Product description

Manufacturer's Description

Compact Digital Camera SZ1 - Powerful 10x Optical Zoom LEICA DC Lens in Slim, Compact Body

The DMC-SZ1 features powerful 10x optical zoom LEICA DC lens from 25mm ultra wide-angle that fits in the slim, compact body (35mm camera equivalent: 25-250mm). The new lens system makes the unit’s overall length short to fit in the slim body despite its versatile zoom range from ultra wide to telephoto. The 10x optical zoom increases its power to 20x equivalent with the Intelligent Zoom function. This is an extensive zoom function using digital zoom with minimum deterioration of image quality thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology.

High Quality, High Speed Recording

With DMC-SZ1, there are two options to record spur-of-the-moment scenes – 16.1-megapixel high-resolution photos and HD videos. In still image recording, the Sonic Speed AF helps to catch even the most fleeting photo opportunities. In video recording, the DMC-SZ1 can record HD (1280 x 720) videos in MP4 format. This format has high compatibility with computers. A separate button lets you instantly start recording video without the need of extra settings. The 10x optical zoom is available in video recording.

MEGA O.I.S. Anti-blur Technology

The MEGA O.I.S. compensates for blurring caused by hand-shake. Even slight hand-shake movement is accurately detected by a sampling frequency of 4,000 times per second, and compensated to produce sharp, clear images. The Venus Engine controls the shifting of the blur-stopping lens to further increase the detection accuracy and correction effect of MEGA O.I.S. It works for zoom shots and macro shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake, and lets you shoot in dimly lit rooms or evening illumination without losing the mood.

16.1-Megapixel High-resolution CCD

The DMC-SZ1 features a 16.1-megapixel high-resolution CCD. Combined with the Venus Engine, 16.1-megapixel CCD sensor enables the recording of beautiful photos and high-definition videos with higher quality signal processing.

Creative Modes

The Miniature Effect Mode in which the peripherals are defocused while saturation and contrast is emphasized to make the picture looks like a diorama. The video recorded in this mode is played back in 10x fast-forwarding making it more comical to watch. The Panorama Shot in the Scene Mode makes it possible to shoot horizontal / vertical panoramic images by overlaying consequently shot images. The Auto Retouch function adjusts contrast and brightness to give different impression to the photo with just a press of a button.

Small. Small and light. I can not believe how small and light this camera is. You rather expect a camera with such good spec, and costing about £100, to weigh more but you do get used to it. The Leica lens is lovely and sharp with a very nice wide angle. I am getting great picture results in normal mode. Panorama shots are quite pleasing too. Macro is delivering sharp shots with very good focus. The image stabilisation is amazing. Having had a camera for decades and reckoning myself to have a pretty steady hand and good technique, I tried stabilisation on and off and Mega OIS wins. No contest. It uses more power but there is absolutely no point in making your battery last longer and having blurry photos. Focus in normal mode has had difficulty with low contrast and high zoom shots though I get a better response by choosing multiple focus areas which has a better chance of finding a reliable focus. HD video is lovely. You can have fixed focus that will find a focus point and stick with it or have a focus that will alter to compensate for changing distance between you and subject. Both modes are reliable. I've followed seagulls with full zoom and the SZ1 finds and maintains sharp focus for the duration of the shot. The single speed zoom is smooth and remarkably quiet. HD video stabilisation works well though it is on all the time. Sometimes it's preferable to shoot without it as when you are shooting hand-held the stabilisation will change the framing and you will compensate for the change of frame. The result is that you have no stabilisation but a constantly moving frame but the HD image quality is lovely with naturalistic colour values. The display is large and very good. A grid can be shown to aid composition and steadiness, and all data and setups info is easily accessible. The camera can be set for lower quality photos but I'm shooting at full quality because that's what it does and that's why I bought it. The camera feels solid, substantial and well made and I am very happy with it.

