Muhammad has kept his crown for the second year running and Oliver held tight to the runner-up position. Noah jumped three places to take third, joining fellow new entrant Leo in the top five. The pair’s debut at the top of the charts came at the expense of George and Jack who slipped to six and seven respectively.

Only two new entries made it into the top ten. Freddie and Arthur squeezed out Jacob and Oscar. Rising an impressive 18 places Arthur was also a top 20 new entry, along with Henry, Theo, Archie and Thomas. Parents also sent the pet form of Thomas soaring up the charts as the highest chart climber. Tommy, which was tipped by BabyCentre as setting a British bad boy trend, rocketed 50 places to land at number 47.

There was more drama elsewhere as the choices of UK parents caused further upheaval in the bottom half of the chart. Alex flew into number 54 as the highest top 100 new entry while BabyCentre parents shunted Ahmad, a new entry last year at number 53, out of the chart.

Lewis managed to stay in the top 100 but plunged 32 places while classic John soared 41 to claim number 56. Other rapid climbers included Theodore, Carter and Louie while Aaron, Jamie, Toby and Ryan were among the fastest fallers.

Grayson, Sam, Felix, Louis, Jasper and Aayan joined Alex as top 100 new entries this year with Aayan only just squeezing in at number 100. The seven new entries pushed out Syed, Abdul, Parker, Levi, Evan, Joel and, of course, Ahmad.

To capture true popularity, our exclusive baby name data combines names where the pronunciation is the same, but the spelling is different. Using the BabyCentre ‘how does it sound in the playground’ rule, we help you know exactly how popular each name is, even if parents choose to go with a creative spelling. For example, Jackson, Jaxon and Jacson or Louis, Louie and Lewie.
