EDEN In Concert
When Jonathan Ng announced that he'd change the name of The Eden Project to simply EDEN, all of the dates on his subsequent 2016 End Credits tour sold out in a week. Cities from New York to Toronto to Los Angeles and his native Dublin would witness the first step in Ng's big leap from The Eden Project's electronic-leaning sound into the more stripped-down, vocal-based EDEN, and it certainly stuck. The Irish singer and multi-instrumentalist makes his live set feel expansive even though it began with just him, a guitar, keyboards, and a sampler enacting his passionate productions. Remnants of his EDM past remain, but in more organic fashion as he's added another multi-instrumentalist to the show. The EDEN live experience is a dark and vibey setup, with smokey red and purple hues lighting the emotive performance. Yet despite a more visceral feel with EDEN, triumphant bangers are still his hallmark, like the show-peaking "Fumes," with its downtempo dubstep hat quickly unfurls into an anthemic sing-along chorus. Ng's subtle Irish accent pokes through in his delivery, and it adds to the endearing and unique qualities that this performer brings to the stage.
EDEN Background
Born in Dublin to a Chinese father and an Irish mother, Jonathan Ng was classically trained on the violin since the age of seven. The now 23-year-old artist has since picked up piano, guitar, drums, and perhaps more importantly, a knack for pushing his music out online to his devoted fan base. Upon leaving behind The Eden Project moniker and becoming EDEN, Ng signed with Astralwerks in 2015 to release his music in conjunction with his own existing label, MCMXCV. Beginning with the double EP, I Think You Think Too Much of Me, EDEN released a total of three EPs with Astralwerks. Ng linked with Universal as well for the release of EDEN's 2018 debut LP Vertigo, which charted around the world including No. 34 on the U.S. Billboard chart.
