni

I love this soo much. But I can’t justify the price because I would douse myself everyday in this if I owned it. It smells so perfect. The best dupe is body shop Moringa perfume. It smells exactly the same to my nose, more deep and 20 dollars

DrRosie

I had this beautiful fragrance two year ago and gave the full bottle away. One month later I find myself missing it an wanted to purchase it again. I did wait because I had so many other fragrances to purchase. For my birthday, I decided to buy it, oh man I missed this beautiful elegant gardenia fragrance. I have been a Chanel lover ever since I was in my 20's. I This gardenia fragrance is smooth an exceptional, classic, deeply elegant feminine scent, this is easy to wear, suiting both daytime and night time occasions and everyday. This could be a nice bridal choice for a spring/summer wedding or a lunch date. This fragrance is absolutely beautiful!

Chanel les exclusive Gardenia
Classic green white floral ,it doesn't give
love at first sniff, it doesn't mean it's not
beautiful. I just smell its scent profiles
many times before,carnal flower from
fredericmalle and fuego lento from frassai
have the same scent profiles, although it's
not dupes.Still Gardenia created almost 100 years ago, amazing.
My husband bought this for me,so l'm
glad to have Gardenia in my collection

Prunel

This was created almost 100 years ago. Just a little info for those who didn't know !

Eupatoria

If you want to gift someone (possibly a lady) a perfume and want to make sure the recipient is unlikely to hate it, pick this one. It’s light, inoffensive, smells like flowers, and it is Chanel — what is not to like?

In all seriousness, I bought a large bottle of this in an act of madness. It is good, but it is by no means outstanding. It feels like something Jo Malone could make for a lower price point. It’s just a fairytale version of gardenia. That’s it. Real gardenias have a much more complex scent that is often almost unpleasant; this gardenia takes the indolic notes out and leaves only the easy-on-the-nose bits.

It also doesn’t on me last at all; I have been going through that large bottle rather quickly because I am always refreshing it. I will use it up, but will not repurchase.

elmasdv

Dreamy, clean, childlike.. This is how I remember my beautiful scented erasers smelling like. The ones I could never bring myself to use in elementary school.

Kylix

No gardenia. I have it and I quite like it, but there is no gardenia in it.

ajraccounts

this is more "rich, fruity white floral" than gardenia, to me. i have to wonder if the people calling this an accurate gardenia have ever smelled a real gardenia. i have a gardenia bush that's blooming right now. this is much sweeter and fruiter, less creamy, less green, and doesn't have the somewhat dull background of mushroom that a real gardenia has. also, as some have noted, and feels worth emphasizing, gardenias cannot be processed for their scent. therefore, there is no such thing as gardenia essential oil, and it has to be recreated from other flowers/+synthetics. i should note that my version is the EDT and from the mid-2010s.

Enrium

Instead of the EDP from the Les Exclusifs line, my Gardénia miniature dates from the noughties. It is a refined white floral bouquet - smooth, creamy and powdery, with just the right amount of sweetness and a hint of greenery in the background. Initially created to represent the camellia - the odourless flower favoured by Coco Chanel and famously associated with the Chanel brand - gardenias were the closest substitute, despite it being impossible to extract oil directly from the flower itself. More tuberose than gardenia as a result, this is still a beautiful scent that delivers timeless elegance in typical Chanel fashion.

The white floral accord that forms the crux of this scent develops from the initial spray. Clean jasmine and a hint of orange blossom are most evident at the early stages. Green notes add some dewy freshness, complementing the florals beautifully. I get a hint of violet in there too. Restrained tuberose joins the bouquet after a little while, adding a lush, powdery edge. I'm unsure if there is a gardenia note in here - it could simply be the combination of the other white floral notes rendering a gardenia-like effect. There are very few true gardenia scents that truly resemble the flower, and I am unsure if this one is aptly named.

As it dries down, the white florals become increasingly powdery and a little soapy, with vanilla and coconut adding smooth creamy sweetness to the base, complementing the florals beautifully. It becomes woody and musky as it fades, drying down to become a softly sweet musky-floral skin scent. Sillage and longevity are moderate.

A classic, deeply elegant feminine scent, this is easy to wear, suiting both occasions and everyday. A nice bridal choice for a spring/summer wedding. However, it is not a true "gardenia" scent, and possibly is not special enough to justify the price. Beautiful regardless. 3.5/5.

chrisk252

Floral, powdery, smooth....I'm testing this next to Beige and between the two, I prefer Beige, which seem lighter, more transparent, and more ethereal. Gardenia is less transparent, thicker, less ethereal, and less sparkly. Still a very high quality, smooth, natural, floral scent. A beautiful scent but just lacking that last bit of Chanel magic that Beige has. Both are too feminine for me, but glad to have them.

Checking the nose, I see it's Ernest Beaux of No. 5 fame. I definitely notice some common themes in the background. Nice.

It's nice when you first spray. White floral and all, but it doesn't last long on me. too light for my liking, not worth the price tag

Gardenia by Beaux Ernest differs from the single gardenias of the Les Exclusifs collection and is an application of woody violets and aldehyde white flowers.
N°5, N°22, I have captured some of Beaux Ernest's very personal matching habits from these two works. I don't know if he prefers this. Beaux Ernest will always show a kind of personal signature in the preparation of his perfume.
For example, the use of ylang-ylang and jasmine.
The 2000-year-old limited edition Gardenia is a 30ml rectangular bottle with flat white flowers and a formula similar to the Gardenia from Les Exclusifs, which is lackluster.
The second time I smelled a bottle of Gardenia of unknown age, with the EDT label attached.
My intuition is that it's a modified recipe from Jacques Polge.
The first version of the old bottle, this Gardenia, was made around 1960 and no later than 1980, according to the seller's clues about the time of purchase.
Gardenias cannot be extracted, and perfumers can use any technique to create the gardenia they imagine.
This 60's (probably?) EDT is a creamy, creamy tuberose that is silky and ripe.
Its structure is not so tight, and the creamy tuberose looks rich and elegant against the fresh and bright orange blossom, powdery ylang-ylang and jasmine aromas.
EDT is light, flavorful vanilla and patchouli to pull back some weight and stabilize Gardenia. The other part, the involvement of synthetic raw materials... Beaux Ernest is a known pioneer in the use of synthetic raw materials, so I can be sure that Gardenia, if it is Beaux Ernest's version, with chemical aromas harmonizing nature, must be very good.
The overall scent of Gardenia is linear, and the performance is not bad.
I noticed a hint of green in the background.
One blogger described it as "a string of bronzed pearls." So true!
Compared to the original, Gardenia by Jacques Polge is a sweet and plump gardenia, gorgeous and dense.
The traces of the 80s are clearly audible, and this is raucous Gardenia.
I have tried three versions in total.
The new formula may be reorganized with raw materials that have not yet been discovered in the Beaux Ernest era. It is completely different. The two versions of Les Exclusifs and Jacques Polge and Beaux Ernest are almost all different fragrances.
Although Gardenia is not faithful to the original.
I have heard that the Jacques Polge edition still bears a resemblance to Beaux Ernest's Gardenia.

