Yes you can I cut the cord with the old Apple box and Roku. I hooked a antina up to the TV and got the local channels free most were Spanish but still had ABC NBC CBS and FOX plus a few local Las Vegas stations. I pay for Netflex Hulu PLus HBO GO and Amizon Prime which is about 30.00 a month. You also have to pay for internet for it to work. With the new Apple box you can download apps like on the phone for TV stations some are free some you have to sign into your cable account to watch. You can also download Itunes for music. If you have a IPhone or IPad I would get the new Apple TV because it will sinc with your phone or pad if you are&#39;nt using Apple products now I would go with the Rolu or Amizon box there a lot cheaper and do almost the same thing.

It depends on what channels you want to watch... Currently a majority of the channels on Apple TV require an existing cable subscription to access (example CNN, MTV, Lifetime, etc). There are becoming more and more you can subscribe to independently every month however (CBS, HBO, Showtime, etc). If you are just looking for a way to stream Netflix and Hulu, and have an amazing selection from iTunes for rentals and purchases then it&#39;s a great box. I think more channels will continue to be available without a cable subscription but it&#39;s limited right now. If you can pickup the major networks over the air that helps fill the gap.

You can cancel your cable BUT to use the tv apps you will have to sign in with your Satellite or Cable provider even the networks. Netflix Hulu Amazon Prime all need subscription too. There are free channels from all over but might not be what you want to watch?

I believe that Apple has or is going to make it easier to sign in. You&#39;ll only have to do it once.

Also, if you have a SMART TV, you may already have access to most of the channels available including those that require subscriptions such as NETFLIX. 

I have  Samsung SMART TV and there is a great selection, but some may require separate subscription fees while others are free.

Make sure you have HDMI cable handy to connect Apple TV to your TV. Then you are all set.

I've had Apple Tv for the last 3 years and I own a Fire Stick and a Roku and several 'smart' Tv's and DVD players.  The Apple TV has ALWAYS been better than all the rest of those devices. And the new 4th generation AppleTV is amazing.  Speedy and I love the unified search.  I wish I could afford to replace my other AppleTV, Firestick, and Roku with this device.  I do wish I could get my Amazon Prime Video on my Apple TV easily.  But I understand Apple and Amazon are in the same content provider business so that won't happen soon.  Siri Search, Apps, and games make this a definite recommendation for anyone.

We recently discontinued our cable/satalite service and are not using over the air digital for local stations.  We still love netflix and recently discovered Slingtv that has all my favorite channels....hgtv, espn, history channel.  We love it and have cut our costs by 65%.  So worth it.

Item was originally purchased to go under the tree for Christmas. My husband and I were so excited that we opened and started using it promptly. Love the changes to the remote... system seems to load more quickly than the original. Would definitely recommend upgrading to the newer model if you haven't done so already.

A few glitches and one main complaint which is probably not Apple's fault. No Amazon app!!! Yikes. I just bought movies with Amazon that are now worthless. 

Great product though and typical Apple style. Easy to use and nice user interface. Much cleaner than Roku.

Love it! Much better than Roku

this is an Apple product, so you know it's good.
just a couple of cons:  
(1) the remote has a couple issues. the touchpad is too sensitive and takes you places you didn't intend to go. I prefer buttons to the touchpad. BUT the voice activated rewind and fast forward is da bomb! greatest thing ever on a remote. want to rewind 13 seconds? just ask. want to FF 14 minutes and 2 seconds? just ask. most remotes get you close, this function is exact.
(2) you cannot get the AMAZON app on Apple TV, they consider it a competitor to iTunes (!). so if you have cut the cable and want one device to stream ALL services, Apple TV will not do that. sad. I have to use my Blu-ray player to access the Amazon app, and that is much slower than the Apple device.
I also have a Roku 3 on another tv and you can get ALL the apps on that. it also has a voice search function, but not enabled for rewind and FF. too bad, get with it Roku  :o)
I use the Amazon, Netflix and Hulu apps every day (but never iTunes), so I use the Roku as my #1 device. but the Apple TV device is still awesome, and I'm glad I have it.

good streaming product

Upgraded from third generation to fourth. I like the sleekness of the fourth generation and the fact that you can delegate which apps you would like on there vs a standard template. I am hoping that there will be many more updated/compatible apps coming out in the future. The touch remote takes a little getting used to as it is very sensitive to touch, and be advised as always these devices do no come with HDMI cable. Seamless compatibility and set up with your iPad and/or iPhone.

Good Upgrade From Prior Generations

I purchased the 4th Gen Apple TV as a Christmas gift for my wife as a replacement for the previous 3rd Gen.  I was pleasantly surprised to have the set up for the Apple TV be so easy via your iPhone by Bluetooth connectivity.  There was also a manual set up option for non iPhone users.  The main reason we made the purchase was the Siri remote and the ability to have Siri locate movies or shows via voice recognition.the Siri remote is no gimmick it works really well.  There was one additional feature I was impressed with and find extremely useful, you can connect a set of Bluetooth Headphones and listen to a movie/show late at night without disturbing anyone else in the house.  All in all this was an excellent purchase as we caught it on sale for $98.00 and the regular price at Apple is currently $149.00.  I would have gladly spent the $149.00.  I would highly recommend this product.
