An Imaginative Paper Mario Adventure with a Sticky Twist

A sticky situation has never been so fun. There's trouble afoot in the town of Decalburg, where the devious Bowser has disrupted the beloved Sticker Fest by causing the Sticker Comet to explode. Now Royal Stickers and pieces of the comet have been flung far and wide, and it's up to Mario and his ally Kersti to set things right by recovering them. This captivating handheld adventure will have new and experienced fans of the Paper Mario series captivated as they navigate colorful 3D environments, defeat enemies, collect oodles of stickers and items, and use them in a variety of fun ways.

Key Game Features

  • Stickers are the key to this imaginative adventure. Battles are turn-based like in the original Paper Mario game, but instead of an attack menu, Mario whomps on his enemies using a sticker to attack. Stickers not only serve as Mario's attacks, but also help solve puzzles throughout the Paper Mario universe when placed in the correct spots. Stickers can be found and collected from all corners of the world, and the flashier the sticker, the more powerful it is.
  • Mario can also spend coins to use the Battle Spinner, which lets him use up to 3 stickers in one turn if the icons are lined up just right. The Battle Spinner can turn the tide in a difficult battle, so collecting coins through the game to use it is crucial.
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star players get stronger by beating bosses, finding items and completing side missions for other characters in the game instead of accumulating experience points.
  • As players progress through the game, they'll find and use more powerful stickers to boost Mario's attack power. Players can also find HP-Up hearts to further boost Mario's maximum health.
  • The environments in Paper Mario: Sticker Star come to life in this visually-stunning papercraft world on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. They also contain a wide range of objects such as electric fans, scissors and radiators that can be converted into more stickers, which can then be used to solve puzzles or win battles as Mario maneuvers through each level.

Never mind the negative reviews.

Never mind the negative reviews.
So yes.... this is not quite your father's Paper Mario. But it is a Paper Mario nonetheless. Most of the complaints I saw were just involving the collection and use of stickers. Saying it took away from the classic Mario formula and so on and so forth. But other classics like Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart CERTAINLY was not in the style of classic Mario either. Yet they are widely loved parts of the Mario franchise. I was thrilled to pick this up at a decent price to re-add to my DS/3DS games collection. The seller shipped promptly and the game runs just as good as new. If you have never played this title, I would STRONGLY urge that you get it and see what I am talking about.

This game is incredible fun and if you are a newcomer i highly recommend it!
The game isn't on par with The original Paper Mario or Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door but its a step up from super Paper Mario.

    Things I Liked:
New Sticker Fighting System makes the game feel fresh
Decently Long game takes around 20 hours to beat
3D is cleverly used/ nicely done
    The Humor

    Things I Disliked:
    Lack of Story
    No companions
some RPG elements removed such as leveling up stats

They removed some things that many people including myself loved about this series such as companions and leveling up! But that doesn't make this a bad game its more of a simplified version of what paper mario used to be (which isnt a bad thing) the game is still a huge blast and its fun collecting different stickers and learning how to beat certain bosses and finding secrets.

Overall if you are a hardcore Paper Mario fan you might be a bit disappointed but if you want a fun adventure game with a simple turn based fighting then this game is for you!

I do understand why some people are disappointed with the game because it is hard to compare this game to the other Paper Mario games, but it is important to realize that the older Paper Mario games were console games and this is a 3D handheld console game. I feel there is a good amount of content and gameplay within the game. There are also side challenges available such as the sticker museum and achievement banners. The game is entertaining and amusing. The worlds are engaging and creative. It isn't as much of an RPG as the previous games, but it is still really fun. You collect stickers which can be used in battle to fight enemies; such as a "jump" (boot) sticker which lets you use a jump attack or a "hammer" sticker to use the hammer attack. You also have to find pieces of the levels which were removed so that you can replace them as stickers. There are also "things" to collect which are "real world" items that can be turned into stickers and used to unlock parts of levels, to fight bosses, or to add to the museum.

I personally enjoy this game and feel that it is an excellent addition to the Mario franchise. I think this game will be enjoyable my most age groups.

I purchased thousand year door when it came out and fell in love with the game. Once I noticed Sticker Star was available for the 3ds I knew I had to try it. Unlike the Gamecube and Wii versions, the dialogue is at a minimum and the game is much faster paced. This was really great. It took me a month to beat becuase there were lots of levels and challenging parts. I liked the classic "level" structure of the game and the sticker premise, although this made the game more challenging and having a limit on the amount of stickers used was quite annoying as well. I'd recommend looking for a walkthrough either in book form or on the internet, because there is no way you can do it without it. The boss fights were also interesting but challenging. It is a game that can be easily beaten IF you know all of the secrets, but the first time through there will be a lot of going back because you messed up.

I bought this game as a graduation gift for my cousin who has loved playing Mario games since he was a kid. This is the game he wanted and ever since he opened his gift he's been playing that game nonstop. Perfect for any Mario fans!!!
  • Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2012
First, you should know I've never played any of the previous installments in this series, so I can't compare it to the other games. Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a turn-based action/adventure game. The story follows Mario as he collects the six Royal Stickers that Bowser has scattered across the world; it packs plenty of humorous and warm-hearted moments, and plenty of quirky/hilarious dialogue, especially from the Toads. Although the story is very basic in typical Mario style, the gameplay is really engaging.

The gameplay is very simple, and easy to pick-up-and-play. You move with the circle pad, jump with A, use your hammer with B, paperize with Y, and open your sticker book with X (or by tapping the touchscreen); when you paperize, you can set stickers and scraps down on to the world, so this feature is mostly used to solve puzzles. The combat is turn-based; you attack using 1-3 of the many different sticker types you collect, you can even use special stickers like scissors or a fan. Collecting and organizing your stickers is the really engrossing part of the gameplay. From basic stomp stickers to shiny shells, there are plenty of stickers with plenty of different effects to collect. Therefore, this is closer to a turn-based strategy game than an RPG.

The graphics are great; the paper environments and character models are easy on the eyes and often charming. Also, there are plenty of environments to visit like the deserts or the snow, so that adds some variety. I don't often play with the 3D effect on, but I did test it out for this review. The 3D effectively adds depth into the environment and the cutscenes try to show it off by throwing toads or flying enemies to the player often. It looks great when new characters/villains are introduced and when you pull/collect stickers, but it doesn't really benefit the gameplay significantly.

The music is great, and very enchanting like most Nintendo games. It's hard to explain, but if has that Mario music vibe; as in, as soon as you hear it, you know it's from a Mario game. The music definitely adds to the amazingly charming atmosphere this game creates because it changes as you change environments. A major plus from me because of the music.

Although it has a simple story and easy yet addicting gameplay, there are some puzzles that may require some extra assistance (i.e. Strategy guides). I've had to look for help probably two or three times after looking for the answer myself for a long enough time. It doesn't hurt the game too badly, but it's worth noting. Also, the gameplay gets a little repetitive if you play for too long (as it does with most games), and some of the worlds/subworlds feel too similar to each other; again, this isn't too bad of a problem if you don't play for extended amounts of time.

I have played the game for about 4 hours and have been playing in World 2 for a while. There are apparently 6 worlds in this game, so, at my pace, I'm not really worried about the game's overall length. It should last at least 20, or more, hours, but I will return to this review to update with my final game time when I complete it, regardless.

Overall, I've really enjoyed Paper Mario: Sticker Star so far. The gameplay is addicting and keeps you moving forward, and the worlds are fun and unique. Although I would love to play a RPG Mario game, this game works extremely well with the turn-based combat. I haven't ran into any glitches or bugs, either.