This smells heavenly. If I want to boost my confidence, I will wear this perfume with my blazer on and I feel empowered with this. My favorite fragrance and it hurt because it's so expensive.

paryapg

I have an almost full bottle of this that I will swap for COROMANDEL if anyone is interested.

AlexaRSandrina

This perfume is just perfect.

Please Fragrantica, add a page for Extrait version!
My review is for extrait, 2601 batch.
Delicate and so beautiful, it almost hurts. This is so thoroughly floral, I feel the petals tickling my nostrils when I breathe it in. This is a beautiful gardenia with notes of jasmine (naturally, as they are related in nature). Slightly bitter, sweeter than a real flower, but unmistakingly gardenia. Yes , it's not a monster in projection or longevity, but it doesn't have to be. If your sense of smell is above average, you'll appreciate it.

coffeefifofum

It's what it says on the label: gardenia. A true, pure gardenia. I have mixed feelings about getting what smells like an essential oil from Chanel, but I guess they gave me exactly what they promised when so many who try to deliver this scent don't. It fades heavily in an hour and is gone in four. I tried it both as a dab and a spray and there was no meaningful difference.

Nataliemarie

@Myra83. Chanel has ruined all of them. Watered down memories. They know we will probably still buy it ,..& the up & coming know no different, so they will buy it too. SAD. Buy Hermes, Creed, or Liz Taylor.

myra83

The note so lovely.. but much less deep and powering compared to edt version classic. Chanel what you have done to this Gabriel coco heritage??? I wore not more than 40 minute and i couldnt smell at all. Even try hard to snif but doesnt smell anything after 40 minute.. my question.. why you guys should reformula it and destroyed precious quality of this beautiful creation??

Callista25

I love gardenia flowers and some attempts at gardenia perfumes, so perhaps it was my high expectations. I dont get this perfume at all. It doesnt smell like gardenia or a Chanel.

EllaDe7

Accurate gardenia, opens with a jasmine smell, settles with tuberose.

FreshDejavu

A quick note on the lasting power - first time I tried it it probably lasted only one hour on my skin, so after seeing some reviews here confirming my suspicion I left the tester in the drawer. However, a year later I tried it again today. 12 hours later I can still smell it on my wrists.... After a year of crazy perfume buying and testing during quarantine I’ve also evolved to appreciate this scent so much better - it smells elegant and classy.

Gitanagitara

This is very elegant and nice -fits both for the office and leisure. Love it!! I tested it in Germany and regretted that i did not buy it at once- one year after the first try-my boyfriend bought it for my birthday in Denmark. He did not know that i wanted it --so the gift was 100 % up to my taste...

Unfurling Blossoms

It's not a photorealistic floral but rather a perfume-y interpretation of the perfumers ideal romanticized version of a flower. This interpretation is very delicate (for a Chanel), translucent, with lightly sweet notes - just a microscopic bit of syrup heightened with ghost-like citric notes (barely even noticeable) to anchor (light light sweetness) and brighten (light light citric aspects). However, the syrupy notes of "fruit" are artificial in nature or at least take on an artificial accord since everything is blended so well it becomes mainly a one note fragrance of artificiality and boring flatness.

If you love Gardenia soliflores and are looking for a photorealistic one you need to sample Soliflore Gardenia by Dame Perfumery. It is so hyper-realistic you can even smell the waxiness of the petals and its milky color. Jeffrey Dame is a master at photorealistic indoles.

T_S

For years I've tried to find a Chanel fragrance I could add to my "signature" perfumes, and I guess it's just not in the cards for me. I had high hopes for Chanel Gardenia becauseI own and love several white floral perfumes, but this one fell flat. It's not bad, it's just sort of "blah". At first it smells like plain white gardenias with no complexity, and after about ten minutes on my skin I just smell like potpourri drawer liners or guest bathroom soap. It's unfortunate because I ordered it off the Chanel Paris website and I was really hoping this could be The One, but I have to give this one a pass.

dnque

Too much toilet freshener for my taste.

jacmac

fleeting, forgettable. Smells nice - green, lightly floral & soapy for less than an hour and then, poof - where did it go? At this price point, I want a powerhouse gardenia fragrance and this isn't it.

abra_

Too linear and it's on blast; nothing subtle here. I will perhaps layer a tiny bit under my Beige.

ms.ttran64

This is very light and subtle. Maybe TOO light. It’s a pretty floral, as I love the opening. But it dries down to something faint and soapy. It does not last on my skin at all.

AnitaHendricks

Soft, clean and lovely! You could wear this perfectly at a nice business dinner. It's subtile enough while it's still very sophisticated. I can picture this scent in combination with a crisp, white blouse for example.

Wendyladywj

I have a sample of the EDT. It is a soft, pretty floral scent. No aldehydes. It is a little melancholy. It is sweeter, warmer and softer than Chanel Beige.

aenflex

This is a timid floral with none of the sharpness or green notes that I appreciate in a white floral. It's sweet and light, (yet without any zing or sparkle), and it just falls flat for me.

In fact, I find it quite tropical. It's creamy, jasmin-y banana-coconut, fruity. When I wear it, I get much more of the banana, some citrus, and coconut. It's too sweet.
For a tropical floral, if that's what it's trying to be, it lacks any of the spice, woods or musk that makes beachy scents pop and linger. This has no weight. There is absolutely no sexiness in this fragrance. I actually prefer Bronze Goddess or Soleil Blanc to this if I want a beach scent. And there are many white florals I'd rather wear, including the uber-inexpensive Malachite. I'm wishing I spent the money on something else.
This stuff has such poor longevity and weak projection. It's completely gone from my skin in an hour at most.
And of course, it's just an approximation of Gardenia using Jasmine, Tuberose and whatever else. I don't find it even close to real Gardenia, it's almost all Jasmine. Blue for women by RL is a much more realistic, (and much less expensive), Gardenia to me.

I own a few Chanels, have sampled almost all of their current offerings, (Cuir de Russie is my hands down favorite from the Exclusifs). Gardenia is, to me, the lamest and least 'Chanel' I've ever tried. No strength, no longevity, no stink and no gusto. I have the EDP, and it's as fleeting and light as a skin scent. And forgettably boring to me.
I tested it in Greece and bought it at the airport later on another trip. I regret it. It's just not for me, and rather disappointing for a Chanel, never mind an Exclusif.

