About
Natalie Prass In Concert
Cleveland-born singer-songwriter Natalie Prass carries a whole lot of soul in her angelic pipes, whether she's going a little country, a little rock ‘n' roll, or a whole lot of lush, lavish indie pop. It's a mix that's tender yet tough, a reflection of the hard-earned path that helped shape her solo career. Prass grew up playing the piano and attended Berklee College of Music for a year, before making her way down to Tennessee. There, she immersed herself in the Nashville scene, jumping between session work and late-night gigs for years. But it wasn't until she scored the spot as keyboardist for Jenny Lewis' touring band that she was inspired to go bigger.
While on tour with Lewis, Prass began work on her self-titled debut, which eventually released in early 2015. ‘Natalie Prass' is sweeping and cinematic; her pristine pipes cozy up in a bed of lush string and brass arrangements as she emits the sweet sensuality of Janet Jackson with a touch of St. Vincent's warped, Disney-esque quirk. The album was an indie critic favorite and led her back out on the road, opening for artists like Fleet Foxes and The War on Drugs, this time playing her own songs. This led to headlining shows, major festival slots, and even an appearance on the HBO series ‘Vinyl.'
She soon started working on her second album, and after scrapping her first attempt, eventually recorded the politically fueled, synth-lined ‘The Future and the Past' in 2018. Swapping ornate instrumentation for a rich pastiche of ‘80s-inspired soul, punchy disco grooves, and smooth lounge-pop, she sings of female empowerment with a cool yet defiant confidence. She leads her band with just the same colorful style and poise when she hits the stage, a place that's become her second home.

by JPister on 11/11/15The Sinclair - CambridgeIt was a Sunday evening and I was doubting why I'd bought the tickets 4 months earlier - due to the darkness descending earlier now and the uncertainty of what the experience would be. It was a great experience that has been carrying me through my work week. The opening band Loamlands were excellent. Then Natalie Prass and her band came on and totally surprised me. She and her band are great live, even though at times I felt the musicians overtook her voice. Love, loved their version of Sound of Silence. Looking forward to buying her newest musical gift.
