Movements In Concert

Some bands take a few albums to find their footing. Not the California-based Movements, which emerged fully formed on their debut 2016 EP, Outgrown Things, and 2017 debut full-length, Feel Something. Both releases align well with the modern post-hardcore movement, with their rumbling guitar abrasions and vocalist Patrick Miranda's agonized screams. Their soul-searching lyrics, though, touch on depth-filled topics — family, mental health, and finding your place in the world — that resonate deeply.

But although Movements' musical approach certainly reveals them to be fans of kindred sonic spirits Balance & Composure, Pianos Become Teeth, and La Dispute, they're also unafraid to be adventurous. Exhibit A: the acoustic-based, delicate midtempo ballad "Fever Dream," and Miranda's penchant for anguished speak-singing, which puts an exclamation mark on the band's thoughts.

Miranda started Movements after dropping out of college — an aspiring documentary filmmaker, he was studying at art school — and deciding that music was more his calling. Things moved quickly after he demoed several songs and linked up with like-minded collaborators; in fact, Movements released a single, "Protection," via Bandcamp in January 2015 and signed with Fearless Records on the strength of their first-ever live show, a March 2015 gig opening for Have Mercy at Anaheim's Chain Reaction. (In a potentially career-changing twist, the band initially missed seeing an email from Fearless' A&R rep.)

The release of Feel Something has only cemented Movements' live skills. Miranda in particular is a mesmerizing frontman who stands at the mic and throws his heart and soul into singing, his gravelly voice exuding emotion. Thanks to this approach, the band has toured Southeast Asia, criss-crossed the U.S., and been on the Vans Warped Tour. Going forward, the musicians are committed to maintaining this hefty touring schedule. Movements nabbed a spot opening for Mayday Parade and the Wonder Years in the U.K., as well as appearances at 2019 festivals Welcome to Rockville, Sonic Temple Art + Music Festival, and the Epicenter Festival.

    Really disappointed

by Claudia on 4/15/24The Paramount - Huntington

The first 2 acts were great! The venue was really nice too and from my view (the skybar) I was really excited to see Movements. Sadly the lead singer was sick so they had substitutes for many of the songs. The worst part - they didn’t even cover a lot of songs! It was like 7 songs total when I know they’ve done 22 in other places. Just felt like they cheated us. They should’ve cancelled altogether for another day instead of giving us a bad concert.

    Bad Karaoke

by Liv on 4/15/24The Paramount - Huntington

Opening bands were fine, nothing special. When it came for Movements to go on, someone came out and said Patrick was sick and lost his voice and couldn't sing, that other people would fill in for the songs. The guitarist sang a bit, and he was fine. He tried his best and thankfully knew all the words. They should have kept him singing. Then they brought out a bunch of other random people to sing. It was awful. Not a clue who they were. Two guys didn't know any of the words and it was just bad karaoke. I wish they had canceled this event. I have never experienced a band do this. I was so excited to see this band, I drove 3 hours for this. It was such bs and so upsetting. If they knew he was sick they should have canceled it. How can they replace the main lead singer? With a bunch of random people who don't know the songs. Most of the crowd was very upset. Never again.

    More Emotion Live than Expected

by Bo on 4/11/24The Ritz - Raleigh

Even though I wasn't familiar with every song that was played. You could still feel the emotion coming from the performances. It was even stronger with the songs that everyone knew.

The best band you will ever see live!

by Summer G on 4/11/24The Ritz - Raleigh

They go above and beyond to ensure their fans are having a good time. Even when they are sick they are performing and giving it their all. The kindest band you will ever meet and the most talented. From Pat's vocals to Spencer's drumming; this band will make you a fan for life.

    Honestly? Meh

by Dal on 4/11/24The Ritz - Raleigh

I wasn't expecting 4 bands, so that was awesome! Parish, Webbed Wing, Tigers Jaw, then Movements. I rate it a 3 because the energy was just not there, from the crowd and the performance. I don't feel like I wasted my time or money, but was expecting more. However, I went ape when Movements played Cherry Thrill (was not expecting that at all, one of my favs). Thanks to the bands!!