Bubbles1964

I grow gardenias and have been spending time trying to find a scent that captures their beautiful aroma. Chanel's Gardenia EDT is not it. This comes across surprisingly bright, I don't pick up any creamy gardenia or coconut notes. It's a very pretty white floral scent with decent performance that stays one dimensional, nothing complex. A pass for me.

hails_blogger

I was so fortunate to be gifted a bottle of this without having ever smelt it. This is such a lovely, fresh, creamy fragrance. It does smell very true to my favourite flower of all time, the Gardenia. It’s not a loud fragrance and the sillage isn’t amazing but it is elegant, ladylike and classy.

ellaquintero

Oh my, well... This has to be my favorite perfume until now, and I've had quite a few.

Yes, it is very expensive.
Yes, it is soft.
Yes, it is not long lasting.
Yes, it is gorgeous.

One cannot have everything, nothing is perfect.

Chanel Gardènia is elegant, luxurious, yet soft and innocent. I smell gardenia all the way, until the base comes and the coconut gives it a creamier feeling to it.

I love that tuberose has a support role in this one, because it normally is the leading role of its fragrances. In CG, tuberose just helps the gardenia to stand out and lead the way.

In me it lasts a good 6 hours, with a moderate to soft sillage.

It's feminine, elegant, classy, pretty, and very true to itself.

Amal Elyahyaoui

it was a gift from a very dear friend... when i opened the gift box and saw chanel i felt so happy but when i smelled it i was shocked... I couldn't say anything to my friend coz i didn't want to disappoint her as i know that she spent time to chose me the best perfume... BUT

in the beginning, you will actually find it too strong and overwhelming and even not bearable especially if you generally don't like floral & sweety perfume, BUT
please, give it a little time to cool down and enjoy the watery green breeze after that comes out of it; it shortly turns to be animalic and earthy and quiet.
i recommend it for spring & summer time and for those who like Gardenia or Casablanca flower or white flowers in general.. it is a genuine true scent of gardenia

bunad

tried the edt on my wrist.
beautiful heavy white flowers notes, mostly jasmine and Lilly of the valley to me. No coconut, no fruits, no sandalwood. Very intense and warm, almost nose eating.
But still like it, good to have it in my collection, just to take a sniff from time to time

Chic-girl

This is absolutely beautiful. I have 35ml edt (flat bottle with white cap). Don't know it's age but it's very strong and lasts long. It was used when I bought it, nearly full. I have never smelled edp.
I don't think Fracas smells similar. They are totally different. Madonna's Truth or Dare smells similar than Fracas. Though I didn't like ToD and gave it away. It was so strong and nauseating like bubblegum or something.
Anyway, who does not like this? It's fresh, not too much vanilla, like many Chanel does. I don't think it annoys many people.
It has only little dislikes, and rating is high: 4.08.

Edit: I noticed that those who like edt Gardenia, like many other same fragrances than I do (for example Diorissimo, La Chasse aux Papillons and L'Heure Bleue). Those who like edp, like different fragrances.
That makes me think, would I even love edp as much as I love this. Edp doesn't have so many notes; it lacks tuberose, jasmine, vetiver, sandalwood.. all notes that I love. Maybe it smells more vanilla, I don't know..

tiababy

I almost love this, the fresh gardenia/coconut combo is so nice, but the fruity notes ruin it for me and the jasmine feels out of place, even though I normally love jasmine. too much going on here.

miako

I was quite anti-white-flowers... until I met this one.

We had gardenia bushes in the garden, which would smell strongly every time it rained, and I used to HATE it. like really really, shut-the-windows HATE it because it was just so heavy. I felt like somebody had chained weights on my heart every time I smelled it. So obviously when I first saw the name I went "NOPE!".

Until one day my friend who I see about once a year smelled AMAZING. Like, I can't even talk to you properly until I know what you're wearing-AMAZING. and hey, I know my perfumes. I don't frequently come across ones that I don't know, but I didn't recognize this one, and when I asked, I was STUNNED that it was "Gardenia".

I was in such disbelief I remember trailing off mid-conversation.

So off to the chanel boutique I went. trot trot trot.. and I picked it up, (still in disbelief!) smelled it... and I have never taken out my credit card faster.

I still don't understand why I love it so much. Jasmine, ylang ylang, gardenia, any of your usual "white flowers".. they really shouldn't interest me, but this one finds the loopholes in my rock-hard-brain and demands my love.

It just smells so CLEAN, ELEGANT, and EXPENSIVE. like a pristine, fully-tailored-just-to-suit-you, pure white shirt of the most luxurious cotton. The kind that everyone wants in their wardrobe but never actually manages to find...

luxurious and classy. who wouldn't want to smell like that?!

I'm actually quite annoyed about this "find", because now I have to go smell everything I "thought" I didn't like, just in case I do!!!

definitely worth a sniff (and a purchase)!

nordhaul

This is a beautiful, sparkling perfume, rich, grandmotherly
(Maternal, wise, mature, nurturing, feminine) high society.

carolyn.parker

This is a fragrance I take out when it's summer and I go to the beach and to the boardwalk on either my favorite beach town in the world Myrtle Beach or even up to Atlantic City New Jersey. This is a feel-good, delicious creamy dessert made up of white florals. Wearing it one forgets it's a Chanel. Like with Chanel Beige (which I feel is a modern twist on this one) it's a very youthful gourmand type of floral. The coconut definitely comes through and smells like sweet scented coconut water. There's plenty of vanilla too, and fruit notes. It has a tropical air but it is not trying to be Femme Rochas or Balenciaga Rumba. It still maintains it's composure and behaves like a lady. There's a sun tan lotion feel to it. Smells like when you are basking in the sun flat on your stomach on the beach with the warm sun on your skin. I love how it feels on my skin how it smells and everything about it. It's been compared to Jungle Gardenia but I think this is much better and less aromatic than Jungle Gardenia, and certainly more youthful and more of a gourmand-gardenia.

The florals include orange blossom which is detectable at the first stage, some white flowers mainly jasmine, gardenia and tuberose. These white flowers are not frightening a la Giorgio Beverly Hills when overdone. In fact they are soapy, soothing, creamy. It even matches up with skin cream skin care products that smell good. I love the gardenia in this scent. That gardenia is a proud floral queen, dipped in coconut oil and vanilla cream. The dry down is musky and green. It is slightly herbal and green but it evokes tiare plumeria bushes in Hawaii not a botanical garden. This is sporty and can be worn outdoors and in fact I recommend it to be worn outdoors in public as opposed to in bed or at home. This doesn't always relax me. It just makes me want to go out and do something: the beach, swimming in a pool, volleyball, or having lunch al fresco. This is a real crowd pleaser and it always attracts people around me and I get compliments on it. A fine vacation fragrance to carry with you when you travel. This is mature but might be worn by younger 20 something year olds who appreciate Chanels although they might want to try wearing Beige first before this one.

