Mattresses Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to mattresses, one size doesn’t fit all. People are built differently. People sleep differently. We understand this, which is why our range of mattresses offers you a wide choice of materials, support and price levels; everything you need to find a perfect match for you.

How do I choose a mattress?

At IKEA, mattress selection has never been easier. You'll find the most popular mattress types and mattress toppers for your sleeping style, size, and comfort preferences. Do you prefer a firm or medium-firm mattress that feels great to stretch out on, or a soft mattress that you can sink into like a dream?

Choosing a mattress requires you to consider the softness or firmness you prefer, but also what size feels most comfortable, and whether there’s a particular material that helps you sleep well. If you find yourself often waking up with aches or pains, chances are you need a different type of mattress entirely.

To find the right mattress for you, you should think about:

1. Comfort level
We offer a variety of different mattresses. Deciding if you want a firm, plush or medium-firm mattress will help you narrow down your choice considerably.

A firm mattress prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress. A better choice for back sleepers.

plush mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body. A better choice for side sleepers and stomach sleepers.

2. Your budget
We have mattresses to fit every budget—from basic mattresses to mattresses made with high-quality natural materials. But you can be sure that everyone is designed to give you a good night’s sleep.

What is the best mattress to buy?

The best mattress to buy depends on different factors, such as your sleeping position and preferred material.

  • Sleeping position: If you are a side sleeper, we recommend a plush or medium-firm mattress. A softer mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body. For back sleepers, we recommend a firm mattress that prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
  • Preferred material: Choose from our hybrid or foam mattresses. Our hybrid mattresses offer individually wrapped pocket springs that follow your movements and a thick layer of foam for cushioning comfort. Our foam mattresses are soft and resilient, and they spread your body weight evenly to promote restful sleep and better blood circulation.

How much should I spend on a mattress?

How much you should spend on a mattress depends on your budget. We have mattresses to fit every budget—from basic mattresses to mattresses made with high-quality natural materials. But you can be sure that every IKEA mattress is designed to give you a good night’s sleep.

To find a mattress that fits your budget, use the price filter when shopping for a spring mattress or foam mattress.

Are IKEA mattresses in North American sizes?

All IKEA beds, mattresses and bedding sold in Canada are sold in Standard North American sizes. Accordingly, all IKEA beds, mattresses and bed linens can be used with any other North American standard-sized product.

See below the IKEA mattress size dimensions:

  • Twin or Single mattresses – 38" x 75” (97 cm x 189 cm)
  • Full or Double mattresses – 53" x 75" (135 cm x 189 cm)
  • Queen size mattresses – 60" x 80" (152 cm x 202 cm)
  • King size mattresses – 76" x 80" (193 cm x 202 cm)

How long does an IKEA mattress take to completely unroll?

Before using it for the first time, it’s normal for new mattresses to feel a bit too firm, so you should allow one month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body. New materials also have their own particular smell. We recommend airing the mattress to help eliminate any smell. If you buy a roll-packed mattress, you can use it straight away but keep in mind that it takes 3–4 days of use for it to regain its shape.

Does IKEA remove my old mattress?

When you purchase an IKEA mattress and have it delivered, for a small fee we will take your old one away. This service can only be booked directly in-store.

How to clean a mattress?

1. Complement the mattress with a mattress protector or a separate pillow top. It makes it more hygienic, as it is easy to remove and clean. Some mattresses and pillow tops have a washable cover. Read the tag inside the cover for more information.

2. Make sure that the zipper is closed when washing the mattress cover. Vacuuming the mattress helps to remove dust and mites. Use upholstery cleaner to remove stains.

3. If your mattress is turnable you should turn it about every three months. Turning a mattress ensures more even wear and helps to prolong its comfort. Don’t fold the mattress. It can damage the springs and materials inside.

4. Even the best mattresses become less comfortable with age, and all mattresses accumulate dust and mites over the years. So even if the mattresses have a 10-year warranty, we still recommend that you change your mattress every 8-10 years.
