- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2016I must admit that I had no idea who Ella Woodward was until I saw this book near the top of the Amazon best-seller charts and impulsively pre-ordered it because of this. I have bought quite a few healthy eating cookbooks of various types over the years by different authors. I know in advance that I'm not going to like all the recipes and I know that some are going to be fairly simple and obvious. If you're restricting certain ingredients that are high in sugar and fat then your options are a little more limited. I'm just looking for fresh ideas really and ways to use various ingredients that I've not thought of before. I'm not a professional chef, but I'm not a novice cook either, but this book certainly opened my eyes to a few new ideas.
I was already familiar with all of the ingredients used in this book, and some of the recipes were very similar to what I have come across before. That's not surprising, but if you are new to healthier eating and this kind of cookbook, then there is wealth of information inside. Each chapter starts with a comprehensive introduction and a shopping list. Every recipe has an explanatory paragraph at the top, and where appropriate a "tweak it", "kitchen know how", "make it better" or "shop sense" footnote at the bottom, which offer additional tips. I've no real problem with the layout, except there are a few too many full page photographs of Ella Woodward and other full page photographs of random fresh ingredients. The majority of the recipes, but certainly not all, have accompanying photographs, so the space could have been better used by attaching more recipe photographs, but this is a minor issue.
I was a bit underwhelmed by some of the recipes in the first couple of chapters ("breakfast" and "healthy eating on-the-go") because some of them are very simple no-cook recipes with less than a handful of ingredients that don't require much imagination. In contrast, as you get towards the end of the book, in the later chapters (in particular "big batch cooking" and "simple sweets") the recipes are mostly far from obvious and quite creative. Having only owned the book for a couple of days I obviously can't claim to have tried many of the recipes, but I have tried the chickpea, quinoa and turmeric curry because I had all of the ingredients to hand. I've made curries of that sort before but the combination of ingredients was a bit different and I must admit it turned out very well indeed. I can see how many of the other recipes would work, but at the same time can't quite imagine the taste, so there are a few more to try in the next week or two. No great cooking skill is required for any of the recipes, basic techniques are all that is needed.
Overall, I am very satisfied with what is a well-written and interesting book. It will be particularly useful for those with not much experience with healthy eating.
Since there is currently no option to look inside the book on Amazon, I have added a list of contents and recipes.
The contents page looks like this:

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2016As a family of 6 (2 adults, 1 teenager, 2 primary age and 1 toddler) it is very expensive to eat healthily from scratch. Two of us have a dairy intollerance (Dairy seems to be in everything!) and one of my daughters was recently diagnosed with IBS so I have done quite a bit of research into how we could modify our diet to ease symptoms and aid health.
I originally came across Ella's website and app and found the way she writes to be very enthusiastic. The first recipe I found on her website (The Best Lunch Bowl) was a success and so I decided to buy Ella's new book as it was on half price pre order price.
I have to say I am delighted with the book and have been using it regularly for recipes or just inspiration for our meals. Recent successes have been Veggie Paella, Black Bean Hommous, Buddah Bowl, and The Best Baked Potato. I have also had great results from many of the online recipes and those on the app. I know they have been much criticized but we all loved the sweet potato brownies!
I tend to stick to the batch cooking recipes but have used all the sections of the book at one time or another.
Many of the ingredients are used in a number of the recipes so won't go to waste (assuming you like them) but I didn't find this meant the recipes were repetitive. Lots of the ingredients are found in your store cupboard if you cook from scratch a lot anyway.
I should point out that my children are (luckily) not all that fussy or unfamiliar when it comes to many foods included in this book, especially vegetables, pulses, grains. So in that respect it has been fairly easy to incorporate it into my weekly meal planner. I add chicken or fish as required as we are not vegetarian just dairy free due to dietary needs.
I have toyed with the idea of buying the first book but think I will go into a bookstore and have a flick through to see if it's worth buying first. I'm not sure if the negative reviews are due to people just not enjoying this way of eating or for some other reason but it's enough to make me want to hold fire before ordering.
Finally, since using this book and eating clean we have found our food bill has decreased by around 30% a week due to less meat products and little extras. Most of the recipes leave you feeling satisfied and stop you reaching for snacks, in our experience anyway!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Nutritious Meal Ideas for a Healthy Life
I have Ella's original cookbook Deliciously Ella so I wanted to try this one for even more delicious recipes that are healthy and nourishing. The first recipe that I tried was the zucchini and carrot salad. It was so incredibly easy and the dressing was simple and delicious. Even my husband liked it! What I find the most significant about Ella's recipes and food philosophy is that it really does matter what we put into our bodies. And it can change the way we feel, the way we look and our overall health. On a personal note, over the Summer, I had gotten away from healthy eating because of lack of convenience (one of the reasons I purchased this book). As a result, I had been feeling incredibly sluggish, total lack of energy, my skin and hair had started to look dull and lifeless and I just didn't have a glow at all. In short, I wasn't giving my body what it needed and boy did it show! I felt pretty awful: aches and pains and soreness where I would have to take aspirin or ibuprofen to get rid of it. I felt just all around lousy. This was my body giving me signals to get straight: seriously. As soon as I started eating healthy again, I started to feel amazing. My energy levels started to improve, I slept better, and my skin started to glow with less wrinkles and my skin is much more hydrated. That haggard, tired look started to fade and I felt soooo much better. I started drinking a lot more water and herbal teas adding baobab powder, maca powder etc. when possible...After I had a cup of Rooibos tea, I literally looked better 15 minutes in. Amazing. So, I have incorporated these recipes into my rotations and I'm thrilled with them. I can't begin to say enough how important it really is to take care of and nourish your body with healthy foods and to just let the junk and processed foods go once and for all. I know that I won't ever be going back to eating or drinking junk again. Thanks to Ella for the lovely cookbook and yummy healthy combinations!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Down to Earth
I bought this before owning her other cookbook. This is a book filled with easy every day recipes. She uses a lot of the same ingrediants for dressings or to add flavour but the unique mixes always bring something different to the meal. It doesn't include any specialty or crazy hard to find ingrediants and I find her writing approachable and friendly. Amongst my many cookbooks Ive used her often since Ive purchased it. I think you will find value in this as well.
