What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.

What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?

Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.

Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.

Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.

How do I set up my unlocked phone?

The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

Buyers beware, this is not a factory unlocked Nexus 6

Buyers beware, this is not a factory unlocked Nexus 6
This is not an unlocked Nexus 6 as advertised! This is a Verizon Nexus 6 with full Verizon branding on the phone. Completely misleading information and false advertising. There is a huge difference between factory unlocked Nexus 6 and one taken from a network that is unlocked by the seller but still full of Verizon mutilation that they are known to do to Nexus phones. This needs to be specified on the ad. I didn't even turn it on when I saw Verizon branding on the phone and the box itself. Immediately requested return. Also, if you look at the second picture that I uploaded, you'll see the top grill on the screen where speaker is. It is full of what I can only imagine is previous owner's ear wax and all kind of dirty stuck in there. Yuck. This is unacceptable. There are scratches on the sides and back, nothing about this phone is certified refurbished.

I purchased the 32 GB certified refurbished Nexus 6. I was a little nervous to buy a refurbished phone but I literally could not tell that the phone was not brand new! There were no marks of any kind on the phone and it had a screen protector installed on the screen. It also came with the motorla charger(not sure if it's the quick charger) in a generic box with some bubble wrap. There was no instruction manual or sim tool but who really needs either one?

I wanted to make it clear that I use Sprint and I have read on Amazon from other people who tried to activate there Nexus 6 on the Sprint network that they either couldn't altogether or they had a very difficult time. This was definitely NOT the case for me. The only hold up for me was that they didn't have the sim card in stock so it took about 3 days to get it in. I will say that the Sprint rep had to go in and override the system to activate my phone but like I said, there were no issues.

The screen on this phone is very big and is the main reason I wanted this phone. I love the amoled display and the 2 front facing speakers. I watch a lot of YouTube like I'm sure a lot of people do and it is nice to not have to cup the phone with my hand in order to hear the speaker clearly. Some videos or games even have the stereo effect when you hold your phone in landscape mode and it sounds very nice. Obviously the sound depends on the content in this case. I do wish there was a little more control with the brightness on the display. At night it doesn't get that dim in complete darkness and when I'm outside its not overly bright when at full brightness but these are just minor things that are not that big of a deal to me that I just figured I would point out.

I purchased my phone on Amazon for $279.00 and ordered a spigen case to go with it and my total was under $290.00. I think this is HANDS DOWN the best deal you can get if you are in the market for a high end phablet. Of course this phone doesn't have all the latest and greatest specs but is still a very capable phone especially at this price point. Everything runs smoothly and is pretty darn snappy. All in all I believe that this phone is an absolute steal at this price point and think you will be absolutely thrilled if you decide to pick up this phone!

I typically get a new phone every 6 months or so, because I am never happy with what I have. I feel that for the price you pay for a phone, it should be able to do anything you need flawlessly. I have to say that this phone is one I will be using for a while. I never have to clear the apps out because it gets laggy. I have yet to have to recharge it during the day. It does everything I need it to.

It gets all of the updated versions of Android being a Nexus, so you do not have to wait for the carriers to push it out with all of their bloat ware software that they put on it. You can also sign up for the android N preview and get the latest beta version of android with it.

The quick charge is great. I can go from 0% charge to 70% charged in 20 minutes or so. The screen is incredibly clear. The speaker is plenty loud. Both for phone calls, and other things like watching video. The WiFi antenna has a great range and works with 2.4GHz or 5Ghz.

The screen is good quality glass as well. I have dropped this thing many times and haven't broke the screen yet. I even have a dent in the metal on the top of it and it still has not affected the usage.

This phone has everything I need, and works great. I do not see needing to buy another phone for several years. If I do, it will be just because I want the new version of the nexus, and not because it messed up.

Update, 12/31/2018: The below review was written a couple weeks into owning the phone. All went well until the other day, when after less than a month of use, the Wifi/Bluetooth Broadcomm chip died. The third-party seller doesn't have any more stock, so I will try again with somebody else, but let me caution you: this 2014 phone had a lot of hardware issues. If it wasn't the screen, it was random reboots. Now the Broadcomm chip. You can see my earlier experiences with purchasing this device below. I still consider it a phone worth owning if you can get a holy grail version without issues, but if you purchase, test well and hang onto whatever warranty you get.

