- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2020I enjoyed reading this, especially as the protagonist, Zoë, did not make me want to slap her out of irritation!
Zoë is an Irish girl living in London who hopes to become a fashion buyer for a popular department store. When we meet her, she’s nursing a broken heart for a promising relationship, and mourning ‘The One’ who got away. Amazingly, through a chance encounter, she gets a another chance to do things over, and do them right this time. The book follows Zoë’s do-over encounters with friends her friends as she discovers that sometimes, a second chance doesn’t give you the happy-ever after you imagined it would, even when you do and say all the right things.
I’ve often wondered how I would use my own second chance, if time ever happened to rewind itself.
It will make an enjoyable summer read, and is also quite suitable for a windy, wet, and cold evening, in my case. I don’t think you’ll regret reading it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2015Months on from her breakup with surgeon David, and Zoe Kennedy is still heart-broken; blaming herself for having messed up the best relationship she's ever had. However, when she wakes up one morning and finds that somehow she's gone back six months in the past, she's determined not to make the same mistakes again. This time round Zoe is going to be the perfect girlfriend and keep David; what's more she's also going to use the whole time travel thing to her advantage at work and try to get the promotion she never got last time. The question is will Zoe be happier second time round?
This is a fun and easy story; the time travel plot getting going quite quickly, such that as a reader you're soon drawn in. I would say you probably need to be the type of reader who won't be too ground down with the how's and why's of the time-travel element, but rather just go along with it and enjoy exploring the opportunities and dilemmas it poses. With hindsight we all wish we could sometimes go back and change things; but as Zoe slowly discovers, it might not always necessarily be a good thing, though certainly the consequences make for a fun read. In some chapters Doherty directly outlines what happened first time round for Zoe and then contrasts this with second time round, however, she generally manages to avoid becoming repetitive.
The plot has several strands, as well as Zoe's relationship with David, there's plenty of drama with her work, which provides a lot of humour; as well as her relationship with her friends and new flatmate Max. Zoe as a character was charmingly flawed, though did learn from her mistakes. David, though not the perfect boyfriend, was perhaps a little more likeable than I was expecting; albeit clearly not very well suited to Zoe. In fact the only truly unlikeable character was Jenny, David's best friend and the third person in their relationship; though in the end I did almost feel a little sorry for her too. I loved Max and thought he was just adorable.
I thought the book was great in exploring how Zoe slowly learnt how the things she thought she wanted perhaps weren't right for her after all; with plenty of humour and colourful characters. As Zoe works in the fashion industry, Doherty does give a lot of descriptions about what people wear and such; I thought this was sometimes overdone, for example I really didn't need all the items of Zoe's make up kit described as often as they were.
Also I personally found the ending a bit of a let down; the penultimate chapter had things coming together all just too quickly and then the very last chapter for me was disappointing, though I appreciate it was always going to be a tricky one.
All in all a light and easy read to escape into.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2017I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was nice and easy to read, and quite difficult to put down. I've read a few Nichola Doherty books now, and love her style of writing. I would have given this 4 and a half stars if I could, but doesn't appear Amazon will allow this, but definitely didn't want to go as low as 4 stars. Only reason I mention this is because some aspects of the story line were a little too 'silly' & 'cheesy' but I suppose this is what makes the book fun :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2017I lived the characters & the gist of the story, I just didn’t like the going backwards part ... funny & well written just not a fan of time travel!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2015I really enjoyed the story very imaginative, funny and quirky. I found Zoey the main character true to life, but struggled with some of the other characters. I would have liked more of an explanation as to why Jenny hung around and also why David allowed her too. She seemed to hold something over him but it was never explained. Nevertheless it was a lovely story with a good ending.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2017Very easy to read and likeable characters. The main character is not perfect which is nice because it immediately lets you connect with her. She has "normal" relationships with her friends and isn't above a good bitch either! The eventual hero is fab and normal, in that he is an intelligent slob, but with a perfect bod, don't we all wish for a man with brains, looks and passion!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable
I really enjoyed reading this book. The main character Zoe is very likeable and the chemistry between her and Max really comes across. It‘s romantic, funny and I couldn‘t put it down!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very annoying book.
I cannot recommend this book for any reason whatsoever. The writing is unremarkable, though the story is mildly interesting , but the CONSTANT teenage-girly descriptions of EVERY SINGLE PERSON'S clothing in EVERY SINGLE SCENE are just plain annoying! Don't read this book unless you're a 20-something fashion-obsessed airhead.

2.0 out of 5 stars A book to forget
It's not that it isn't an enjoyable book, but I couldn't stop the nagging feeling that I wished to reach the end fairly quickly. It's one of those books, which you can't find significant weaknesses to criticise, yet at the same time can't find much good to say about it either. So Zoë went back to the past to set things right with her ex-boyfriend, and found herself falling for someone else instead. But I didn't really see what's wrong with his boyfriend, other than that they weren't suited for each other in the first place. Does it really need to take a whole book for her to work it out? And the whole series of mishaps at work were unnecessary to the story and not really believable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much fashion detail.
This is probably in general not my genre, but the title was irresistible. The text was loaded with every fashion detail, which was neither interesting nor relevant. Plus the plot was too predictable. No resolution of the David-Jenny thing either. Quite disappointing.
