About

Liza Anne in Concert

Hailing from tiny St. Simons Island off the Georgia coast, Elizabeth Anne Odachowski has been refining her sound since 2014, when — at 19 years old — she released her debut, the folk-tinged ‘The Colder Months.' The singer-songwriter has been constantly reshaping her sound since then, working with longtime collaborator Zachary Duke to expand her sonic palette and dig into her feelings.

Her third album, ‘Fine But Dying,' which she and Duke recorded at La Frette studio outside Paris, dives into slightly harder-edged folk-pop while also ratcheting up the lyrical gravity. On opener "Paranoia" she channels the yelp of Paramore's Hayley Williams amid skeletal rock that explodes into Technicolor bursts, while "Panic Attack" is a harrowingly up-close description of anxiety that takes on distortion as its emotional intensity increases ("this feels like hot summer night in a turtleneck," she coos at one point), eventually crouching into a calming mantra. It's an intense listen, and even more so live, where she frankly discusses the real-life scenarios that led to her songwriting, creating a bond between performer and audience that resonates far beyond the last chord fading out.

Liza Anne released a cover of The Cranberries' gauzy "Dreams" in August, honoring the January 2018 passing of singer Dolores O'Riordan with a version that heightens the original's ethereal feel while paying homage to O'Riordan's inimitable spirit. "I never got to see her perform this song," Liza Anne said in a statement, "but its existence gave me a hint towards what I wanted to do with my voice and my mind and my body and the time that I stay alive."

In the fall of 2018, Liza Anne tours with Ray LaMontagne, and she's been tapped to open a few U.S. shows for country-pop shape-shifter Kacey Musgraves in early 2019. Her radical honesty and elliptical songwriting make her a spellbinding live act, and an artist to watch as the years go by.
