A classic Sonoma Coast release, the 2016 Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards offers perfumed notes of candied cherries, orange rind, rose petals, and sandalwood. I always find the true Sonoma Coast releases to have a rounded, supple texture and that’s certainly the case here. This medium-bodied wine has a silky texture, ripe yet polished tannin, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade. This cuvée comes from two Sonoma Coast sites located 4 miles off the coast and spent 31% new French oak.

Medium ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir Land’s Edge Vineyards reveals a wonderfully expressive nose of pomegranate, red and black cherries and mulberries with touches of rhubarb, forest floor and yeast extract. Medium-bodied, the soft, silken palate has bags of elegance and restraint with red and black fruit layers and earthy accents, finishing with great length.

Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both.
The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of high-personality single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express the distinctive qualities inherent in each vineyard's terroir - the interplay of soil, slope, exposure and climate. The fruit is sourced from the Russian River Valley, Green Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.
The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.
Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
