I suffer from a birth defect of the neck area, traditional pillows are not something that I can use without being subjected to increased pain. Ergonomic pillows are more helpful, but they are extremely yielding, offering little true firm support. Consequently, when I lay my head onto one of those pillows, it depresses and causes my neck to skew downward, which makes my pain much worse.
The Pinzon Basics Micro Bead pillow is awesome in that it offers support, which is firm, but also offers the ability to be adjusted to a more comfortable position for the neck and head due to the Micro Beads. The Micro Beads are very much like a bean bag in that they offer support when someone is sitting on it, but can be adjusted to a more comfortable position if necessary.
I gave it 5 stars because it has improved my sleep and restfulness dramatically. It’s reduced my neck pain caused by sleeping in an awkward position significantly. Frankly, it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for these last 3 years. Now that I have one, and it feels excellent, I am going to buy two more. I’ve found that if there is something I like, I’d best get another in the event that it disappears and can’t be ordered again.

This is the best of the micro bead pillows I have used and the second one of these from Amazon. I say the second one because after a year or so it doesn't seem as "stiff" as originally. I wish there was a "heavy density" one by Pinzon. While I like the buckwheat ones, they are just SO heavy, However, the best ones make a great back support when sleeping on the side.

After sleeping on a curved Tempur-Pedic pillow that I've had for years that is starting to finally break down, I thought I'd try something different. I'm a side sleeper, and when I saw some of the reviews that said that this pillow was comfortable for side sleepers, I decided to give it a try.

I expected it to be firm, but not just outright HARD. Ugh. When I was on my side, my ear pressed into the pillow so tightly that it actually created a small vacuum! I tried punching a little dip into the pillow, but no matter what I did, I just couldn't get comfortable and was even starting to get a headache. This pillow reminded me of those green foam blocks that people use for floral arrangements. You can push in the foam with your thumb, but the foam remains rock hard. That's pretty much what this pillow felt like to me.

After about an hour of being miserable, I finally switched back to my old Tempur-Pedic and haven't used the new one since. I did put it on top of a bench in my bedroom, and my cats seem to love it, so I'll let them keep it. :)

This really is too hard for a side sleeper like me, plus it's rather high so my head is bent up and aches in the morning. The hardness is because it's stuffed so full of microbeads and the casing has no give. Definitely made for back sleepers. I have to rotate sides often to avoid cauliflower ears.

The pillow seems well built, but I wish there was a convenient way I could let some microbeads out. I may just go ahead and risk a "leak event" by opening a seam and letting some of the beads out and resewing. The reference to "leak event" is due to the fact that these are typically styrofoam beads that really hold a crazy static charge such that when they are exposed to air they cling to anything and everything including me. Some equate microbeads to a public menace, but I prefer them over buckwheat husks.

This pillow held up for several years, I finally threw it away when I moved, but I had it for 5+ years. It was very comfortable and held my head and neck perfectly. The support was perfect, not too hard. The beeds made it easy to conform to my body. I will be getting another one soon!

This pillow was to replace a 7 year old microbead pillow that I loved, but, sadly was just a little shopworn. The replacement is NOTHING like my old pillow. The Pinzon Basics is hard as a rock with little or no give at all in the microbead filling. It's a standard size, which is nice, but after just one night, I woke up with a very stiff neck. I did replace my old favorite with a Sobakawa Cloud Pillow I purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond (Only $15 with a $5 off coupon). It is smaller than a standard size pillow, but I did get a great night's sleep, and realized that I only sleep on a small part of the pillow at a time! Unless you are looking for a very firm pillow, I recommend you steer clear of the Pinzon Basics. I can't understand why this would be called "medium density" because I can't imagine there could be anything harder!

This is an interesting pillow. The beads keep the pillow from becoming a permanent, flat, squashed mess after a while. The beads just settle right back into place. That's nice. And it's very cool too.

I'm not sure why people believe this pillow is firm or hard. To me it's anything but. The whole pillow weighs next to nothing and sinks under my heavy head. It feels reasonable though.

I would definitely not use this without the pillow case. I've read that this pillow sometimes leaks beads. So far I have not seen that. The pillow case zips shut which should contain any leakage if that occurs. The pillow does not appear to be washable either which is my main concern. For the cleanliness of the pillow, use the pillow case.

I would recommend to anyone that buys this that they consider a second pillow case. If the user of this pillow happens to be a drooler (raises hand) then you'll find the pillow case stained in short order. And since the pillow case is not waterproof, the non-washable pillow will be too. I would recommend buying a waterproof pillow case to go over or under the one that came with the pillow, such as the Aller-Ease model.
