If the child is of Jr. High (Middle School) age their hands should be big enough to handle the many cords they will learn on this full scale instrument (24 3/4 inch scale). 

If however they are elementary school age then I would suggest a shorter scale guitar like the Epiphone Express series (Epiphone is also a Gibson subsidiary like Maestro). The Les Paul Express and SG Express have a much shorter scale (nearly 3 inches shorter) at 22 inches which will be easier for smaller fingers to play cords. This and a much smaller body also make for a lighter instrument that will be easier for smaller bodies to hold up.

I gave a Epiphone SG Express to my young nephew for Christmas years ago along with a Rocksmith 2014 Game which I also recommend as it teaches them to play on their own guitar in a fun video game format. Just be sure that the game comes with the interface cable that plugs the guitar to their game console or computer.

Perfect for Beginners

Perfect started for anyone. Bought this for my 11 year old son to learn on. When paired with Fender Play, it's been a great purchase. My dad, an avid musician and high-quality instrument collector, felt this guitar is actually really decent quality, especially for a starter. Amp is not the best quality, but great to start with.

This guitar works great! The amp isn't the best but hey, it works! In my opinion this is a great guitar for a beginner. I am a beginner and this guitar has helped me a lot. I love how it comes with a DVD explaining how to tune your guitar and notes and chords. This is a great guitar overall, but there are a little things I would recommend to make better. First off please make the strap better, the strap is ok, but its cheap made. I put it on this guitar and my guitar almost fell on my leg. Its not that big of a deal but it can make a difference to make it better. Second off please make the amp better. The amp is ok but it only has three buttons for the actual guitar! This guitar is a great beginners guitar and I love it!

Been playing guitar for 30 years, I bought this based on the reviews and I figured it could give me something to modify and if I screw up, just throw it out.  $65, are you kidding? First impressions, neck feels nice. I like a wider neck then Fender guitars. The fret bars are a little blocked and need filed.  The neck is straight but the bridge needs adjusted.  Adjusting the bridge is super easy and explains it in the owners manual.  The guitar is surprisingly light.  I hate heavy guitars like old Les Pauls.  The sound is nice with very clear low notes.  It doesn't have a whole lot of hiss which is good and the crunch of the humbucker is nice and full.  The tone and volume knobs worked fine.  To me, it sounds like Neil Young's old black Les Paul.  Like I said, I love Les Paul sound but hate the weight and feel.  Honestly, I really like this guitar.  It comes with a 5-year limited lifetime warranty from Gibson - whatever that means.  For this price, are you really going to mail it to them to get fixed?  It's a nice gesture though.  My only concerns are the tuners and the 1/4" jack.  It kept going out of tune but it had new strings, which are junk, on it and I didn't let the guitar acclimate to the temperature and humidity in the house.  I just received it in the mail.  I got a little static from the jack but a little contact cleaner may fix that.  Overall, a really nice guitar for a super cheap price.  Yes, I would buy it again and recommend.

5 STAR GUITAR - Based on Price and Potential

it's been several months since we've had this. It's an awesome guitar. Don't forget to stretch the strings when you first put them on or you will think it doesn't hold its tune, it does.

This is a decent beginner full-size guitar for the low price. Amp included makes it a good deal.

Good for the price.

The guitar package is very good for the  price but  weakness is on the guitar neck. The guitar neck is made of two  woods together and  mine was damaged in the join between two woods (upper of the  neck).  So I returned it to Walmart and order another one since I thought the issue happened during the shipping. Got another one but has the same issue on  the same spot. but with less damage. Aarrgh!! So I may have to return this one also. :(

$75 dollars seemed like a good deal. After $180 set up it wasn't so cheap. 2 screws from the bridge were laying in the white bag the guitar was in. Fret ends are rough and sharp. String height is 3/8 inch from the pickup. If you like doing fret jobs and set ups this is the one for you

I got this after black Friday sale for about $60. Is it worth that? Sure, but over $100?  Probably not. I had to take it straight to a professional to adjust the neck and string height. I would say it was unplayable straight out of the box. The amp is ok, maybe enough to get by.  I honestly do not think I would buy this again but for the price I paid, it was barely worth it.
