About

Indie-rock outfit Liars was formed in 2000 as a result of a "musicians wanted" ad posted in a New York City record store. Their unique sound was derived from a marriage between synth pads/programmed drums to the fundamental guitar-bass-drums formula of punk rock. Their first album, They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, was released in 2001 and produced in just two days by engineer producer Steve Revitte (Beastie Boys, Lee "Scratch" Perry). In 2004, inspired by experimental electronica music as well as German witchcraft folklore, the band released their second album They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. Not a band to remain stylistically static, Liars' 2005 release, Drum's Not Dead, once again marked a major musical shift that the band likens to "Brian Wilson's wilder sonic journeys, or Radiohead's embrace of experimental abstraction." Drum's Not Dead is also a highly ambitious and groundbreaking work in that it involves a "cinematic sister project"--36 short films (three for each track) to be included on the standard album CD.

    Amazing...

by rmcintos on 6/24/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

LIARS were absolutely incredible. Their new album played live sounded so tight and solid. Their older songs we're still just as hard, heavy and dark.

The only thing that was terrible about the Liars was the sound. I have never been to any concert that was as loud as this one. I have seen the Liars before and had not experienced this problem before. My ears were still ringing a day after the show which made me feel awful about the extent of my hearing loss. I wish I didn't attend in order to save my hearing. What a disappointment.

    Solid If Not Short Show

    by Cre8ter on 7/24/10Bottleneck - Lawrence

Liars really rocked the Bottleneck Friday night playing several songs from each of their CD releases. They really brought it but the show (including encore) lasted only 75 minutes. The encore consisted of just two songs. Would I go again? Yes. But they need to give us at least 90 minutes for the $14 we paid.

    Animals

    by lauramarie23 on 7/18/10Magic Stick - Detroit

Liars are animals. Rocked my and every other persons face off. They definitely gained some new fans at the show. Interesting opening act - new age mixing and computer shiz. Loved it.

    Rightful Good Time

    by Chaz38 on 7/15/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

Displaying a full ripe cup of base and drum driven lyrical prose, Liars put on a well balanced set of tunes. Ranging their set list from all albums, the audience couldn't deny shaking their bodies and heads to the beat of, "blood, blood, blood." And I would like to add, the sound system was set at a powerful but not too loud decimal for my ears did not ringing or go numb from days like many First Ave shows tend to cause them to do.

    The Conquering Heroes Return!

by PrincessLoveCanoe on 4/19/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

It was great seeing the Liars back in Williamsburg, and their set included some classics from their last few albums plus the new stuff. They even did two encores! Amazing show, and the energy was high. There was plenty of moshing and crowd surfing on the main floor of Music Hall. For years, they have been a favorite live act, and they keep outdoing themselves. If you love their music, you have to see a Liars show. Get a poster from Tara McPherson afterward.
