The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease Paperback – 2 Oct. 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
In The Story of the Human Body, Daniel Lieberman, Professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard, shows how we need to change our world to fit our hunter-gatherer bodies
This ground-breaking book of popular science explores how the way we use our bodies is all wrong. From an evolutionary perspective, if normal is defined as what most people have done for millions of years, then it's normal to walk and run 9 -15 kilometres a day to hunt and gather fresh food which is high in fibre, low in sugar, and barely processed. It's also normal to spend much of your time nursing, napping, making stone tools, and gossiping with a small band of people.
Our 21st-century lifestyles, argues Daniel Lieberman, are out of synch with our stone-age bodies. Never have we been so healthy and long-lived - but never, too, have we been so prone to a slew of problems that were, until recently, rare or unknown, from asthma, to diabetes, to - scariest of all - overpopulation.
The Story of the Human Body asks how our bodies got to be the way they are, and considers how that evolutionary history - both ancient and recent - can help us evaluate how we use our bodies. How is the present-day state of the human body related to the past? And what is the human body's future?
'Monumental. The Story of the Human Body, by one of our leading experts, takes us on an epic voyage' - Neil Shubin, author of Your Inner Fish
'Riveting, enlightening, and more than a little frightening' - Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run
Daniel Lieberman is the Chair of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard and a leader in the field. He has written nearly 100 articles, many appearing in the journals Nature and Science, and his cover story on barefoot running in Nature was picked up by major media the world over. His research and discoveries have been highlighted in newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Boston Globe, Discover, and National Geographic.

About the author

Daniel Lieberman is Edwin M. Lerner II Professor of Biological Sciences and a professor of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He received degrees from Harvard and Cambridge, and taught at Rutgers University and George Washington University before joining Harvard University as a Professor in 2001. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Lieberman studies and teaches how and why the human body is the way it is, and how our evolutionary history affects health and disease. In his research he combines experimental biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology both in the lab and in the field (primarily Kenya and Mexico). He is best known for his work on the evolution of running and other kinds of physical activities such as walking and throwing, but is also well known for studying the evolution of the human head.
Lieberman loves teaching and has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, many in journals such as Nature, Science, and PNAS, as well as three popular books, The Evolution of the Human Head (2011), The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease (2013), and Exercised: Why Something We Never Evolved to Do is Healthy and Rewarding (2020).
In his spare time, he enjoys running - sometimes barefoot, earning him the nickname 'the Barefoot Professor'.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2016I believe this is a very important book. Daniel Lieberman takes a methodical, clear-eyed approach as he draws upon the evidence we have to hand to show that human beings evolved to be hunter-gatherers and that our bodies are the bodies of hunter-gatherers. While he does not present this era as a paradise, he shows that for 200,000 years we did not suffer from the diseases and problems that we have now in modern society: there were no epidemics (there were too few of us and we were not crowded together), there was not diabetes, cancer etc. on the scale we have today. We did not harm the environment like we do now. Lieberman shows, more incisively than most similar books, that two massively important cultural changes -- the introduction of farming roughly at 7000 BC in the Middle East, and the mass industrialisation at the end of the 18th century -- have created huge problems for the human body on many levels. This book really nails many of our problems today.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 March 2017I think the headline says it all really. This book is probably up there with the best I've ever read. My major passions include evolutionary biology, health and wellbeing and fitness - this book combines them all. The first part of this book is very similar to Sapiens: A look back at our ancestors including how they used to live and their evolutionary past. The second part of the book focuses more on where we are now and describes how the environment we live in and the power of cultural evolution has created a mis-match for our bodies. The book is absolutely packed full of information and if you're anything like me, you will finish it examining your own lifestyle and how you can make small or major changes to improve your health and longevity.
I really cannot praise this book enough. It's the type of book which should be read not just by individuals, but governments around the Western world in order to improve our societal approach to health and disease. As the book illustrates - we've created an environment which has done some wonderful but also damaging things which is making us sick. Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution have not prepared us for a life of inactivity and an abundance of fatty, sugary, salty foods.
There are changes that need to be made before healthcare systems in the Western world are crippled and collapse.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2025This book is an incredibly thought-provoking dive into the history of the human body, blending evolutionary biology with modern health issues in a way that's both enlightening and accessible. I was expecting a purely academic read, but the way Daniel Lieberman weaves in the story of human evolution, lifestyle changes, and how they’ve affected our health is truly engaging.
What really stood out to me was how relevant this book feels to today’s conversations about health and wellness. Lieberman ties everything back to how our bodies were designed for a different time and how our modern lifestyle, with its sedentary habits and processed foods, is wreaking havoc on our evolutionary adaptations. It's a little like a wake-up call, but in a way that’s filled with fascinating facts and research.
The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is that at times, some sections felt a bit dense, and I found myself wishing for more real-world examples or stories to break up the scientific jargon. But overall, this book gives you a new perspective on what it means to be human in the context of our biology — and how we can make smarter choices to live healthier lives. A highly recommended read for anyone with even a passing interest in human biology, evolution, or health!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2016In this book Daniel goes through the evolution of the human body, followed by talking about mismatch diseases and effects of sugar, fat, salt and low activity on human body, which I found quite educating read.
You will find out such things for example such as how body converts sugar into energy, energy consumption by hunter gatherers versus modern human, brain size relative to primates and what being not active does to our body. These are only few snippets from the book, there is much more.
The book covers quite a lot of stuff. In human evolution part he talks about Apes and Humans and our common ancestors, on how we became bipedals, following by culture and rise of farming which caused our population to explode which exposed us to all sorts of diseases and then ending book with looking at whats causing certain mismatch diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and how our body responds to them.
By reading this book you will learn more about human evolution, on how environment and history made us who we are today. You will also learn more about the way your body works, health, diet and what can cause certain mismatch diseases. The book is eye opener and I would highly recommend it to read it through.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 March 2014I am a trainer who uses an evolutionary fitness model in both my personal lifestyle and in the education and straining of others.
This book sums up the various facets that affect fitness and wellness (movement, nutrition and lifestyle) and how they relate to our background as a species.
It highlights mismatches between our environment of evolutionary adaptation and our modern post industrialised world distilling the information in an easily absorbable way.
There are great examples all along the way and a wide range of studies and resources are cited with a sizeable bibliography at the end for further reading.
This is a highly practical guide for anyone wanting to know anything real about what makes us human and how to look after ourselves.
Lieberman garners the readers trust by way of the fact that he himself is a peer reviewed and respected professor of anthropology with a wealth of experience in the field.
The only problem is it is so well researched that I feel I will become academically lazy and use this book as a single source for my evolution fitness based questions.
