About the Author

Wynn Kapit, the designer and illustrator of this book, has had careers in law, graphic and advertising design, painting, and teaching.

In 1955, he graduated from law school, with honors, from the University of Miami and was admitted to the Florida Bar. He practiced law both before and after military service. Four years later, he decided to pursue a childhood ambition and enrolled at what is now the Art Center College in Los Angeles, where he studied graphic design. Afterwards, he worked in the New York advertising world for six years as a designer and art director. He "dropped out" in the late 1960s, returned to California, and began painting. His numerous exhibitions included a one-man show at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1968. He returned to school and received a master's degree in painting from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972.

Kapit was teaching figure drawing in Adult Ed in San Francisco in 1975 when he decided he needed to learn more about bones and muscles. He enrolled in Dr. Elson's anatomy class at San Francisco City College. While he was a student, he created the word-and-illustration coloring format that seemed to be a remarkably effective way of learning the subject. He showed some layouts to Dr. Elson and indicated his intention to do a coloring book on bones and muscles for artists. Immediately recognizing the potential of this method, Dr. Elson encouraged Kapit to do a "complete" coloring book on anatomy and offered to collaborate on the project. The first edition of The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in 1977, and its immediate success inspired the development of a completely new field of publishing: educational coloring books.

Kapit went on to create The Physiology Coloring Book with the assistance of two professors who were teaching at Berkeley: Dr. Robert I. Macey and Dr. Esmail Meisami. That book was published in 1987 and has gone through two editions. In the early 1990s, Kapit wrote and designed The Geography Coloring Book, now in its second edition.

Lawrence M. Elson, PhD, planned the content and organization, provided sketches, and wrote the text for the book. This is his seventh text, having authored It's Your Body and The Zoology Coloring Book and co-authored The Human Brain Coloring Book and The Microbiology Coloring Book. He received his BA in zoology and pre-med at the University of California at Berkeley and continued there to receive his PhD in human anatomy. Dr. Elson was assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, participated in the development of the Physician's Assistant Program, lectured and taught dissection anatomy at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, and taught general anatomy, from protozoons to humans, at City College of San Francisco.

In his younger days, Dr. Elson trained to become a naval aviator and went on to fly dive-bombers off aircraft carriers in the Western Pacific. While attending college and graduate school, he remained in the Naval Air Reserve and flew antisubmarine patrol planes and helicopters. His last position in his 20-year Navy career was as commanding officer of a reserve antisubmarine helicopter squadron.

Dr. Elson is a consultant to insurance companies and personal injury and medical malpractice attorneys on causation-of-injury/death issues, a practice that has taken him throughout the United States and Canada. He has testified in hundreds of personal injury trials and arbitrations. His research interests are focused on the anatomic bases of myofascial pain arising from low velocity accidents.

Useful book with a lot of attention given to detail
I purchased this book to help me memorize the muscles for my muscle practical exam. I was very impressed when I started looking through the pages. The authors of this book have really paid attention to the details. Here are the PROS and CONS of this book to help give you a better idea of what to expect:PROS:- This book contains all of the muscles that I needed to study for my muscle practical exam. This is important because I also purchased another anatomy coloring book at the same time that I purchased this one, and that book was missing some of the muscles.- This book not only gives you the muscles to color, but it also helps you pay attention to the spelling of each muscle because it gives you the option to color the letters. Spelling is very important in the practical exams because we would lose points for spelling something incorrectly.- The illustrations are shaded with hatching lines and dots, and are shaded in a way that makes it easier to visualize the 3-dimensional structures that these drawings are meant to represent.- This book shows both deep and superficial muscles, and it shows them from different angles.- This book gives you visual examples of the muscles in action such as when a person is walking, lifting weights, riding a horse, etc. It also gives examples of how tight muscles affect flexibility and posture. I think it's amazing that the authors have chosen to include these examples because it makes it easier to memorize and understand the muscles, since it provides context.- Throughout the chapter, there are review pages that show you images of the muscles from different angles and ask you to write out their names. This is great because it allows you to test yourself on what you have learned.CONS- There is only one CON that I think this book has, but it's nothing major. My only criticism of this book is that the longer descriptions of the different anatomy terms are worded in a confusing way. They're basic terms that would be easy to understand if I read about them in an anatomy textbook, but I find that I have to read the descriptions more than once when I'm reading about them in this book. I don't consider this problematic though, because I already have my anatomy textbook to study from. The reason that most people buy anatomy coloring books isn't to read about anatomy, but instead to color the anatomy in order to memorize the material better. I think this book does an excellent job as an anatomy coloring book.I have attached some images of pages from this book that will help you get a better idea of what this book offers. I also included an image comparing a page from this book to a page from another anatomy coloring book that I purchased. The reason I'm including this image is because I read some reviews saying that the shading makes the illustrations look confusing, but I have to disagree with that. I think the shading is done nicely and I like that it's being used to enhance the 3-dimensional aspects of the anatomical parts that are being represented. It is much easier to understand because it doesn't look flat. In contrast, the other coloring book has cleaner lines because it doesn't have much hatching, but I think that's a drawback, since it makes the illustrations harder to understand. It might look fine aesthetically, but it's not very good as a learning tool, which is what this type of book is supposed to be. I think it's better when the illustrations contain thin hatching lines to represent the direction of the muscle fibers, while thicker lines are used to separate the muscles from one another. This is why I like the shading in this book, and I think it makes the illustrations clearer, instead of harder to understand. If you're going to buy an anatomy coloring book, I think this is a very good one to get. You can also take a look at the images that I have attached to see if this book is right for you.

My favorite book for learning histology as a histology tech. It’s just enough information and coloring actually helps retain the information.
  • Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024
The photos do not look like the typical coloring book drawings with plenty of spaces to color. The drawings are serious drawings of anatomy. Very informative and will help people remember what is what and where. At the beginning of the book are instructions for coloring, such as what minimum colors of colored pencils one should use; please don't ignore those instructions. Not everything in a drawing is colored on each page. I highly recommend this for an anatomy student or anyone interested in learning anatomy a fun way.

El producto viene mejor de lo esperado.
En la descripción parece que fuera un simple libro con 15-30 páginas, pero oh sorpresa trae bastante más y con explicación de lo que estás apunto de agregar color. Recomendable para aprender y relajarte 👍🏼

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the book

I think this is the best way of learning anatomy!
The pictures are really accurate and well-explained. I love it.

Honestly, the only disappointment about it is how the female reproductive system is reported, all in comparison to the male reproductive system (as if the female reproductive system was only to give birth and pleasure to men. Even if, biologically speaking, the "default sex" could be female-like, as it is primarily formed in the fetus).
The description is clearly sexist and biased, shame on the writers. I know it is just a page of the book, but let's get real that this is offensive and just shouldn't be acceptable anymore.

Besides that, it's a really fun and beautiful book!

This colouring book was purchased to help with my degree level studies. I've found this to be a massive help in learning human anatomy with little effort being put into learning other that colouring the diagrams in. There is enough detail to cover everything needed for my learning needs for university. As a 'hands on' learner this has been ideal and is great for that type of learner.

The book is well set out and is of good quality which adds to the feel of the item. To follow the colour scheme advised for the diagrams you will need a fairly extensive set of colouring pens/pencils. I've recommended to other students who have also found this to be really beneficial.

Overall, a good quality item, nicely presented and has really helped with my learning.
