Wage War in Concert

Wage War are the kind of hard rock band that isn't easily categorized. That starts with their influences: Although the band's chugging riffs and jackhammering drums take cues from modern music's heaviest names (including Slipknot, August Burns Red, and As I Lay Dying), the group are also known for pairing contrasting inspirations. Their brutal grooves often fuse hip-hop and metal in the way Korn is known for doing, and frontman Briton Bond's gruff, gravelly voice alternates with the more pristine melodic approach of guitarist/vocalist Cody Quistad.

Bond, Quistad, and guitarist/vocalist Seth Blake originally formed Wage War in Ocala, Florida, in 2010 under the moniker Empires. The trio, which was then working with a different rhythm section, even released an EP in 2011, The Fall of Kings.

After some lineup shuffling, the band changed their name in 2013 and, two years later, signed a deal with Fearless Records. Wage War's 2015 full-length debut for the label, Blueprints, and the 2017 album Deadweight were both co-produced by Andrew Wade and A Day to Remember's Jeremy McKinnon.

Deadweight especially illustrates their progression as a band, as it boasts more confident, emotional songwriting and variety in dynamics. In fact, Wage War continue that soul-searching on the 2019 single "Low" — a bruising song about feeling worn down by life — and via the 2018 singles "Johnny Cash (Stripped)" and "Gravity (Stripped)." The latter two are pared-down versions of songs that originally appeared on Deadweight, and they boast chiming guitars, restrained percussion, and delicate vocals.

Live, Wage War stir up ferocious mosh pits courtesy of Bond's commanding stage presence — he directs his low growls directly at the crowd to emphasize vocal power — and aggressive, thrashing playing.

Given this energy, the band are unsurprisingly road warriors who have done several stints on the Vans Warped Tour and opened for Of Mice & Men, August Burns Red, and A Day to Remember. Wage War are now ranked among the genre's biggest heavyweights, with spots in the lineup of the Sonic Temple Art + Music Festival and Welcome to Rockville 2019.

    Separate pit

by Jd on 4/22/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

The over all experience was pretty good wage war put on a good show, the separation of the "pit"was bullshit standing room GA should be that all the way up. first come, but they wanted to Increase sales profits by separating the pit section which was lame anyway we wound up making a bigger pit right behind the gate anyway the drink selection wasn't great either

    Awesome Prescense

by Saavy on 4/22/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

This band has been on my list to see for a couple of years, and I had the awesome opportunity to see them last week. They commanded the stage with such presence even though it was pouring down rain. They sounded identical live as they do on album. If you get the chance to see them, I highly recommend it!!

Let's Hear it For Nothing More

by Gee on 4/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

Honestly, I attended for Norhing More. It was my first time seeing them and I thought they were phenomenal! I just started listening to them a few months ago, and their music and lyrics just grab me. There were points during the concert that I felt myself getting choked up. I'm probably going to catch them in another city, or two! The passion that came off that stage intoxicating. I enjoyed Sleep Theory. I was pleasantly surprised and I would definitely see them headline. Btw, Avondale Brewing is a great venue. I thought the drink prices were reasonable and that pizza was so damn good! The bar and food staff were super friendly.

Solid Show with Good Vibes and Great Sound

by ScatMama on 4/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

First Wage War show. Energy was great. Music and sound was clear. Sick breakdowns. The rain didn’t stop them and actually added to the whole vibe. Can’t beat head banging in the rain. 🤘🏻 Pits went hard. Band was engaging and they played just enough songs. Openers were great too.

    There for the Opener

by TracyDee on 4/20/24The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

I went to the show for the opening band, Nothing More. I thought Wage War was excellent. It is a bit too screamy for me, but they are incredibly talented.

    High Energy

by RecycledDonuts on 4/20/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

From the first note to the last pyrotechnic, Wage War delivered. It has been a long time since I saw people picking pennies and crowd surfing. Excellent.

    Absolutely amazing

by Metalbeast on 4/19/24The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

So I stayed mainly for wage war’s set list and I gotta say it was an awesome time. As far as the spacing of the venue goes, it is honestly fine. Didn’t get a chance to try out the bar service but I’m sure it’s fine. Overall though, concert was great!

    Wage War killed it!!!!

by Rocking J on 4/19/24The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

All the bands were great. The sound was a little distorted where we were but it was close to the front. Very good show.
