I use round toothpicks and the beak picks up the toothpick with such ease and requires almost no effort to use. And the reservoir where the toothpick stash is held is covered so that the toothpicks stay nice and clean until you need them!

This thing is not only cute, it's functional. I've tried it out on the dozen-or-so toothpicks that came with the unit, and also using some generic round toothpicks -- it works fine.

It's cheap plastic, so who knows how long it will last; but the cuteness factor is off the charts high.

My biggest "complaint" would be that I wish it had a couple of eyes on the animal (and yes, a magic marker will easily fix that). Another "complaint" would be the woodpecker name -- mine is black and white so I call it "Tux" named after the GNU/Linux penguin.

Don't hesitate, buy this novelty -- you know you "need" it. :)

I love this toothpick dispenser. I saw one at a restaurant a few years back and loved it. I was just looking for a replacement for a plain plastic box-style one with the one toothpick hole on top, and this came up in the search. I was surprised at how reasonable the price was to own one. I refilled it with just regular round toothpicks and those work just fine. The fancier ones that came with it were a little smoother, so they always came out right, first time, every time. The bamboo 1000 ct I bought for refills might have a little bit rougher edges, so I did have those jam once, but I opened it up and resettled them and it works perfectly again. So, for smoothest operation buy the official refills, but if you don't mind having to fiddle with it every now and again, you can save a lot of money by buying the cheap toothpicks.

I like how it’s a penguin that’s called a woodpecker and it dispenses toothpicks. It is a superb toothpick dispenser, whether it’s a woodpecker or a penguin.

This is my second woodpecker-that’s-a-penguin toothpick dispenser. The original worked, rain or shine, for years. My grandson loved it and spent many a happy hour dispensing toothpicks. Alas, he wore the spring out and it snapped from metal fatigue. I knew Amazon would have another to replace it, which I did immediately, for an absurdly low price.

It came just a couple days later and it exceeds my every expectation. Well, not exceeds, because I expected another toothpick dispenser that was just like the first, and I got it. So it met my expectations, but they were quite high to begin with.

This is a superb product, although it is a penguin and not a woodpecker as advertised. But it was a penguin I was replacing, and the picture on Amazon clearly shows a penguin though it says it’s a woodpecker. Great product and I will tell my friends and order again when the spring on this new woodpecker/penguin breaks.
