Product Description

Our beans are traditionally cured over several months to ensure that the full flavor of the vanilla bean is developed. We do not sell quick cured vanilla beans where the beans are cured in 7 to 10 days.

These vanilla beans are triple inspected. The first inspection takes place during packing and is for smell and appearance. The next inspection takes place during vacuum sealing and is for appearance. The final inspection takes place before shipment to ensure that the vacuum seal is intact.

Gourmet vanilla beans are primarily used in desserts like creme brulee and vanilla ice cream. They can also be used in exotic main courses like Vanilla Scallops on a Skewer or Turbot with Vanilla, Asparagus Tips, and Chicken Cocoa Grue Sauce.

Some facts about vanilla beans:

- Bourbon refers to the formerly named Bourbon Islands (now Reunion) off of Madagascar. Bourbon alcohol is not used in vanilla beans.
- Vanilla beans are the second most labor intensive spice after saffron.
- They originated in Mexico.
- Vanilla beans must be hand pollinated outside of Mexico because the pollinator, the Melipona bee, cannot survive outside of Mexico.
- When the vanilla orchid blooms, it must be pollinated within 24 hours or else the boom dies and no vanilla pod is produced for that bloom.
- Vanilla is an orchid, and the beans are the fruit of the orchid.
- It is the only orchid fruit that we eat.
- There are over 200 organic compounds in vanilla. Artificial vanilla (vanillin) cannot capture the complexity of natural vanilla.
- The United States consumes roughly half of all vanilla beans produced in the world.

I've purchased these a couple of times now, and I have not regretted either. They are simply fantastic beans, and much more economical than grocery store beans. Not only that, but they are consistently in great shape and plump, unlike the dry/tasteless beans I've gotten from stores in the past. I'll have to get a smaller batch next time, but for these, I just froze the ones I couldn't use immediately. I've done it in the past, and freezing seems to work fairly well at preserving them for about a year.

I used them to make crème brûlée, vanilla (~8oz of vodka per bean), vanilla sugar (just plop in a container of sugar!), hot chocolate, and a few other treats. They have been consistently delicious, fragrant, and plump.

    Pros:
-Full, never dry, smell great, taste even better
-Higher-quality and less-expensive than grocery store vanilla beans

    Cons:
-There are so many, I ran out of uses for them and had to freeze some!

Hooray for real vanilla beans at less than the 5$ per bean grocery store price! These are great quality beans for baking, ice cream making and making my vanilla sugar. I keep mine triple bagged and in a glass jar to keep fresh and moist. These came with a freebie of extract quality split beans as well. All total I got something like 28 beans for the 20 price! Score! You can't beat that price. As for flavor, they are delicious - I think a hint on the mellow side from beans I've used previously. Meaning, I use a whole bean where I'd only use half before. I don't mind at all, frankly. It feels luxurious to be able to use the whole bean in a recipe and you can afford it at such a great price! Lovely specks of fresh vanilla in my ice cream and simply toss the scrapped out pod into your sugar canister for that special kick in baked goods later. Yum! Delicious and wonderful product I hope to purchase again and again!

My beans were nice and plump and they had a great smell. The vanilla extract I'm making is now 3 mos old. I don't shake it like I should, but it is developing a very nice flavor.

I probably will never make vanilla again as my husband found a 16oz organic bourbon Madagascar pure vanilla extract for $1 more than just the beans and I really really like the flavor of it.

I have been making my own vanilla for a while now. This was my first time purchasing from this company and I am really pleased with the quality of the beans. They were sealed well and so fragrant you could smell the richness through the packaging. They were plump and not at all dried out which I have unfortunately experienced in the past. It's difficult to split tough, dried out beans and I didn't have that problem with these. It was nice to get the sample of the "Grade B" variety which I made a test jar of. I'm excited to taste test the difference. Getting those free sample beans led me to do research and I learned that Grade B was preferable for making homemade vanilla extract. And I thought I was getting the best buying Grade A! Time will tell!

These vanilla beans are absolutely amazing! They're plump and juicy, not borderline desert-dry like the kind you find at the supermarket. I've been to over 7 different grocery stores in Los Angeles, and they were selling ONE vanilla pod in a jar for 10 F*****G DOLLARS! 25 long and 'ripe' vanilla beans with expedient shipping? Sign me up! Plus, it was very nice that the company gave me 3 extra mini vanilla beans with my order. Also, some of my friends have asked me how I store my vanilla beans and I just put them in a mason jar and make sure I close the jar very, very tightly and keep it in a closed/dark cabinet/shelf. ALSO, don't throw away your used vanilla pods! Let them dry out overnight and put them in your sugar jar and you'll have amazing vanilla sugar with no waste! x

I bought these in order to make my own vanilla extract. I had a recipe, but decided to use the one that came with the vanilla beans instead. A month later, I was thrilled to have a large container of fragrant, homemade vanilla extract. I'm not a vanilla bean expert. However, these beans seemed to be fresh, vacuum sealed nicely, a good value, and flavorful. I will buy again. I liked the fact that they included a recipe, as well as instructions to double-wrap the bag of beans in plastic wrap if you were not going to use them right away. They came across as a quality company.

Never buy that $9 vanilla bean from the store again!!
Granted, those being exorbitant does not speak in favor of these exactly, but since that is most of our alternative, these are a steal.

Of more importance is that they are very fresh. You will have to transfer them to a ziploc (double even) bag and keep them as vacuum sealed as possible to keep this having a long shelf life, but they are very fresh.

My package actually had 28 in it—4 were small or not entirely fresh, but that left me with 24 long healthy beans with a very large number of seeds (these are fat beans guys). This takes your baking/ice cream to a new level of affordability/flavor over the ones in the stores that are ancient because they are too expensive to produce any real turnover.

The Grade A beans in the package were dry, stiff, hard to cut, and had no aroma. I used one bean for a custard pie, there was no aroma at any stage of the baking. The included free sample of three Grade B beans were no better. I am returning them all, but now I have to pay for the return (a new package, postal). Will try a different supplier.
Just a word about this seller's attitude. Instead of apologizing for poor quality control, they wrote:
" I'm sorry that you are not happy with your beans. The full aroma of the beans will not be apparent until you make extract or cook with them." Meaning, you can't tell good beans from bad until you cook them? Ridiculous. They failed that test anyway.