Definite day wear. And like I said it's perfect for wearing while traveling on vacation especially to tropical beaches Hawaii Caribbean and so forth. This is also one of the if not the most floral out of all the Chanel fragrances. Usually the classic Chanels are big on aldehydes and segue into citrus-floral or turn into musk. With Gardenia the white flowers are front and center and while it contains musk the whole thing turns into a very delicious almost powdery vanilla and creamy fruity kind of aroma. It's sporty and very beautiful. It matches up with maxi dresses and sundresses. It reminds me of ladies in big hats at the beach in the 50's. My mother would have worn this and if she did I never knew. It is a vintage but it also has a modern bent to it because it lacks aldehyde and has that creamy edible vanilla goodness to it and fruitiness. This Chanel is unfortunately one of the least commercially successful and one of the least known or talked about. Why that is I don't know. It needs to be given more credit as a fine white floral fragrance. Ah, I love it!

susannea

I bought this fragrance years ago and never finished the bottle. I also have copious amounts of Madonna's Truth or Dare and yesterday found a bargain bottle of Kim Kardashian, Kim Kardashian. I thought I'd have a blind test to see how they compare.

ToD is sweet, coconutty, has traces of bubblegum and generally is strong on high notes.KK is lighter, greener, leafy and fresher.

The Chanel smells the strongest on card but I get a very slight pong of the rank water smell when you get when empty a vase of wilting flowers. My bottle hasn't gone off it has always been kept in a cool dark place. The Chanel is also the spiciest of the three.

I do like them all. Unfortunately I've never smelt Fracas, I'd like to test it against these three. However for the money you can't go too wrong with the cheap fragrances. To me they certainly don't smell that inferior.

My Gran kept Chanel Gardenia for special evenings. Her most glamorous years would have been in the 1930s and 40s. I've sampled the edt and it is beautiful. I'm sure Gran said it would easily last all night. Today it hasn't even made an hour!
I would pounce on a bottle if it really lasted.
This is a very wearable soft gardenia along with its leaves and stems. Lovely for a bride.

About Vintage Chanel Gardenia

Let Me Take You Back In Time Via My Memories

1938

My mother wore this perfume in the summer time. It was a perfume I recall as being the very first perfume I smelled as a small child. It was also the fragrance that enchanted my father and drew him to my mother. It was a vacation scent, a beach perfume. My mother wore it to her honeymoon. This is rather like Jungle Gardenia by Tuvache, with a bit of the Chanel No. 22 body thrown into it. This is a white floral fragrance of sweet spiciness and deliciousness that was very different from all other Chanel fragrances which sold in the 30s. It's color is white but it's not as soapy or powdery as No. 22. Instead it's a green scent with green notes including patchouli leaves. This smells exactly like putting your nose into a bush of gardenia flowers or tiare/plumeria.

The exotic scent opens with a little bit of aldehydes (not listed)and green notes. The gardenia blossoms and she is the dominant floral note. She is also aided by vanilla which is true to the actual scent of gardenias - they smell like vanilla. The scent develops into other floral notes of tuberose and jasmine. These are extraordinarily potent flowers so there's no hiding them from anyone. They are loud and proud white flowers. The tuberose is rather like Giorgio Beverly Hills which I actually do enjoy. There is also something of La Panthere by Cartier in this scent. It's such a diverse and complex scent.

The base is a potpourri of musk, vanilla bean, patchouli and vetiver. It smells herbal, aromatic, creamy, green and beige. It has a clean finish courtesy of that vetiver and smells exactly like wet grass. The scent has a sweetness and femininity that beckons you, like an island girl with white flowers in her hair. This has a body lotion or sun tan lotion type of scent as well. I'm sure that it's because of the sweetness and creaminess of vanilla.

Atop of all the other notes of white flowers vanilla and musk, there is a fruitiness to this perfume whose mood is festive and flirty. It's a sweet mélange of nondescript fruit including peach and citrus, or orange blossom with citrus thrown into it. At the dry down stage there is also a milky coconut. The perfume is like scented bikinis and sun tan lotion and it has a sunny and relaxed casual vibe.

Far from being elegant and formal, she is a girl who seems to only be seen in the day time. At night she is nowhere to be found, like gardenia petals closing up at night only to open up again in the light of day. It's as beautiful a gardenia fragrance as one can conceive. I love this perfume because it was the first perfume my little nose ever smelled all those years ago. World War 2 lay ahead but when I smelled this perfume it seemed like London could never experience bombings, and my world was safe and happy. My mother loved this scent along with No. 22 which she said were similar. She adored white florals. I wore this perfume after she died as a honey moon and vacation scent as well. I wore it to Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Bonaire, Curacao and Tahiti. It's an exotic island gardenia.

Strawberries and cream!

This is surprisingly gourmand on my skin, soft and ethereal, sweet. On me the fruit note is strawberry and the coconut combines with the vanilla to create a creamy chocolate note. Evokes strawberries dipped in white chocolate, served with a glass of Brut Rosé champagne. The gardenia does indeed remind me of Tuvache Jungle Gardenia in tone, but not at all in projection. Jungle Gardenia can be smelled from a satellite orbiting the earth. Chanel Gardenia EDT lasts about three hours on my skin, and then becomes an elusive skin scent.

But lovely, so lovely. A bright white light, quickly becoming faint; never sharp, nor screechy, and not predominately a white floral on me. Although the florals are very much present, and very much white, the vanilla and coconut give the gardenia a creamy gourmand feel, while the orange blossom and jasmine are sweet and feminine, not animalic; clean but not soapy.

If you are going to get this, you might as well go for the 200 ml bottle, since you may need to reapply. I find that I need four sprays applied every four hours if I want others to enjoy this as much as I.

I get little to no musk, just a little soft creamy sandalwood and a mere hint of patchouli. Not woody or spicy at all, very pure and crystalline on drydown, all vanilla and coconut. And no aldehydes! Kind of young and innocent, not at all Rubenesque or earthy, but with a definite sparkle.

I honestly wish I didn't love it so much. Now I will be on another quest, this time for the parfum, and of course the vintage. I hear there was EDP once long ago, and what can I say? I must try it.

Chanel Gardenia.
Una passeggiata estiva.
Tutta la delicatezza e lo stile di Coco Chanel riversato in questo profumo.
Una gardenia che si posa delicatamente sulla tuberosa, il tutto inebriato con del cocco, adoro.

Fragrance Review For Gardenia Chanel

Top Notes: Orange Blossom Green Notes

Middle Notes: Fruit Tuberose Jasmine Gardenia

Base Notes: Sandalwood Patchouli Musk Vetiver Coconut Vanilla

This is a beautiful white floral fragrance and very different from any of the Chanel fragrances. This was originally released after the success of Chanel No. 5 and No. 22. I was surprised that this frag lacks aldehydes and even a citrus neroli opening. The opening is definitely green. It has a sweet scent of synthetic fruit scents that I can't quite make out. It is mostly a bouquet of beautiful white flowers: gardenia, tuberose and jasmine. The gardenia is itself a very strong scent and smells similar to vanilla so it was no surprise to identify a separate matching vanilla scent. The base has all the ingredients I enjoy in perfumery: sandalwood, patchouli, musk and vetiver. The whole thing is aromatic, green, and at the same time a classic white floral. It has a lot in common with fragrances like Jungle Gardenia by Tuvache. The coconut is also a nice touch. I could have done without the fruit notes or the vanilla but it's a really sweet and lovely spring and summer gardenia scent. If you like floral fragrances and especially white florals this is what you want. Spring is here and so I crave flowers.

