It comes with screws to be attached to the desk so you could leave it off.

When it comes in the box it is off, so I guess if you wanted to you don't have to put it on. I would have to say though the blue organizer is very handy and you don't gain any desk space with it off.

You can skip installing that piece. But I think its handy for markers.

My granddaughter loves this product. Only wish they had the paint cups like in the picture but over all it's great and sturdy.

Very pleased with this art desk. My grandson loves it, his Dad says he is spending more time being "creative". My grandson likes to organize things so this lets him organize his supplies. He is 3 1/2 and big for his age, very tall but he seems real comfortable with the dimensions of the desk.

My 2 year old son is very happy with this product. He now has a special place to do his art work. The assembly was easy. He has a place to put crayons, markers, etc. The top of the desk also lifts up and has a cubby hole to hold his coloring books and other supplies. The desk isnt too big either, I live in an apartment and fits in the living room nicely.
