5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the 3DS family
Verified PurchaseFirst off, I wasn't planning to get a New 3DS, as I have an original 3DS and a 3DS XL; it seemed unnecessary and unneeded. But I fell in love with the idea of interchangeable faceplates. Plus, the N3DS XL systems are larger than the original 3DS XLs, and I have small hands and delicate wrists. So I knew that one would be brutal for me to use.
Let me speak first about the overall design of the N3DS. Wowza! The smooth edges are wonderful when compared to the O3DS. The system (and included faceplates) have a lovely matte finish and feel. That may become an issue for dirt and stains, but I keep my systems in almost pristine condition, so I don't see that being a real problem.
Others have said that the weight is similar to the weight of the 3DS XL, and that is not true. It is substantially lighter than the XL, but maybe slightly heavier than the original 3DS.
Another improvement is that the system now has a removable battery, under the back cover. Another improvement is the serial number is concealed under the cover. Every DS I have ever had had issues with the plastic over the number peeling off and eventually the number rubbed off. That seems to be an issue of the past. Finally!
I've only played Animal Crossing: New Leaf thus far (big surprise considering I got HHD bundle...), but it does seem to load faster and the screen is really sharp for graphics.
Next up: the 3D. I've never used the 3D, because I have a really hard time viewing 3D because of my vision, but I will say this: the 3D is VASTLY improved on the N3DS. The days of blurred graphics if you move your head or system is gone.
I'm not going to say the lack of a charger is a con, exactly, because I've known Nintendo isn't including them with their systems for awhile now. Plus, I have a regular 3DS and an XL, so I have plenty of chargers to go around. But if someone doesn't have any systems in this family, I can see why they would be peeved.
Pros:
- smaller size for those who don't want to walk around with a brick, and more comfortable for those with small hands.
- matte finish on the system, which looks and feels nicer than the high gloss finish of pretty much every other system out there, including Nintendo systems.
- interchangeable faceplates so you can really personalize your system
- improved 3D
- faster load times and slightly better graphics/resolution
Cons:
- AC adapter not included
- super small stylus, so if you don't already have a spare stylus to use, I would invest in one

5.0 out of 5 stars For those wanting a New 3DS that isn't an XL
Verified PurchaseFirst, to be 100% clear, this is a New 3DS. Not a New 3DS XL. At this point you should not buy this for any other reason than specifically to get a non-XL model. Now, for those of us without huge basketball star hands, the smaller and lighter non-XL is far more comfortable to use for any length of time. Do bear in mind that it has a slightly smaller battery -- but then it also has a smaller screen (or, more accurately, a smaller backlight to cover that screen) so uses a bit less power. So it probably has ever so slightly worse battery life than the XL but likely not by leaps and bounds. I believe mine came with the TN panel screen type as it appears to have much nicer colors and overall image clarity than the system I had before with a super wide viewing angle in 2D mode (though it's about the color quality, not the viewing angle with a TN panel these days) and given that most of these are from just a few runs there may be a rather decent chance of getting a TN panel (but no guarantees, just one of those nice things if you get it.)
As with the Japanese model N3DS you have the changeable faceplates. It's the same standard size as the Japanese models, so any of those will do. I bought this to replace a broken Japanese model, so I just swapped the plates from that to this and it looks much better than the plates that came with it. The plates are the only part with the faces and patterns, so if you swap them out it no longer looks so silly. The actual color of the system itself is a sort of slightly off-white and as someone who normally hates white systems I have to admit that I think it actually looks really good. It's also a matte finish, not the glossy finish of the American XL (oooh, SHINY) so it doesn't gather fingerprints like insane, looks overall nicer (shiny isn't always good,) and is quite considerably easier to hold onto without it actually slipping through your hand like the XL can sometimes do. If you're willing to swap out face plates this system actually looks amazing IMO. With faceplates... Well, a bit silly, but good for a kid maybe. Unless they hate it. (Kids are very polar after all.) Now, interestingly enough, Amazon carries blank faceplates where one can actually doodle on it or something and I suppose a label could be printed and stuck on these (take the faceplate off, stick the label on, and trim around the edges, then put the faceplate back on.) So don't be too concerned about the looks of the stock faceplates.
BTW, I'm fairly certain these have actually been discontinued for a while now. Stock will eventually run out completely, but in the meantime, I don't think any will ever ship with a high firmware (all less than 11.0 I think.) Probably all from now on are going to be the 9.8 that mine shipped with as I doubt they made any past that point. (Presuming the seller doesn't actually open it up, do the initial setup, and then update it or something. But then it wouldn't be "new" anymore once it's opened and used and you could send it back.) The low supply is probably the main reason for the price slowly rising to so much more than the usual XL model. However, if you want an American region N3DS that isn't an XL, this is one of the best options despite the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Purchase!
Verified PurchaseWell, not only is this 3ds utterly ADORABLE, it is also exactly as a 3ds should be with all of the benefits of Nintendo's new 3D technology! I would like to mention that I have owned 2 DS Lites and a 3DS, but I'm also familiar with the 2DS. I bought this 3DS as a birthday present for myself after dealing with a 3DS with a jagged line of dead pixels across the top screen for several years. I've had it for almost 3 months now and I LOVE IT!
The DS comes with two cover plates (One with a colorful house filled with furniture and cute animals and the other with Isabella's happy little face) that are easy to swap out (you click them into place and then secure them with tiny screws) and fit in seamlessly with the frame of the DS itself. This 3DS is made of a more lightweight plastic than previous models, so it seems more durable than other DS's I've had in the past. While the frame of the DS is an odd off-white (semi light gray) color, this isn't a big deal, because the DS should have a coverplate on it at all times (of which more and more designs should become available over time) as the DS is indented so the coverplates may, as previously stated, fit into the frame of the DS seamlessly.
As far as content goes, this bundle comes complete with the download code for the Animal Crossing Happy Homes Designer game from the Nintendo DS store. The game is not yet installed on the device (which shouldn't be an issue so long as you have access to the internet). This DS, as it is considered a NEW 3DS, is equipped with an amiibo compatible screen. This means that you'll be able to use amibo figures and cards, without an external amiibo reader, by just placing them on the bottom screen! Additionally, the new 3DSs have improved 3D technology meaning that the 3D feature is more usable than ever before! As I said earlier, I've owned a 3DS in the past, but I NEVER used 3D on that device because it was so meh and impractical (aka it was only 3D if your head was at the exact right angle and distance from the device). However, with this ds, I find myself using 3D much more often (typically with Zelda games).
Before purchasing this bundle, I did about 2 years worth of research. Lemme tell you, I wasn't disappointed.