Southern Blonde

Wow. This one is a heavy hitting gardenia with a lot of other stuff. This frag has it going on! I smelled something green at first possibly the patchouli reaching up from the base and up to my nose. There is also some sweet fruit notes, nothing I can make out clearly other than citrus and possibly a peach. There is a ton of gardenia petals on this thing and it's as perfumy and strong as any gardenia power perfume I've come across. Gardenias actually smell like vanilla bean so it makes sense that this has as much vanilla as it has gardenia. The two notes match up. This is a vanilla and gardenia scent not terribly realistic but still very beautiful and very powerful. It's appropriate for day time spring and summer wear. I even associate this scent with the beach or having a day near/at the beach by the strand/marina, a scent to wear while sailing or to get a tan by a pool. Very sexy, strong, white floral, and vanillic. Delicious.

diane.lee

While I understand the concerns about longevity, I personally prefer the softer tones of this fragrance. It lasts fine for me. I like the fact that one has to be "up close & personal" to get the full effect of this.

Gigi The Fashionista

Although not a heavy hitting gardenia, and far from smelling like real gardenias I've picked up and smelled, this is a beautifully formulated synthetic floral perfume from the ever classy house of Chanel. I have never smelled the vintage which was apparently not a big seller. The reformulated version from the 80's is what appears to be selling today. There is no way the old vintage formula contained notes of fruit, coconut and vanilla. These notes were added for the reformulation because they conform to today's standards and tastes in perfume. Gardenia is strong here but it's not the only showy flower as it's singing a duet with the tuberose. Ever smell gardenia and tuberoses together in one bouquet? Powerful stuff. Jasmine is there but it takes a backseat. The white floral scent is lovely, feminine, enchanting and dreamy. The vanilla and coconut scents are sweet. I couldn't detect any patchouli but I was able to smell sandalwood. I do love the reformulation and have both the EDP and EDT. EDP you get more of the fruit notes but the EDT is purely floral. The aldehydes in this fragrance are over really quickly as it turns into more of a green scent like it was lily of the valley and instead of a citric opening it has orange blossom. Flowers that last forever. This stuff was on me for two days even after showering. Divine.

rschmidt65

This is a perfect Gardenia scent. My search is over and I've realized that I don't really like gardenia. But still, this is exquisitely done.
The coconut does a wonderful job tempering the harshness of the gardenia so it's a bit creamier and more gentle than the real thing. But still very true to the flower itself.
As with Jersey and Beige, the Chanel musk accord turns to cheap shampoo on me. Even so, I can't miss how lovely this scent is.
It is very fleeting however, lasting only about five hours on someone who seems to get better longevity then most out of fragrances.

miletas89

If I could describe this perfume in one word, it would be "lovely." It is so extremely feminine and elegant. The gardenia isn't a heavy or particularly creamy one. In fact, I sense a note that is somewhere along the lines of linden here. Definitely white floral, a little bit fresh, but a lot more "perfume-y" than "fresh." Keep in mind I'm writing this in winter.

The perfume opens up differently in the summertime. I had the pleasure of smelling it at the Chanel boutique in Hawaii last summer, and there, in the heat and humidity, it came off as lush, tropical and refreshing at the same time.
If you spray the back of the neck or ears, the scent will travel up to the hair and stay longer.

Like so many others have said before me, it is very feminine and very befitting Chanel's elegance.

LadyDi

So disappointing. Smells nice for about ten minutes. No complexity. Not up to Chanel standards.

mongibella

I wish the pure parfum version of this masterpiece had an own page! I have just bought it at Harrods, and it is beyond beautiful. but this is such a delicate, honest, ethereal, exciting something, like an angel would wear! To me, it is pure light. Very feminine. The pure parfum version is VERY different from the EDT! It is much softer, rounder, creamier.

almondcookie

Other than Beige, Gardenia is one of my favourites in Les exclusif range. The white florals are very noticeable. I do not detect any fruits but I get very little coconut creaminess. Soft yet long lasting. Please note, I tested this on a card, It might be better on the skin.

naomin

This is one thing on my skin, something else in my hair, and something else on my shirt. Interesting! But not very strong? Smells like it should be strong. I like the sharp floral start and the soft kinda sweet floral vanilla drydown. No better or no worse than I expected it to be. Could be good for when you need to smell lovely and sophisticated...briefly haha. Maybe this could be Cinderella's scent for the ball. Charm him and run before the clock strikes midnight and your scent disappears and your coach turns back into a pumpkin.

rostov14

Coco naughty smell of the acacia blossom. Luminous, lively, luring!
Definitely, no problems with buoyancy here. This Gardenia is less fragile, less attenuated than some other Les Exclusif beauties IMO, but being not so flawless makes her even more interesting, Lol!
She is a mulatto, a half-sister of Beige. Honey, you are delicious!
Long lasting exotic affair.....Certainly hot!

chezzig01

I would never have tried this a few years ago.. I tried it a few weeks ago at the Chanel Counter. I sprayed and immediately regretted it! until a few minutes later I could not keep my nose off the top of my hand. I bought it and I've sprayed it 3 times a day everyday since. Beautiful!!!!!!!

pauroj

luca turin ruined this one for me, after reading his review i can not spray this one anymore without thinking of cheap wipes , is pleasant , but if you go for an exclusif of chanel go for another one , maybe beige or jersey or the powerhouses like sycamore .

RayF

Extremely feminie, almost unbearably soft and elegant:) Not my style but still appreciate its simplicity.

Cocochanel4ever

I never tried Gardenia from Les Exclusifs line, but I had a chance to try vintage edt. I loved it so much- the smell is smooth and bright. Perfect for early spring. I ordered vintage Gardenia extrait and it's better than edt- long lasting, strong, lovely. I think 15 ml bottle will last me very long time since you only need one dab, that's how potent it is. Wonderful scent. My review for vintage Chanel Gardenia.

giasan

Really nice scent but it lasts too short.

brahmindiva

I was so disappointed in this perfume. It really doesn't smell like a gardenia at all. It's not bad, just not gardenia. The biggest problem however is that 30 minutes after applying it, there's no fragrance at all. It just totally disappears. When you combine the so-so fragrance with the disappointing longevity, it's not on my list to repurchase.

theuntrainednose

Tried a spray on the store.

A creamy white floral, well done, not too strong. Not for me.

