Lizzie Nichols has a problem: she can't keep anything to herself. And when she opens her big mouth on a trip to London, her good intentions get her long-distance beau, Andrew, in major hot water. Now she's stuck in England with no boyfriend and no place to stay until the departure date on her nonrefundable airline ticket. Fortunately, Lizzie's best friend and college roommate, Shari, is spending her summer catering weddings in a sixteenth-century château in southern France. Who cares if Lizzie's never traveled alone in her life and only speaks rudimentary French? She's off to Souillac to lend a helping hand!
One glimpse of gorgeous Château Mirac—and of gorgeous Luke, the son of the château's owner—and Lizzie's smitten. But thanks to her chronic inability to keep a secret, before the first cork has been popped Luke hates her, the bride is in tears, and Château Mirac is on the road to becoming a lipo-recovery spa. Add to that the arrival of ex-beau Andrew, who's looking for "closure" (or at least a loan), and everything—including Lizzie's shot at true love—is in la toilette . . . unless she can figure out some way to use her big mouth to save the day.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2006In Meg Cabot's latest novel, we meet Lizzie Nichols, a recent almost college graduate who is traveling to England to stay with her boyfriend, Andrew. Lizzie, who is a bit of an airhead, is head over heels in love and is looking forward to spending a quality month with her beloved before returning to her hometown while he finishes his last semester of school and she looks for a job with her history of fashion degree. Imagine her surprise when she's met at the airport by Andrew and his father and discovers that her month of love will take place in the family home because Andrew doesn't have a real job and has moved back in with his parents. Add his desperate need for money to the mix and Lizzie finds herself heading to France to visit her best friend and her boyfriend who are staying at a chateau. And of course there is a hot young guy there and Lizzie, with her incessant talking, spills her guts to the guy, leading her off on a crush and many adventures among the rich and showy.
This is a very light book, perfect for summer reading. Cabot has a very engaging style, and her characters are often funny and imperfect. Lizzie's not a deep thinker by any means, and her ability to fall in and out of love will make a normal person's head spin. Still, this book keeps you turning the pages and enjoying the trip. Definitely recommended for beach reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2007This is my favorite Meg Cabot novel to date. The characters are endearing and real, and I can't wait for the sequel!
Lizzie Nichols has just graduated college...sort of... and is on her way to spend the summer with her boyfriend, Andy, (whom she hasn't seen in months) in London. But once she gets there she finds out that things, and Andy, aren't exactly as they had seemed. She soon finds herself on a train to France, spilling her guts to the stranger sitting next to her. The very understanding, gorgeous, stranger sitting next to her. But that's okay, because once she gets off the train, all those embarrassing revelations will go with her, and she never has to see him again...
So why did he follow her off the train? And why is he offering her a ride to her destination? Pick up this book and find out! You will not be dissapointed!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2007I have to admit that by the time I finished The Queen of Babble, I was more than a little disappointed with it. Sure, I read it with some sense of enthusiasm, because it's a quick, easy, and light read, as I knew it would be, but overall I just didn't feel very invested in this book. There was no need to keep reading to see what would happen -- I pretty much knew exactly how it would end from at least a third of the way in -- but I did want to keep reading to see just exactly what "situations" Lizzie would get herself into.
However, putting the silly-but-readable plot aside for a moment, the book was flawed from the very beginning for me. As a main character, Lizzie didn't seem to have very many redeeming qualities - if any? She very much lacks a backbone and she quite apparently lacks some respect for herself and, due to such, she certainly didn't garner any respect from me. She was too naïve for her own good and at a lot of times her actions were downright annoying. At many times, I wanted to smack Lizzie's character through the pages (though a difficult task it would be) for her silliness, especially her actions regarding her boyfriend Andrew and her actions that led to her not having graduated college. Her bad relationship decisions in many ways reminded me, very unfortunately, of the times I watched some of my friends make the same silly decisions for people who definitely weren't worth it. And it's hard enough to take in real life; I hardly want to read a book with a character that constantly puts herself in similar situations. At times I seriously wondered why the other characters in the book would even continue to put up with her annoying behavior. Quite honestly, I probably only kept reading because Luke seemed dreamy, as did the idea of the chateau in general, and the interaction between Chaz and Shari seemed more believable and enjoyable to me than Lizzie's interactions with any other character or, quite frankly, even with herself.
I have to pause because I don't mean to completely tear down this book. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. I was merely a little confused because I have (almost) always enjoyed Meg Cabot's other books. However, it seems to me that she has gotten further and further from the original stories of hers that I so loved - Boy Meets Girl and The Boy Next Door. The Size 12/Size 14 books deviated from that format, but I at least still found the mysteries to be drawing enough to enjoy. However, this most recent book seems to have crossed a little over the line into the category of silly, and that's what I find to be disappointing.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020I love Meg Cabot and will re-read this book until I die, the main character Lizzie is relatable, funny, and smart.
It's a quick read with a fun plot, and the rest of the series is great too!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2024This was hilarious but what a mess Lizzie manages to get into with her mouth running off but even though things get messy it does fix itself somehow. Lizzie does end up getting something more than she expected and what a great finish. Really enjoyed this book. Not sure what took me so long to read it. 😁
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2015This book took off a little slow, but grabbed my attention. I was a big fan of meg cabot as a teen and it went right into my adulthood. Her books never fail me and always provide a good laugh. I love that this book moves around a lot but is able to accommodate all the characters. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019I had no idea what to expect of this novel, having loved the Heather Wells series and wanting MORE, I picked this up and loved it.
A fairy tale classic with great characters and a fabulous setting, if you enjoy Ms Cabot you should read this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great holiday read
Meg Cabot does it again, made me laugh from start to finish as Lizzie travels to England to see her boyfriend only to find hes not all she thought he was and travels to France to meet her friends on holiday where she meets Jean Luc on the train, she believes hes the nicest guy shes ever met until she gets off the train to find he's Luke, Her friends friend who she'll be staying with, and oh wait he has a girlfriend. And Luke is the only person to know Lizzie's inner most secrets. Can she truly trust him?

1.0 out of 5 stars Trop de blabla

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth A Read
Much like all of Meg Cabot's books this is a light and fluffy tale, ideal for young adult. Perfect way to while away an afternoon, funny and sweet Lizzie is the perfect protagonist. Really funny at times, the story really draws you in.
