The bike is making my son really happy, and we're pleased with the purchase. It's sturdy, speedy and, as I write this, is being passed among the neighborhood children for some laps around the block. It's a solid value for the money. Children at this stage won't be on it forever, so I expect it will more than survive rough play and make it through until we're ready for a larger size.
The box was beaten up pretty good upon delivery and unboxing it we started to notice discrepancies right away. The seat already had a small tear in it first of all, then as we started putting it together the front forks were so bent that it wouldn’t fit over the axle. The bent forks couldn’t just be the result of poor handling during shipment as they aren’t just compressed inwards as if it got smashed, they are also twisted and don’t line up straight which appears to be the result of welding them in the wrong position. I managed to bend them out with a small car jack and then I had to use some big pliers to twist then ends to line up right. Once I finally got the wheel on the forks and gave it a spin I noticed how bent the front rim was.
We got the seat and pedals on just fine then we mounted the handle bars and aligned them straight with the front wheel but again due to the poor quality of the forks you can easily see the forks aren’t straight still. I set the handle bars height for best reach then tightened up the brake levers for best comfort. As with any new bike it is expected to need adjustments for the brakes which was easy. The front brake cable comes unconnected to allow easy install of the front wheel but it was easy to setup and adjust. The back brakes didn’t require anything except a small adjustment to tighten up a little more with the set screw.
At this point I let my son take it for a test ride and he seemed to really like it so far. I knew the derailleur still needed to be adjusted but that didn’t prevent his first test ride.
The upper and lower limits on the derailleur need to be set and there’s not adjustment for the tension. The cable also needs to be adjusted and set screws at both ends. The description mentions easy shift however that is not the case here. When going from 1-7 gears it is easy to shift but trying to go back from 7-1 gears it requires a lot of force to twist the grip shifter. I fought with it for a few hours trying to adjust it in anyway possible to try and loosen up the shifter but no matter what it remains too hard to twist for my son and even for me. When I detach the cable the grip shift is better leading me to believe that’s not the cause. Operating the derailleur with my hand isn’t hard and seems to move as expected but it could possible be a little less tight which again can’t be adjusted. I believe there’s a mismatch between the type of grip twist and derailleur combo that needs to be addressed so he can finally shift back to the easier gears.
All in all I paid $150 for the bike and at that price I am disappointed at the results. It is a good looking bike and my son still loves his big boy bike but for lack of knowing any better he is happy with it. If I had to buy this bike again I wouldn’t pay half the price of it due to the amount of effort it required. I would rather go to Walmart and spend my money there then pay the price for this bike again.
I will try and buy a new shifter to see if I can make it easier for him to shift and hopefully it doesn’t require a different derailleur as well. I look forward to being able to go on rides with him and hopefully it doesn’t require more wasted time trying to make it easier for him to shift.