This is an excellent camera and great value for money. I've been taking photos for years and started with film cameras in the 1960s. And they were good cameras - Rolleiflexes, Leicas and Olympus OMs. In recent years I've used a number of these tiny Panasonic cameras and this is the best yet. The Leica lens is a dream - razor sharp right to the edges. And the colours are gorgeous - beautiful saturated colours.

To get the best results you must engage with the camera. This is easy to do as all the info required is available from the menus. For example, I find if I use the IA (Intelligent Auto) setting images come out too light. The bright tones - highlights - burn out. But there's a simple solution! Use the Normal Picture setting instead. Then click the exposure control and darken the image slightly. I normally set the exposure two notches down to -2/3EV and leave it there. The result - a full range of tones with no more burnt out highlights.

Unlike film cameras there's a slight shutter delay as this digital camera focuses. You press the shutter button slightly, pause a moment while the camera locks onto the subject and focusses, then press the shutter fully to take the picture. So these tiny compacts are not so good if you're going to do a lot of action photography where split-second timing is vital. You need a DSLR - or its equivalent - for that. But for normal use the camera produces good results. That having been said if you set the camera to SCN (Scene Mode) and then click on the sports scene mode it'll cope with movement quite well.

If you're going to take a lot of pictures at night and in very dark conditions then it might be better to buy a camera with a wider aperture lens. But think of the expense! But if you going to take pictures in brighter conditions this camera performs well. What I also like about the Lumix DMC-SZ1 is its tiny size. I'm no longer weighed down with a mass of equipment as I was in the old days. I can carry it with me all the time and seize images as and when they appear.

Although beginners can use this as a point-and-shoot camera it's more sophisticated than that. A camera and lens maker with the reputation of Leica would never have teamed up with a firm that made mundane products. This Lumix is refined and intelligent and capable of producing higly quality professional photos. I'm using it, as I have previous models, for virtually all my work.

A couple of tips for taking better pictures. MOVE IN CLOSE TO YOUR SUBJECT! Most people stand too far away. Fill the viewfinder. HOLD THE CAMERA STILL WITH BOTH HANDS. People think they look cool using one hand and pointing the camera vaguely at the subject. But this guarantees the worst results. It's difficult to frame the subject, or hold the camera still so you end up with blurred pictures. So HOLD THE CAMERA STILL WITH BOTH HANDS! This advice is true for all cameras. When I first started taking photos years ago in the days of film I had to learn to hold a camera still in both hands. The result? - sharp photos!

You can judge for yourself how well this camera performs if you look at a slideshow I've put out on YouTube. I went along to Winter Wonderland in London's Hyde Park - a spectacular funfair and festival held over Christmas and New year. As it was winter the light level was low. And I took pictures after dark as well so I was really pushing this camera technically. I was very pleased with the results. The colours are vibrant and even in low light the results are acceptable. If you type my full name - Roger George Clark - into YouTube, plus the name of the video - "Winter Wonderland" - you will find the photos.

Very good reviews on Amazon so whilst at very reasonable price thought I'd go for it. Lovely camera BUT to cut long story short, pictures taken with intelligent auto i.e. on point and shoot setting were overexposed, which completely defeated the object of having it. My ten year sony cybershot took better pics. Had a look at a friend's lumix and did the same so seems to be common thread with lumix but agree this is just a snapshot conclusion. Hence, wanted to return it and that's when problems started. Had to get it collected by Yodel. Set a day, can't set am or pm, and not only did they not come but didn't even leave note to suggest we'd missed them, they just hadn't bothered at all. Amazon would only refund once they receive item back but after stinky emails to yodel and amazon, got my refund before it was returned. Yodel did eventually pick it up but I must question why amazon continue to use yodel who seem to have gained a poor reputation. Not even a contact phone number on yodel website, I got that from amazon! As usual, 10/10 for amazon customer service and reaffirmed my trust in them. For what it's worth, got a canon powershot A4000.....superb, point and click=great photos.