I've been a fan of the Nexus 6 ever since first owning one at the end of 2014. Before that, I owned an original Nexus 7 tablet, and that's when I really grew to appreciate Google's direction with the Nexus product line. Side note: I wish they still produced these partnership products, but I understand the concept at the time was to educate manufacturers on what an "ideal" Android device should be like. What I liked was the originality that many manufacturer's brought to the hardware, especially this 6" phone, codenamed (and affectionately referred to still by many) as the "Shamu."

At first, the Nexus 6 was plagued with some manufacturing defects, including bad AMOLED screen burn-in. UI features that were usually displayed, like the status bar icons on top and the navigation drawer on the bottom, permanently left residual marks. At the time, all sorts of weird remedies were suggested among the user base, usually some variant of apps that would continually flash lots of colors across the screen, in the hopes of burning in the remainder of the screen, effectively making the marks disappear. Not an ideal situation.

I moved on from the Nexus 6 after almost two years, but I always missed the huge 16:9 format screen, very small "chin" and excellent stereo speakers. The camera wasn't too shabby either. All in all, while this is a big, heavy and unwieldy phone, it's still compelling even by modern design standards (maybe even more so after the push to 19:9 aspect ratios and notches). During the summer of 2017 I tried a couple "new, old stock" Nexus 6 models off eBay, and unfortunately the screen burn-in was present on both almost at once. I gave up, at the time, and went with the underrated (but not without some issues) Nokia 6 2017. My phone in between the first Shamu and the Nokia was a Samsung Note 5, and I resented Samsung's control over the UI and software the entire time I owned it. The Nokia pleasantly came the closest to a Nexus experience that I'd had after the Nexus 6.

After a year and a half of wear and tear to the Nokia, I decided to upgrade, and, on a whim, tried one more time to get a decent Nexus 6. This time I went for a refurbished model at a little over $130. Surprisingly, the screen is perfect. No burn-in or discoloration, and the AMOLED screen when not pestered by problems is impressive! The rest of the device showed slight signs of use, but no damage. It came packaged in a generic box without plastic sleeve or screen protection, and a charger that is different from the original rapid charger I got with my original.

Initially I did meet with some problems, mostly around another Achille's Heel with this device: random reboots. My original model had this issue towards the end of its use. Oddly, this one only had the issue when on the charger (or any charger). I factory reset the phone, which lessened the problem but did not eliminate it. I suspected the battery was the issue, and found a suggested fix which involved recalibrating the battery level by rebooting into the "bootloader logs" mode and restarting.

Subsequently I also went about rooting the phone and installing LineageOS 15.1, a stable custom ROM. That process involved several factory resets through the recovery software, so I can't say for certain whether the bootloader calibration trick or the whole rooting process was the solution, but my phone runs very stable now, and looks and acts pretty much like a new phone. Snapdragon's 805 processer is still pretty good, despite being a 32-bit quad-core from 2014. Definitely better than the 430 powering my Nokia 6, although you can tell the 430 is easier on battery life, and rarely if ever heats the Nokia device. The Nexus 6 can get pretty warm under heavy use.

Now I have a great phone back, and it has satisfied my nostalgia for the Nexus factor, even though I'm not running Android 7.1.1 with October 2017's security update (the most up-to-date that this device got). The Trebuchet launcher in LineageOS is just like pure Android, with a few extra available tweaks. One funny thing is that the ROM enables the RGB LED notification lights that were built into the device but could not be enabled at all with stock OS. Now, they're enabled but can't be customized.

Since this is still an older device, there are a few things that should be done differently. Chief is to treat the battery gently. This one shouldn't really be left on charger overnight (a bad habit I have), and ideally for longevity shouldn't be charged much more than 80% and shouldn't be run close to 0%. I may or may not keep running this as a daily driver for a long while, but it's robust enough to be relied on for that level of usage. Your results may vary, as experience has taught me!
