- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2020About a year ago, we got a mission style futon to replace our 20-year-old worn-out sofa. Our house is a Craftsman style bungalow, so the mission style futon fits nicely. However, the mattress that came with the futon was 4" thin and was never really comfortable. In a short amount of time, you could feel the bars of the futon when sitting, so I began searching for an improved replacement. Of those I found as possibilities, I read all the reviews and finally decided on this mattress.
This mattress had mostly good/great reviews, but there were some negative and scary reviews: fabric tears, tufting plastic breaking, mattress splitting down the center, bad smells (mildew and chemical), and the worst (but in only a very few reviews): bed bugs. I read every single review, weighed pros and cons, talked it over with my husband, and we decided to give it a shot.
It arrived very quickly. We decided to open it on our front porch in case of strong smell or bed bugs. The box was sealed with glue, and it was difficult to break into (we didn't want to use any sharp implements for fear of stabbing/slicing the mattress). Once we won our fight with the box, the rolled-up mattress was wrapped in a sheet of plastic, and then the mattress itself was vacuumed sealed inside more plastic.
We unrolled the mattress and I was surprised at how easily it unrolled. We then liberated it from the vacuum seal (still on our porch). It, again surprisingly, immediately fluffed up. The smell, which was a common new textile smell, was so minimal, my husband didn't even smell it until he buried his face into it. I have a very keen sense of smell, and while I did smell it (without burying my face), it was exceptionally mild. (I'm wondering if some colors have a more intense smell than others.) We then unzipped the one end of the fabric cover and searched all the folds, nooks, and crannies and found no sign of any unwelcome guests. We then closely scrutinized the piping all around, all of the tufted areas, and the zipper seam (inside and out) and there was still no sign of unwanted hitchhikers.
We were going to let it air out on the porch, but the smell was so minimal, we decided to go ahead and put it in place.
It is heavy, but not horrible. It's more awkward than anything. But my husband and I easily carried it inside and put it in place. Bending/folding it into the seated position was also a little awkward, but again, not bad.
Then we sat on it. I'm still sitting on it. Not only is it a major improvement in comfort, its stability makes it easier to sit down and then get up from the former thin, flimsy mattress. As far as sleeping, I haven't opened the futon to the bed position, but just stretching out across the seated position, it's very nice. It gives me great lumbar support, and I have a bad back. Laying on my side is also comfortable.
For the money, I think it's a great buy.
If anything significant changes after we've had this for awhile, I will update this review. I may even update it if nothing changes. I hope our review helps others in making their choice.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2015Back in 2010 my friend and I moved into our first apartment together, and deceided we'd each buy beds after we got tired of sleeping on the floor. After realizing that buying a conventional bed was unusually expensive, we began looking into alternative, budget-friendly options and stumbled upon this. I bought this exact DHP mattress and used it with a steel platform bed-frame. Its been 5 years later and this mattress is still very comfortable and held up well. It is very thick and heavy, and comes in vacuum-sealed plastic, tightly rolled up in a disposable duffle bag. Once you free it from the plastic, it immediantly begins "inhaling" air and puffing up to full-size, as well as the coil-springs expanding. It did have a musty smell at first but that went away after the first few days.
The only downside is that because its so big, getting it back into its packaging is impossible if you want to return it. UPS won't take it unless it is in an actual box. You probably won't want to return it though, as it is a very nice and comfortable mattress.
Highly recommended. If you're looking for an inexpensive, quality bed option, then this full-size mattress along with a full-size steel platform bed frame, should cost no more than $250.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 20136/23/13 Update: I didn't like that the futon cover couldn't be removed from this mattress - how am I supposed to give it a good cleaning?? Vacuuming isn't enough. So I ordered a mattress cover from Amazon and also ordered a very nice futon cover for this mattress on Overstock.com for $40 and it looks and fits great. I ordered the 8" chocolate cover and it's very similar to the cover that comes attached to the mattress. Look for Ultima Full-size Microfiber Soft Suede Futon Cover on Overstock. I washed the cover and dried it on low and it was a little too saggy for my taste. The next time I washed it I dried on high and it now fits perfectly! Now I'm able to easily keep my futon fresh and clean.
2/10/13 update: I ordered a replacement mattress and the new mattress smelled.... NEW! It did not smell old, musty, and gross like the first mattress that I received, which was a a huge relief for me. It definitely has a smell, but its tolerable and just smells like new fabric or material that hasn't been washed yet. If, for any reason, you get a mattress that smells funky, I highly suggest you contact amazon because you likely received a mattress that was not manufactured properly or got wet somehow prior to being vacuum sealed by DHP. I'm sure my first mattress was a health hazard with that horrendous smell and I feel so foolish for hanging on to it as long as I did.
Now that I have a normal smelling mattress I can finally say that I really like this on my futon. It's really comfy to sit on and looks great. My only complaint now is that I have a solid wood futon frame is it can be a bit cumbersome to get the mattress from a bed to sofa position.
Review of first mattress that I received:
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. I also received a very smelly mattress and was extremely disappointed. The mattess itself is very comfortable and looks good, but my mattress stunk to high heaven. I've had it for three weeks and have tried everything I could think of to get rid of the smell with no luck at all. To me, the smell is not a chemical one, but a moldy/mildew/old smell. I finally contacted Amazon because I just could not take the smell anymore and they were able to work something out with me. They were actually very helpful and professional so they get TEN stars for being so awesome.
I initially contacted DHP, but was informed that the mattresses are shipped to Amazon as soon as they are manufactured - no idea how true that is. The DHP rep also informed me that any smell from the mattress should go away within 24 - 48 hours so if it's still there there, there's def something wrong with it. Perhaps we got old stock. My mattress did have a date on it and, if I remember correctly, it was manufactured some time in 2011...maybe July, but I threw out the packaging the day I opened it. The mattress was sealed and airtight so I didnt think anything of the date. A few days after my 1/14/13 order, the chocolate mattresses taht were sold and shipped by Amazon went out of stock. I'm assuming they got new stock in as of 2/6/13 as the mattress is now available again to be sold and shipped by Amazon.
Just a note to anyone who reads this - I am not being dramatic about the smell...It stunk up the whole room even with windows open and air purifier on. I had decorative pillows on the mattress (futon) and the material that was in contact with the mattress cover started to have the same stench. In my idiotic attempt to get used to the smell, I parked myself on my futon to watch a movie and after about an hour and a half my clothes and skin that had been touching the mattress also smelled of mildew...so gross. I should have contacted Amazon after a week of that smell, but kept hoping that it would go away because I really did like the mattress aside from the smell. There's also no way to remove the mattress cover because the decorative buttons are stitched to the mattress. There's a zipper, but it's probably just so the manufaturer can get the cover on the mattress before tacking it down to the mattress.
I do believe that I got a dud mattress so decided to order a replacement and am crossing my fingers that the new one is funk free. Ordinarily I would give this no stars (1 star), but the fact that I am ordering a replacement reflects the fact that I did LIKE the mattress, but somehow the one I got was defective or moldy...no idea. I'm willing to try again because the price is right and prime shipping is offered all the way to Hawaii. I'll be sure to update my review once I receive the replacement. I'm really hoping that I don't have the same problem.

