Types of Live Christmas Trees
All Christmas trees are considered conifers but are divided into a few distinct groupings. The most distinct are pine, spruce and fir.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between types of evergreens, so here’s a quick guide. If needles are on the branch in groupings of two to five, it’s a pine. If needles attach individually, roll it between your fingers. If the needle is flat and doesn’t roll, it’s a fir. If it does roll easily, it’s a spruce. Caring for Fresh Christmas Trees
Bringing a live tree home doesn’t have to be daunting, especially if you’ve never cared for one before.
If your tree arrives before you’re ready to decorate, store it in an unheated area, like a garage or a covered porch, with the cut end submerged in water.
When you’re ready to place your tree, it’s recommended to trim the stump prior to placing it in the tree stand. This clears away any sap that developed while in storage. Sap on the trunk blocks water absorption and makes it difficult to maintain a fresh, green Christmas tree full of robust, healthy needles.
Once you move your tree indoors, water it daily — maintaining several quarts of water in your tree stand. Some people use additives that are rumored to keep your Christmas tree alive and thriving, but we recommend plain water.
