Elevate your everyday HAY collaborates with some of the world's best designers to make good design more readily accessible. The company was founded in 2002 by Rolf and Mette Hay, a husband-and-wife team passionate about designing and producing a wide range of home design items intended to brighten everyday living.
By working with some of the world’s leading and emerging designers, HAY is able to turn thoughtful, unconventional ideas into innovative objects. Through a commitment to the design and production of furniture and accessories with an international appeal, HAY also strives to make good design accessible to the largest possible audience.

Ahead of its time
“Certain products are born in the future,” Italian designer Mario Bellini once said. It was this belief that shaped the Amanta Sofa. Designed in the late ’60s, when Italian design was at the forefront of the global design scene, Amanta balanced industrial precision with bold elegance – a form that earned it a place in MoMA’s permanent collection. Its modular design seemed radical then; now, it feels essential.

All About HAY: Redefining Danish Design
Founded in Copenhagen just two years into the new millennium, HAY was perfectly positioned to redefine Danish design for the contemporary world. And that it did. In the more than two decades since its establishment, HAY has become a global brand with a resume full of innovative partnerships, inventive contemporary designers, and playful, functional products that brighten all aspects of everyday life with good design.
Since HAY's introduction to MillerKnoll’s family of brands in 2018, Design Within Reach is proud to be one of HAY’s official dealers in the US and Canada. A Brief History of HAY
By its establishment in 2002, HAY already had a rich history with Danish design. Founders Rolf and Mette Hay had met when both worked at Gubi, another Copenhagen-based Danish furniture company whose own roots stretched back to the mid-century.
But HAY wasn't created to be just another Danish design brand. Rolf and Mette established HAY as “a new kind of design company,” motivated by the goal to collaborate with world-class designers to craft contemporary furniture, lighting, and accessories at more accessible prices, so good design could be attainable for a broader audience. Design previously wasn’t considered “affordable” – and HAY sought to change that. HAY’s assortment contains products at a wide range of prices, including a vast array of small (yet carefully designed) home accessories including candles, storage boxes, and mugs.
HAY launched its first furniture collection at IMM Cologne in 2003 and opened its first store on Pilestræde in Copenhagen that same year. In the ensuing two decades, HAY would expand throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, partnering with dozens of contemporary designers and artists to launch now-iconic collections. HAY has established itself as a brand to watch in the design space, showcasing its products at Salone del Mobil in Milan, Design Days in Chicago, and 3daysofdesign right at home in Copenhagen.
A definitively current brand, HAY draws design inspiration from present-day cultural moments in art, architecture, and fashion – and frequently collaborates with contemporary brands to create some of those cultural moments, too. Some of HAY’s innovative partnerships include IKEA x HAY (2017), SONOS x HAY (2018), Suicoke x HAY (2020), HAY x Liberty (2023), and ASICS x HAY (2024).
Despite its mostly forward-looking creative direction, HAY also frequently reaches into the past to bring historical furniture pieces back to life, showcasing the brand’s respect for the design icons that came before it. In 2018, HAY joined the MillerKnoll family of brands, offering a fresh, contemporary perspective to a collective of historic mid-century modern design brands including Herman Miller and Knoll. And in 2022, HAY collaborated with Herman Miller to launch Herman Miller x HAY, a collection of classic pieces by Charles and Ray Eames, reimagined in HAY’s signature bright, playful colors.
And still, after more than 20 years, guiding every HAY product launch, from the Dog Collar to the Quilton Sectional, is the goal to furnish everyday life with good design at accessible prices.