Sturdy, and comfortable. Only problem is I ordered full when I should have ordered double. It is a few inches bigger than the futon I have

5.0 out of 5 stars Super nice, comfy, and sturdy
I've bought this about 2 years ago, and it was the best choice. Very sturdy, nice wood colour, and comfy. I've bought it with the thicker mattress, it is harder to put it upright because it's heavier, but I have the best sleep on it, the firmness is just perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get if futon is more often a couch
I was a bit scared of the previous reviews, but I needed a new futon mattress that would withstand the occasional protests from my aging cats. I went with the encased coils because the previous mattress was too much like an overstuffed pillow and I wanted something of better quality. It's been in the upright position for about a week now, and it's fantastic. It was a bit of a struggle to get upright - like, you might want to have 2 people instead of trying to do it yourself like I did - but it's very comfortable as a couch. I won't be using it in the bed position very often so I can't say what that's like right now, but it feels very much like it would be like a normal bed mattress. It came all rolled up in a large box and inflated on the frame.
I wouldn't recommend this for someone who raises and lowers their futon daily. The overstuffed pillow would have greater flexibility in that department. For those of us who use a futon like a couch more often, this would be great.

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality well constructed and comfy
Style Name: MattressColor: BlackVerified PurchaseI am extremely happy with the quality of this futon. We purchased it for our rv. It is so comfortable and we actually had great sleeps while camping. We fold it up and use it as a couch during the day.
The price is also excellent. I would definitely purchase again, we love it!