A bit far from my taste: an almost pure floral with no green/fresh notes nor any woody note. I wasn't able to smell the sandalwood, nor the vetiver, nor the coconut. I did smell the jasmine, plus some denser white flower note which I couldn't recognize. I do smell something like a hint of banana (or banana peel), which, while interesting, sometimes makes my stomach feel weird (I am very sensitive to banana notes, and only like them very rarely).

Not for me, though I do recognize it has interesting points.

kl99

Milk of Gardenia.

diamondsr4ever

Beautiful gardenia/tuberose.

Amazingly expensive for such low sillage and longevity.

It has lasted just one hour on me. Such a fleeting beauty and I have cheaper gardenia/tuberose and much longer lasting fragrances in my wardrobe. Glad I only bought a card sample.

estherica

Completely agree with Arbre Amber's review. This has nothing to do with the scent of a natural gardenia.
Mine is just blossoming and the scent of gardenias is deep, mushroomy, warm and hard to describe. There's some dirt in it.
Chanel's Gardenia interpretation is a clean soapy floral, on the light green side. It's okay, not bad, but not good. And not what would come to my mind when I think of gardenias.
I wonder why some people say, this perfume smells like true gardenias. Did they ever smell them?

tubereuse

Angelic, luxe, pure, bright, soft, uber-feminine. A beautiful burst of white floral & gardenia for Coco’s favourite camellias. Authentic gardenia scent but a bit light compared to others out there.

CarmendyNola

Gardenia is warm, alluring, extremely feminine and soft. It has a musky backbone that makes it discernibly Chanel but the main note is obviously pure gardenia. On those bad hair days when you have nothing to wear and your already running late, one spritz will make everything just right! Just makes you feel pretty and feminine. I would say if you love Chanel scents and haven't tried this one, it's a must have.

FinerThings

When I first tried Chanel Gardenia I was trying to figure out what it smelled like and then it hit me: Dior Poison. I thought I was crazy until I started reading up on Chanel Gardenia online and there were several comments from people who said it smelled a little like Poison. So there it is, my sniffer is not so off after all!

Bottom line is Gardenia is a tad too synthetic for my taste and I can't get over the Poison comparison (I dislike Poison.) It is a nice enough white floral blend and it is very feminine so I can see how many people would like it, but overall, it just does not cut it for me and I am a floral perfume lover.

Arbre Amer

I was very curious to see how Chanel treated a bigger than life floral note, which also happens to be my favourite white flower.

Chanel's interpretation is a very sheer, almost transparent formation of white petals in the centre of which a tuberose made of glass can be found. This artificial flower hybrid has none of the sappy, waxy, fungal, indolic and generally dirty or unpleasant aspects of the real thing because it is not rooted in soil but in a hazy lukewarm beige musk, the likes of which can be found in many feminine products and toiletries.

The common nature of the musk aside, one cannot find other flaws in this flower and strangely this is where my problems with it start. I find it a very unfaithful interpretation because it is exactly these omitted flaws that give gardenia its character. For me gardenia is all about volume, an overload of the senses that results in a creamy meltdown. It is a floral that has no sense of measure, an olfactory expression of abandon and decadence. It is the flower of sex, sex and more SEX! One can choose to make an abstract interpretation of it but there is a limit to what can be omitted before gardenia becomes unrecognisable and Chanel has crossed that line. As a result Gardenia is not unlike an angel, beautiful and full of grace but sexless, not even sensual and eventually not like a gardenia at all.

It is not bad and some of you might even love it. Others might hate it. I don't hate it, I just don't love it but in this case this is a big let down...

Mortazuma

I had the pleasure of trying on this fragrance during its relaunch and even though it was a new formulation, it still held a classy and feminine tone as is a tradition in the House of Chanel.

The staying power of this was superior than most modern fragrances. As the name implies, first and foremost you'd gather the scent of gardenia but then it begins to whisper a path to a secret garden as people get nearer.

Overall, a lovely, non-cloying, timeless fragrance that makes a perfect gift that can be appreciated at any age.

Antares811

Simply divine.
Unfortunately, no lasting power on my skin.

FashionSavvyDolly

This is the perfect summertime fragrance. I reach for Gardenia when I'm looking for a feminine, soft and understated fragrance. I love this perfume. Love at first whiff...

woodlandwalk

For the clean white floral lover. Virginal, pure with a 'butter wouldn't melt in its mouth' vibe. It doesn't project strongly (two hours then fades to a slight soapiness). The touch of fruit is slightly pear-like and the smidgen of coconut rounds it out somewhat

Almost clinical, white elegance though, no-one will dare touch you!

arae

This is my favorite everyday, summer scent. I adore the lightness of the scent, very sexy, very feminine. I spray it on as soon as I get out of the shower, and reapply midday. At night, if I want something a little heavier, it layers well with other more intense florals, like my other favorite Le Perfum by Elie Saab. I get compliments from men and women alike. For anyone who does not like the intensity of most white florals this might be the perfume for you! It is an easy wear perfume, one that never offends, always tantalizes!

antfarm

I tried this in the EDT and fell in love--it was a creamy, green white floral that smelled luminous, feminine, and modern without being sharp. Unfortunately the EDT only lasted on my skin for about an hour, so I bought the parfum concentration on ebay.

The parfum is some seriously precious, expensive stuff. I felt like I was opening a box full of liquid gold. I put it on, and it was like gardenias glowing on the surface of my skin. (It's probably one of the only white florals I can wear--most of them get too indolic or smell like buttered popcorn with my skin chemistry, but Chanel Gardenia works very well).

When I smelled the parfum concentration, I imagined soft white flowers floating on the surface of a green lake. It reminds me of Chanel Cristalle eau Verte, only all voluptuous and past puberty. It lasts a lot longer than the Gardenia EDT, although projection is close to the body. That's okay it doesn't fill the room though-- it's like Chanel Gardenia is just sitting on my skin whispering me secrets like a funny gal pal.

EDIT: I tried it on again today, and I'm going to have to sell this one. It faded off and was completely gone within two hours, which doesn't justify the price tag. Don't know why it lasted on my skin one day and disappeared the next. Skin moisture maybe?

alexis.mascitti

First review, and I have to defend this perfume. Although the commenters on this board are relatively kind, I am sick to DEATH of the haters of this perfume. I am a girl who was raised on Joy and No.5. Other reviews on OTHER boards (which will remain nameless) and a certain Mr Turin reject this scent out of hand, which is infuriating to me. His comment "This isn't gardenia" Well no Sh** Sherlock. Gardenias are un-extractable. And anyone who read ANYTHING about the development of the scent knows it was meant to be an ode to the EXPERIENCE of the smell of Gardenia. After reading what fragrance "experts" have to say about this lovely, creamy white floral scent, I know can saftely say the Emperor Turin has no clothes.

canadianpetite

Beautifully soft and feminine but gardenia and my nose do not get along (piercing headache and feel being smothered). Not so sad as there are so many others in the Exclusifs line to love and own!

