- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 September 2019The historical events that took place. NOTE : I think the author forgot to mention more often the brutal killings that the Mau Mau did?*
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 November 2017Despite its five year duration the Kenya insurgency is one of the least written about post-WW2 conflicts. In this comprehensively researched book, author Nick van der Bijl sets out the causes and consequences of the rebellion.
The book begins with a helpful history of Kenya and its colonisation. The emergence of the Mau Mau threat is tracked through a series of well researched incidents and the shockwaves that resonated from the deaths of the first white civilians. The build-up of the security forces and the raising of the Home Guard are documented with the roles and responsibilities outlined of the police and military units, including the renowned King’s African Rifles. The critical role of air power in reconnaissance, supplying forces and bombing is also covered.
The insurgency was a savage war with a relatively low number (32) of European civilian fatalities compared to more than 800 Africans. African armed forces also bore the brunt of the military casualties with 524 killed compared to 63 Europeans. By contrast Mau Mau fatalities are estimated at more than 11,500.
Eligible personnel, both British and colonial, received the Africa General Service Medal with “Kenya” clasp, some 35 years after the last clasp for “Somaliland 1920”, bringing to an end Britain’s last “war” in Africa, the 1980 Rhodesia Medal being awarded for peacekeeping in the run up to the elections.
This is a fairly comprehensive analysis told largely from the British perspective. As a chronological account of the insurgency, events are recounted as they occurred so the narrative does occasionally hop between different locations. But that is a small gripe in an otherwise very readable book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2021The title suggests that the book is about the emergency in Kenya, commonly known as the Mau Mau rebellion or uprising. Yet it seems more like a compendium of every small detail of the military units involved in the conflict as much as about the conflict itself. One example, amongst many:
"Then 51 Company RASC arrived from Palestine and used tank transporters to move heavy plant vehicles, and 4 Armoured Brigade Company, consisting mainly of National Servicement from Palestine, kept the project supplied with deliveries from Mombasa, using the AEC Militant six-wheel 10-ton truck nicknamed 'Milly'. Later, 242 Company, also from Palestine, replaced 51 Company. The Royals (sic) Signals formed the Mackinnon Road Signal Troop from 7 (Lines of Communication) Signals to support the project..." and so on ad nauseum.
If insight into the emergency is sought, including objective consideration of the politics and injustices, I suggest 'Histories of the Hanged: Britain's Dirty War in Kenya and the End of Empire' by David Anderson. The only thing this book is good for is sending a person to sleep.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2021A most boring book, only of interest to people obsessed with military stuff.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 July 2019Arrived promptly, not too big or heavy so was perfect for my suitcase. Bought as a gift for my husband as there's a picture of his father in it, my husband is very happy with it, but hasn't read it yet so can't tell you if it's well written yet .
