- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2015After having an original 3DS many years ago, I picked one of these up after hearing good things about it and I have to say, it's a much nicer system than the original 3DS.
Pros -
The extra processing power is noticable when switching menus and loading up applications.
The "Super Stable" 3D is very good and hardly ever loses its focus on you.
Whilst I haven't used them in any games, the C-Stick and ZL + ZR buttons work well in their positions.
Cons - Getting to the Micro SD slot is a chore. I thought it would be quite simple but it is clipped in very hard. I followed the instructions in the manual saying to use the stylus to pry it open but I chipped the console in doing so :(
Also, after putting the battery/Micro SD cover back on, I noticed a sharp edge where the cover and console connect. I'm not sure if it was there before I took it off or not, but it's not very comfortable. (Yes I did make sure I put the cover on properly).
The new slot for the cartridges is rather deep and requires you to push the games in further than on any other Nintendo handheld. This is probably because the slot is on the front and it reduces the chance of the game popping out when you rest the console on yourself.
The last this is the glossy finish. It is an absolute fingerprint magnet! Within about 5 seconds of taking it out of the box it already had marks on it. Why they switched from matte to gloss I will never understand...
Still, despite all my negatives it is still better than the older models.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 April 2015Don't expect massive strides forward from the last XL model but rather expect refinements that give this latest 3DS model another level of polish that makes it the ultimate handheld console.
Should you upgrade? If you have the money spare then it's a no brainer, if you don't then your current 3DS is still absolutely fine.
The biggest thing to note is that this 'new' 3DS will play certain games that the older models couldn't due to having a new CPU but at the moment the only game is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (a fantastic game), if I'm honest I don't expect to see a large amount of exclusive releases but do expect a steady trickle of games that you won't be able to play if you don't upgrade.
The second big feature is the inclusion of the analogue nub which acts like a second analgoue stick offering better control for camera and such in games that allow use of it and also can be used in older games that utilised the Circle Pad Pro such as Resident Evil Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3 3D.
There are also now two more shoulder button in ZR and LR.
Another key feature is the 3D is a lot more steady than previous models meaning you now feel much more comfortable playing in 3D than before if you desire.
Overall the console feels a much more solid machine, very sturdy and feels and looks more expensive than the previous XL.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2015An acceptable improvement from the old 3DS XL.
This version has features not present on the old model, such as 3D-headtracking and auto-brightness, meaning the console will automatically adapt it's 3D and lighting to compensate for movement. The auto-lighting doesn't work particularly great, but the 3D-headtracking works brilliantly. The metallic texture of the console feels much smoother and pleasant as opposed to the regular 3DS XL's cheap-ish plastic feel.
Other differences of mention are that the option to toggle wireless communications is no longer present as a switch on the console itself, but is accessed through one of the menus. The home button has been made smaller, and the start and select buttons have been moved to the side, below the A-B-X-Y buttons. The power button has been moved to the underside of the console along with the stylus holder. The charging port and headphone slot are now in the middle of the console, on the top and bottom respectively, and the game cartridge slot is on the lower-left of the console, which can cause some confusion, as it is possibly the first DS-style console that has this feature apart from the regular New 3DS.
Bigger changes of note include are the fact that there are now 2 extra shoulder buttons. These do not have many functions currently, as few games support them, but it can be safely assumed that more will be coming soon. Also, there is the addition of a small circlepad-like feature above the A-B-X-Y buttons. On first inspection, it can feel very stiff or even broken, however this is not the case; it is simply and intentionally sensitive, so that little pressure is needed to move the stick. This can be easily tested by using it on the main menus. Finally, there is no longer a slot for an SD card, as there is a MicroSD indirectly 'built in' to the system, which can only be removed by removing the back of the console with a philips screwdriver. The console comes with a 4GB MicroSD card pre-installed, so unless you intend to fit a bigger one or cannot use system transfer wirelessly, there is no reason to remove it. The console itself also has better overall processing, which means faster load times for the system and games.
On the subject of system transfer, there are 3 options; Wireless Transfer which transfers all data, Wireless Transfer to Smaller microSD Card, which transfers the majority of content and allows most other content to be easily redownloaded, or transfer through a computer via SD cards, which I am unfamiliar with. Be warned that if the 3DS you are transferring from has a higher capacity SD card than the target 3DS, you may only be able to use the latter 2 options. However I used the regular wireless transfer option with no issues whatsoever.
In conclusion, I'd say it's definitely worth the price if you have the money to spare, but if not then the regular 3DS will suffice for now.
P.S. This product does not come with a charger.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2016I had been using the 3DS since 2012 and never upgraded to te XL version because it felt kind of pointless. So when i saw Nintendo announce the NEW 3DS XL i was highly intrigued. I took my time to buy it, read reviews and finnaly ordered it.
And i must say, it by far exceeded my expectaions! The huge screen, the comfy feeling when you hold it and the new 3D face tracking that stops me from getting dizzy are all features that i really appreciate. I also love that they made a big home button in the middle, moved the game cartrige place to the bottom (same as the stylus). The X Y A B buttons are a lot more "clicky" and firmer, which for me is a plus.
--------------
IN CONCLUSION
The NEW 3DS XL is a wonderful device and perfect for newcomers and people who are upgrading from older Nintendo handheld consoles. Might not be the greatest upgrade from a 3DS XL, but even then i think it's a good long-term investment.
Score: 10/10

1.0 out of 5 stars Fehlerhafte Lieferung und Schlechte Qualität