Perhaps Tom Jones said it best when he sang "she's a lady.". One of the most gorgeous white florals I've experienced. A big, bouncy gardenia is most prominent, but jasmine and tuberose have their prim little places at the party. Absolutely lovely!
Also, if a man is comfortable with pretty florals, he should try this too. I could well imagine this on a Dandy.

Imadele

I am curious as to which of the Marc Jacobs perfumes is being referred to in these reviews .. Thank you.

moonwalker

Absolutely beautiful, airy and feminine CREAMY gardenia fragrance with the hint of orange blossom and green notes - absolutely stunning!!! However, it lasted only about 1,5 hour. For the prices Chanel charges I would expect more lasting power.

PricklyAndHot

I wouldn't say that this fragrance smells as a typical fragrance with a gardenia note. I would say that I feel more citruses and vanilla a little bit. It's rather light to my nose than heavy. Not bad, but not interesting enough.

onebadbaby

Chanel Gardenia is just a beautiful dewy fresh floral fragrance. The gardenia note is beautifully represented and dominates the fragrance. It is light, yet slightly heady at first, but the silage is subtle. It does last quite well on the skin. For me, it could be a bit 'bigger', and I would love to find this scent in a more potent form.

fumehead

save yourself a couple of hundred pounds/dollars by buying the body shops 'moringa' body spray. smells identical and lasts longer.

muchachito

Bought the EdT for my wife. Has a lovely scent, but disappears in seconds! At least I spent a lot of money and my wife is disappointed... :-(

nikoleta1

For Gardenia lovers new perfume to check out by illuminum, called white gardenia, used by English princess. Love it.

leighhannah

I've tested about 15 different gardenia perfumes and this is easily my favorite. It is a soft classy scent for when you're in the mood for a ladylike floral. The EDT has a sharper edge I don't care for. But the EDP is well-rounded and pleasing and one dab on my wrist lasts all day. It doesn't change or develop on me, but that's just fine because I love the scent. I'd highly recommend the EDP if you can afford it. I would not recommend the EDT, or at least buy a small sample first.

silagelover

Gardenia is probably the "youngest" smelling member of les exclusifs, in terms of whats going in fragrances marketed to the under 30's. It is a sweet white floral with a definite fruity element, it is a wet/damp lush floral with no powder at all. This would probably be a starting point for anyone who is used to typical fruity florals and wants to explore Chanel scents. On my skin I get gardenia, soft gentle green notes, orange blossom, jasmine, tuberose and fruit, with a bit of vanilla, and tiny bit of coconut and sandalwood. I don't get any patchouli or vetiver at all. The sillage and lasting power of this fragrance is weak to say the least, i find I have to spray quite a bit on to get any effect, and 2-3 hours later its gone. Im hoping to get the parfum which I have heard is more tenacious, and maybe layer it with the eau du toilette to see if it makes a difference. I love gardenia sooo much just wish it would last longer!!

nita_tico

The1st chanel fragrance that doesn't makes me smell like an old lady...i really really love it..i have to buy it again even the price is so expensive

Absolutely the best gardenia Ever made. No one has ever come even remotely close. Not too strong. When dries down is very soft with boys of gardenia and vanilla - an awesome fragrance combination. La creme details

Gift from my mom, I don't like it at all. Makes my tummy turns...blah

Gardeniawhore

I'm sorry, but this smells absolutely nothing like a gardenia. I'm a little surprised, actually. Not that it doesn't even resemble the flower, because 99% of the perfumes bearing the name don't, but that such a cheap smelling perfume came out of the house of Chanel. I have the parfum, and it goes on very bitter green, then goes into a watery Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy note, and then it vanishes!! I mean, what the hell?! Couldn't they at least try to fake it with a high quality tuberose and jasmine? I've sampled a well preserved vial of the vintage original, and as one might expect, it is quite different, although still not resembling a gardenia too much. However, it was a beautiful, sophisticated smelling perfume. Sort of a green peppery white flower. When they try to "update" these old wonderful formulas they almost always screw it up - especially when they decide that things now need to be "lighter" and "fresher." Not always, but usually.

NaniFiona

Oh god, this is the smell of wealthiness... sophistication, money, breed, elegance! Can't wait to put my hands on a decant !

Mamako

Bought mine Chanel Gardenia EDT 20 years ago, hardly use it. The new Chanel Gardenia taste different and not as lasting.

Tusnelda

I am I the only one who gets a whiff of banana in the extrait?
I was disappointed. It's a brutal concoction. Not ethereal and sophisticated like I expected.

Jacster

I live in Sydney, Australia. It can get awfully hot and humid in the summer and one of those days I love to wear Chanel Gardenia. It is somewhat overpowering, but that is what I love about it in the heat, which is rather odd because I also love light fragrances on a hot day like Ralph Lauren Blue.

I have just the eau de toilette now but I really love the parfum, which I bought in a five-piece Christmas release set of miniatures. Pity it's so expensive in its full size!

Hallo_smiling

oh.. i do not have many words.. i bought it because i read the super good entries in this page,.. but i am totally disapointed.. it smells very soapy and not flowery at all .. it does not last at all .. and it is really expensive :S ..i am normally Chanel Fan but this one was not for me i kept wearing Chanel 22 or 5.

alfarom

Even the best sometimes fail and here Chanel failed. An harsh and cheap plastic/coconut white floral that would be an awful choice even as a freshener for a dog's basket. Meh...

i TOTALY agreee with one reviewer here..this scent is so so nice! i smell only flowers here tuberosa and orange blossom and jasmine...the scent was so strong better then jersey for first 1 hour...suddenly after 2 hours it was GONE! completely gone, i never experinced that before...until recently when i also tried one scent based on organe blossom(romantina)..those things cant last----pitty but thats how it is with white florals ....

Last month, I tested Les Exclusifs de Chanel Beige, Gardenia, Jersey and No.22.

I loved Gardenia so much that I bought the 15ml parfum immediately.

Gardenia is not as Chanel-like as No.22. It is simple and noble.

Chanel Gardenia reminds me of an elegant lady collecting her white bouquet from a local florist in a sunny spring morning.

Chanel Gardenia is so modern and timeless that it is hard to believe that this fragrance was orginally created in 1925! If it has been reworked, it's a successful recomposition!

A friendly reminder: the lasting power of the EDT is rather weak. The parfum is highly recommended.

Redlipstick

As another reviewer said, I also do not smell anything remotely similar to Fracas. Fracas is thick and cloying, and heavy on the tuberose. This is a light, fresh gardenia - almost a soliflore. Sillage and longevity aren't great, but it's a wonderful perfume. It's the only Chanel I've ever liked. The price is outrageous though. Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia is also a wonderful gardenia fume and can be found deeply discounted.

