This all started when the dryer chewed a hole in a waffle-weave kitchen towel I'd been using for a long time. I belong to Amazon Vine - they send me free stuff to review - and they sent me some free towels. And so I started learning. First of all, there are two sizes of standard kitchen towel: 12x12 "dish towels," which shrink up to 11x11 inches; and 16x28 "tea towels" which would be hand towels in a bathroom. These are tea towels.
I love the cotton and the weave on these towels. They absorb water. You'd expect that's what a towel would do, right? No. Most of the towels I have received do nothing of the kind - they just smear water around. Super annoying. These towels absorb water; then when you hang them up, on your oven handle or refrigerator, they air-dry - I think the coarse weave keeps them from getting nasty or mildewy. The colors are festive - I have these Red ones and Cactus Green, in a kitchen that's beechwood and green marble with mostly red and white appliances - and they look nice, they spruce the place up. And they are sturdy in the wash; they release whatever they've wiped up, the white stays bright and the colors stay fast without fading.
These are a little more expensive than the other towels - the ones that shrink to half their size in the washer; the ones that won't absorb a drop of water no matter how long you press them on top of it; the ones that fade or fall apart after the first wash; the ones that leave a third of themselves in your dryer's lint trap. Well worth it, I say!
