Product Description
Coconut is one of the world's most nourishing superfoods. This creamy taste of the tropics is great for sautéing and baking, enhancing your favorite recipes, and body care. Nutiva virgin coconut oil is cold-pressed and never refined, deodorized or bleached! Savor its rich aroma and its smooth and sweet flavor. It's ideal as a medium-heat cooking oil, a nutritious substitute in baking and even "better than butter" on bread, vegetables or popcorn. A pinch of salt will reduce the coconut flavor in savory recipes. You can even use the luscious, soothing oil on your skin and hair. Use coconut oil as a natural skin moisturizer, eye make-up remover, or deep conditioning hair treatment. Combine coconut oil with coconut sugar and essential oil for an exfoliating, refreshing body scrub.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2016"Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, 15 oz." is awesome and such a deal via the Prime Pantry. It is virgin, unrefined, cold-pressed, and organic! And I'm very happy to support a local Bay Area company, as Nutiva is based in Richmond, CA. There is a disclaimer on the jar about brown specks (they are naturally occuring since coconut has brown skin), but my jar was totally spotless and pure. Also, I love that the jar is totally opaque, to ensure the integrity of the oil.
I use the coconut oil as a hair mask/treatment before bleaching my hair. You would think that oil might interfere with the effectiveness of the bleach, but it really facilitates the bleaching process and I actually think that it allows the bleach to process slightly faster. Also, it is so much easier to apply bleach to a coconut oil-slicked mane than it is to apply to dry hair!! It makes the application much more even. And most importantly, it protects the hair and the scalp really well!
How to use this coconut oil as a hair mask/treatment:
1. Scooping/Liquifying: Pure coconut oil is solid and has a waxy texture (like pure shea butter) at room temperature. It takes a little bit of effort to scoop out with a spoon, but it's a lot easier than scooping ice cream straight out of the freezer! I scoop into a small glass bowl, and then liquify by aiming a clothes steamer at it until it all melts. I steam with one hand, and mix with the spoon in the other. A blowdryer works too, but I feel that the steam is somehow more gentle.
2. Applying: I then pour/scoop the oil onto my head/hair. Just keep adding until your hair is completely saturated, put up your hair, and then put a hair towel on your shoulders to catch the drips.
3. Soaking: Leave it on for about an hour. Some people say 3 hours or even overnight! I do it for about 40 minutes to an hour because I'm impatient.
4. Wash off or Bleach: If bleaching, you might want to reapply some oil to parts that have soaked up all the oil and feel less-slick. If the coconut oil has hardened in some places (it's been chilly and rainy lately, so some stands got totally hard as if covered in hairspray), just take a blowdryer and blast it on low heat to warm things up and liquify the coconut oil again. It'll smell a little undesireable, but as long as it's low heat, it's fine. Anyway, once your hair is all slick again, just add the bleach cream mixture into your hair, right on top of the coconut oil. Process as normal and wash out. Voila!
I have done the hair mask/treatment 3 times and have used about 2/3 of the jar. I have long, thick, straight hair that goes about 6" past my shoulders (hits the middle of my bra). I think I will get a total of 4.5 uses out of this 15 oz jar, and will happily repurchase when the jar empties!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2016This oil is almost solid at room temperature, but melts the moment it touches your skin. The virgin oil has a faint, pleasant coconut aroma and flavor. The refined oil has no odor.
USES
I use the refined oil for cooking, except when making a Thai dish where the virgin coconut flavor will be appropriate. I have fried fish in both, and they were delicious. It's non-toxic, and consumed in moderation is also healthy.
I use coconut oil as a base for DIY skin lotions (adding almond oil, aloe vera, vitamins C and E, hyaluronic acid, a small amount of alcohol, tea tree oil, lavendar oil and lemon grass oil). It's a bit greasy to apply straight.
Coconut oil is anti-fungal. I am on meds that make my mouth always dry, so I use a heaping teaspoon of coconut oil to swish out my mouth and moisturize it AFTER brushing my teeth. I swish for five minutes. It helps prevent thrush and bacteria from taking over during the night. A friend of mine says to add teatree oil and apply it to your feet, to help keep calluses soft and prevent athlete's foot. (Pure teatree oil gets rid of nail fungus.)
I am a big fan of Nutiva, as well as Dr. Bronner's.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2016I actually like Trader Joe's organic virgin coconut oil better. Nutiva's is nice and smooth but for some reason I didn't like the taste as much as TJ's. To each their own. Nutiva is a wonderful brand and I purchase other health items from this awesome manufacturer. I just wouldn't buy this one product again.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2016There are so many coconut oil products out there, that it is overwhelming to choose. I recently adopted a Paleo lifestyle and I use coconut for cooking, cleaning and beauty care. The uses are endless and I keep discovering more every time I use it. I do like to keep the cooking products separated from the cleaning and hygiene products. I came across Nutiva when I was looking for Coconut Flour. Coconut oil can also be heated to high temperatures, so I have thrown out all my other oils other than Olive Oil which I only use for salads etc.as it does not have a high cooking temperature point. I was very pleased with Nutiva. It has a mild flavor and and the packaging is a nice size to just leave on my counter by the stove. A little of this goes a long way.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2016I use this product for my skin and hair. It smells great and is very nourishing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2015The coconut oil seems to be of good quality. I purchased the coconut oil with my first & possibly last Amazon Prime Pantry purchase. I also purchased a bottle of Fabreeze Fabric Freshner & multiple other pantry items with my first Amazon Prime Pantry Purchase & even though the Fabreeze was & still remains in a sealed bag, the cap was not tightened on the bottle & all of the liquid spilled out of the sealed bag on to all of the other Amazon Prime Pantry products causing the labels to become soaked with the Febreeze liquid. I guess the sealed bag containing the Febreeze has holes in it. Included in my Amazon Pantry order were four cans of beans & they were loosely packed in the pantry box & damaged from rough handling. The labels on all four cans of beans came off because they were soaked with Febreeze. The pantry box smelled really good though.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2015coconut oil is great
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2016Great coconut oil. Doesn't smell rancid, smells of a lovely coconut scent. The coconut scent is not overwhelming, but faint. I've used this product in my hair as a moisturizer, and it was extremely effective and left my hair smelling wonderful. I tried this as a facial moisturizer, but it's comedogenic, and, of course, it broke my acne-prone skin out. However, as a lip moisturizer, a condiment on toast, used for tooth-pulling, hair/body moisturizer, this product does wonders.
