‘Where have you been all our lives, Mindy?’ Glamour
Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: comedienne, actress, obedient child of immigrant professionals and, now, writer. With a blend of witty confessions and unscientific observations, Mindy writes about everything from being a timid young chubster afraid of her own bike to living the Hollywood life, dating, friendships and planning her own funeral – all executed with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2014Mindy Kaling is my idol. In her early 30's, Mindy already has 10 seasons of the office under her belt as well as a degree from Dartmouth and an awesome self titled TV show moving into its third season. This collection of anecdotes about her childhood and trying to make it in New York is not only wonderfully written but very inspiring. Mindy grew up in Massachusetts and loved watching SNL and comedy series on TV while her friends were into boys and shopping at the mall. It's really inspiring to know that someone with such talent can create female centric comedy in the same league as her peers, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. If you're a fan of Mindy's, you probably already own this book. If you're stumbling across this - BUY IT. She's fun, quirky, modest and entertaining. I definitely want to hang out with her.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2014Mindy has a lovely conversational way about her writing. You feel like you're sitting down for a chat with a good friend about how her life has been going over the last few years since you last saw each other. Even if you're not a fan of Kaling, she incorporates the stories of her life into tips for working in the business, her views on how the business works and she is funny enough that you can approach this as a humour book and enjoy it on the basis of that.
Nothing is too in your face, but the guidelines are there from talking about writing her first critically acclaimed show with her flatmate Brenda, to 'how to behave with Greg Daniels' all the way to being a guest writer on SNL and failing miserably. And there's a lovely anecdote about how nice Amy Poehler is, and any book containing an anecdote is thus considered worthy. Ha.
It doesn't quite have the edge on humour that Tina Fey's Bossypants has, but it's warm, friendly and a light-hearted amusing read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 March 2015How this book came to be a bestseller is beyond me. Let me explain.
Mindy's biography or rather a collection of essays is bearable and sometimes funny at best, and an endless rant about completely unrelated things - often without a point, at worst. For someone who doesn't normally read books and doesn't expect much in terms of getting a different but valuable new outlook on life, this might be an easy and enjoyable read. For a 12-year old, this book might be a fabulous choice also.
I feel it needs to be said that I adore Mindy, love her show, find her extremely inspirational. Initially, it comes as a shocker that I fell asleep twice while reading this. However, it makes sense. Whilst in a TV show we might look for a break from our hard lives and pressing problems just to indulge in a light (as opposed to deep) story where the characters dress impeccably, say lots of jokes, go through awkward scenes and show us that we're all just humans and it's okay not to be perfect; in a book I personally expect to learn something, get inspired, and see a well thought out analysis or reflection of the experiences, events and thoughts the author has encountered in his or her life, rather than mere descriptions of stories.
For example when Mindy says she hates riding the bike because they scratch against her legs or whatever in I Am Not an Athlete, Part I:Bikes - I couldn't help but think, and this is relevant how? It's a cute little rant, sure, inevitably showing us that the big success that is Mindy is just as normal and human as anyone else, but there was no need for a whole book to be written in this style. Mindy tells a lot of stories in this book, and more often than not they don't reach much of a conclusion in the sense that you might be wondering half-way through ''Is this going somewhere?''.(The answer would be - no. Only Mindy's light heartedness and the fact that her childhood and early adolescence were as difficult as anyone else's.)
In my opinion, this books shows perfectly why and how Mindy is so successful as a comedy writer - she's got a quick mind, a sense of humour, she isn't afraid to make fun of herself or comment on the world she sees around her with confidence (though often without being able to convince the reader, due to the lack of an argument). ''I like this, I don't like that, I think people should wear this, I hate navy.'' There's a lot of statements like this in her book, often presented without much of an explanation which is perfectly fine and good, but not exactly something that will provoke a mind-blowing revelation. Mindy, please keep using your talents to write scripts, produce great tweets and snaps; I also think you'd be great at creating viral content like those gif-filled articles on buzzfeed. But God, no more of this.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2015I thought about giving it 4 stars because as great as it was it didn't change my life but then I thought what would Mindy say, she'd be like "if you have no issues with it give it 5 stars and help a sister out" so I did
It made me laugh out loud, gave me an insight to The Office and was like talking to a gal pals about all the things gal pals like to discuss. And if we're honest isn't the only reason to read a book because you have no one to chat sh*t with????
Buy it, read it, and think well it didn't change me life but it gave me some good laughs and wasn't a depressing book mainly about Salmon (a mistake I made with Salmon fishing in the Yemen, which I rate no stars at all if you were wondering)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2016Mindy Kaling is such a talented writer; this can be seen through her hit show, The Office, and now through this book. What made this book so appealing to me is that Mindy is brutally honest about her life and life in general. She talks about the struggles that she had to go through and shows that it was not easy for her to get to where she is now. This is a book where she hits the right balance of hysterically funny whilst also conveying more serious and important messages to young girls and budding writers. My favourite thing however is that she totally conveys that psycho eccentric side that all women have and she's not afraid to do so. A really quick and engaging read that I would thoroughly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Mindy comes across as a delightful combination of superficial, intelligent, generous of spirit, kinda mean and just hilarious. I'd like her to be my friend!
