From Barley to Blarney: A Whiskey Lover's Guide to Ireland Hardcover – April 16, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
An Irish whiskey guru, two bartender behemoths, and an adept writer combine forces to create this comprehensive guide to Irish whiskey. The book begins with an in-depth introduction to whiskey and its history in Ireland, including what makes each style of Irish whiskey unique. What follows is a detailed tour, including photographs, around the four Irish provinces, and of the 22 different distilleries and the unique Irish whiskeys each produces, as well as a discussion of the booming present and promising future for Irish whiskey producers. Each province also highlights the best of Ireland's 50 iconic bars and pubs, linking past to present and providing the ultimate whiskey tourist itinerary. The fun really begins when the masterminds behind 2015’s “World’s Best Bar,” Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog, share 12 original mixed-drink recipes tailor-made for Irish spirits.

Review
(The New York times)
“A sophisticated guide for fans of Irish whiskey. It’s beautifully designed and illustrated . . . I can’t imagine returning to Ireland without a copy tucked away.” (The Wall Street Journal)
"If you knew nothing about Irish whiskey before picking up the book, it doesn’t matter. By the end, you’ll have not only a solid base of Irish whiskey and Irish pub knowledge but also the will and wish to hop on the first jet to Dublin and start your very own journey." (Sam Slaughter, The Manual)
“If you’re a serious Irish whiskey connoisseur, you’ll find plenty to interest you. But if you don’t know about the har stuff, [there is] information on its history and how it’s made. If you’re a devotee of great pubs, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you love a good cocktail, Jack McGarry created 12 original recipes. . . ” (The Irish Times)
“If this was a book that had been done from the desk, as it easily could have been, it might have ended up as a dry encyclopedia that was useful as a reference work but not something you’d read cover to cover. However, by visiting all the pubs and distilleries, and talking to the owners and the experts, each entry is filled with conversation as well as information. The reader hears directly from the distiller or the pub owner, and we all know there’s no conversation like an Irish conversation. All you need is a session of live Irish music playing in the background, and you could be there with them.” (Travel Distilled)
“Irish whiskey is a spirit unto itself, and lovers of Scotch or Bourbon can argue, but Irish whiskey purists know the craic (fun) is in the neat pour with good friends. This book was born from a whiskey guru, two bartender behemoths, to create this comprehensive guide to Irish whiskey.” (Monsters & Critics)
Everyone should have "take a road trip through Ireland" on their bucket list — this is speaking from experience — and for whiskey lovers there’s now a definitive guide: "From Barley to Blarney," written by the founders of the Dead Rabbit. (Eva Kis, Metro New York)

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2022I loved this book. It's a great concept - visiting all of the distilleries on the island of Ireland - and then wring about them in small, easy-to-read chunks that distill (pun intended) down the passion of each distillery in two to four pages each.
Bonus territory is a parallel visit to many, many of Ireland's famous, and not-so-famous pubs. A must for anyone learning about Irish Whiskey or thinking of visiting Ireland.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2020Mu husband and I are currently reading this book, we went to irekand for our honeymoon and visited a few places this book mentioned. This book is inspiring us to return to irekand, stay more than a week and take the same trip across multiple distilleries and pubs as the authors did. This read is insightful, inspiring and freaking funny! It is a must read for any irish whiskey lover.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020Very entertaining and informative. Great writing - you can hear the Irish accent. First I'm going to an Irish pub in the States and drink my way through the chapters one distillery at a time. Then I'm going to Ireland and work my way through the pubs. Wish me luck!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021There are three books about Irish whiskey that I have read:
Irish Whiskey by Collins 2020
The Whiskeys of Ireland by MulRyan 2016
From Barley to Blarney By Muldoon etc 2019
Irish Whiskey is a small paperback that gives the best assessment of various Whiskeys with a brief overview of the distilleries that make them. The whiskey-scape of Ireland is in its renaissance and is basically in its infancy. With the exception of a few, most of the distilleries have begun or resumed production in the last 2-20 years.
The Whiskeys of Ireland is a decent history of Irish Whiskey while this book, From Barley to Blarney, is more of a travel book of the various distilleries and about 50 of the many Pubs in Ireland with lots of pictures and is well produced. However, both of these books spend very little time on the whiskeys that you will find on your local liquor store shelf.
If you want to know more about the Whiskey Industry makeup of Ireland, this is a good book for that purpose. Beware that the whiskey-scape is changing rapidly and is only good up to its date of printing but that can be said for any such book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2020They don't spend nearly enough pages on each distillery, certainly not the big ones. But it is a fun and enjoyable read. I loved the stories behind the owners and history of so many pubs around Ireland. Sadly with so many distilleries popping up in Ireland, this book already feels dated. I think they should go back soon and work on a second edition, or I would be happy to fill in for them!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2021Gave book to husband as gift He is thoroughly enjoying it Quite well written

5.0 out of 5 stars Standardwerk für irischen Whiskey

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising good read
Really great read - a great intro to distilleries and good pubs in ireland - have actually made trips to visit some of the latter based on their mention - really worth it. At the time of writing a lot of distilleries mentioned were just preparing to open - they now are so actually still fairly up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars 🍸 Sur la route du whisky 🍸