Timetoski

My apologies to the reviewer who smells similarities to Fracas. I have both the Chanel Gardenia and the RP Fracas and they don't smell even remotely alike (to me, at least). I wouldn't even say this is a soft or light version of fracas. Completely different. So if you don't care for Fracas, don't let that deter you from this fragrance.

greydove

This is so beautiful. This and 31 Rue Cambon are just gems of fragrances. Its the type of thing that seems deceptively simple until you realize the delicacy of the craftsmanship that went into it. Its like a simple white blouse that upon closer inspection has tiny, hand sewn stiches in intricate little designs on the fabric. Just perfect.

PiggyB

This is a review for the vintage one.
It smells very natural and I feel it contains Jasmin or Neroli like absolutes at higher concentration than the current version.
Very short lifetime, lesser projection but lovely, it is enough to amuse me and make me feel I want to smell more and more.
Newer version seems much more attractive kind, but there are something for me to stick to the vintage, it has a power to make me stop the clocks.
So natural and powerful, even layering to the current version might work.

4.5 Roses

Well worth investment, if you are an owner of lands on the moon or you have ever capitalized for the space exploration. It's OK also if you are a house wife of such husband(s).
I own one and have been using this charming bottle, but no more, very sorry.

Cylob

My favorite "women only" of Les Exclusifs. A beautiful, elegant and light flowery fragrance. Amazing!
Bummer I can't wear this. Believe me I tried, but it just won't work.
Women bless yourself with this fragrance. Any age, any season, anywhere! And be loved...

I live in Oxford where unfortunately, you cannot get Les Exclusifs de Chanel - so when I was in London in Oxford street last week with my boyfriend we went to Selfridges and I tried every single one of them and completely fell in love with Gardenia-it's a Summer's day-fresh and beautiful captured in a bottle-I am looking forward to my birthday next year when hopefully my lovely boyfriend will buy me a some!

Bab

I used to have Jungle Gardenia and Hawaiian Gardenia and so when Chanel's became available, my hubby bought it for me.
It is lovely. It is green and sharp - a bit too strong/sharp. I prefer the creamy smooth, warm gardenia to this one. Don't get me wrong, it is a gorgeous perfume.

Gwendolyn

Gardenia is a lovely feminine scent. It is not what I usually wear (too sweet for my taste), but I am thinking of purchasing it anyway because... I keep thinking about it since I have tried it! Moreover, my husband loved it and it does not happen often...

Gardenia by Chanel, is certainly a lovely, well-composed white floral, however for such a high price tag I can think of many fragrances that smell just like it but for cheaper.

While pretty, refreshing, delicate and luscious, I can't say that this fragrance is purely gardenia, even though the note is certainly present. The tuberose and jasmine tend to counteract with the gardenia making the scent more of a white floral rather than a soliflore.

Apparently Coco Chanel wanted this fragrance to be created to represent the closest thing to her favourite flower, the Camellia, which unfortunately doesn't have a scent, so Gardenia was supposedly the next best thing.

It has a somewhat dewy feel, that is highlighted more in the heart where the white florals take on a more green approach. Chanel Gardenia isn't as creamy as some gardenia based fragrances I've tried, however I'm glad that it isn't as predictable.

In the drydown I get a lot of white musk and a subtle hint of orange blossom. This particular scent likes to cling to your skin and clothes for hours, lasting well into the next day.

Personally, as much as I enjoy white florals, I find them too innocent and feminine most days. I am a 'girly girl' don't get me wrong, but I tend to wear perfumes that have a little bit of a bite to them. Chanel Gardenia just feels too refined for my tastes, like a lady sipping on a chai latte with a string of pearls about her neck.

Like all the fragrances in the Les Exclusifs line, the lasting power is amazing, as is the sillage. I honestly prefer Kai for a more tropical gardenia scent and Annick Goutal's Gardenia Passion for a rich gardenia and tuberose blend, however I haven't written off Chanel's Gardenia altogether. For those white floral fanatics that seek something softer than your average powerhouse floral, look no further. If you can work your way around the expensive price tag, by all means, Chanel Gardenia is a lovely choice.

Now I'm going on memory. At the time (20 years ago) I found it too floral, too strong and though I tried wearing this scent several times,I remember being driven to distraction (and not in a good way) by the smell. I wonder if I would feel the same now.

I never smell a gardenia, but I know how it look. Chanel Gardenia is the best intrepetation of gardenia flower. White, pure and elegance with sophistication and classy. This is the best perfume to accompany you when you wear a white dress/blouse with matching accessories. it bring you the clean, elegance feeling.
Usually, I dont like white flowers especially jasmine. However, Chanel managed to blend it wisely and become very good when mixed with other flowers. I can accept the existance of jasmine inside this Gardenia.
Gardenia is soft, green and fresh. A little soapy, but without being cheap. Clean without smell like detergent, fresh without smelling watery, green without smell like freshly cut grass. despite it was created in 1925, it is timeless, i love it and I am just 26 years old... The best white dress perfume in my opinion. I have the 35ml edt in my closet (limited edition)..

Chanel GARDENIA edt is a big white floral, but it is also, to my nose, very sharp and green. I say this especially since my primary experience with gardenia has been through MARC JACOBS, which I find much smoother and creamier than its Chanel predecessor.

I know that this may incite ire--perhaps even a riot--but I find the sharpness of GARDENIA to be on a par with some of the sharpest white florals around: yes, CABOTINE, FLEUR DE ROCAILLE, and FIORI DI CAPRI all leap immediately to mind. I am consoled somewhat by the news that gardenia is always "synthetic" (at least according to the Fragrantica notes, above), and so maybe my nose's unspeakable irreverence toward Chanel in this case actually has some basis in chemical fact.

Chanel GARDENIA edt is certainly wearable, when sparingly applied, but I'll continue to reach for MARC JACOBS for my big white gardenia floral fix...

I love the scent it is such a great spring/summer floral fragrance...but there is a draw back and maybe it's just me...but it lasts about an hour on me then I just barely get a wiff of it if I hold my wrist to my nose. I think I need EDP not EDT...but love it!!!

I'm a big Chanel and florals fan and finally got my hands on this. Wow it is lovely - reminds me of a warm, comforting summer day from my childhood - even though I don't have the original composition there is a lovely vintage note here. It is kind of how I wanted Beyond Paradise to smell - they are similar but this beauty doesn't have the bitter, cloying notes of BP. If you like florals you really should try this one. The only slight drawback is the staying power - I do need to spray alot but this is often the case with my skin.

Yesterday I was testing some of fragrances from Les Exclusifs de Chanel and I fell in love with Gardenia. It is luminous and sensuous, very elegant feminine fragrance. Although it is very flowery, it has some kind of edible scent of dried fruits in sugar on my skin which makes it unbelievably addictable!I couldn't get my nose off my wrist, amazing fragrance!

Chanel Gardenia is a very true, wonderful gardenia...one of the best, in my opinion. If you like gardenia, you will love it. And it has great staying power.

This perfume is beautiful, very very feminine flower scent, very Chanel-like...
