Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Stroller Comparison

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Stroller Comparison

More than 140 years after creating the world's very first baby carriage, Silver Cross—a British brand established in 1877—made its American debut with the Wave, an elegant yet practical stroller that grows with your family.

The Wave is one of the highest-quality double strollers on the market, made with an aluminum and magnesium alloy frame that provides maximum durability and the most premium fabrics you'll find on a stroller.

In 2019, Silver Cross continued its British invasion by adding a second convertible stroller to its lineup, the Coast. However, the Coast has since been discontinued and is no longer available as of 2021.

The Coast similarly expands to a double stroller while addressing parents' two top concerns about the Wave: its price and its weight.

The Silver Cross Coast costs less and is 2.5 pounds lighter than the Wave, making it more accessible for families hesitant to purchase the Wave.

But other families will still choose the Wave, a higher-end stroller with more configurations and included accessories. If the Coast is like the base model of a luxury car, the Wave is the fully-loaded version with all the options.

In this Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast comparison, we'll explain the similarities and differences between the two strollers.

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Stroller Comparison

Silver Cross Wave

The Silver Cross Wave is as durable as it is beautiful. Premium fabrics and handmade details give the stroller a luxurious look, while a high-grade aluminum and magnesium alloy frame make the Wave feel like it will last forever. The Wave comes with several included accessories and can be used as a double stroller right out of the box by combining the toddler seat and bassinet.

Silver Cross released an updated version of the Wave in 2021, reducing the stroller's weight, increasing its weight capacity and adding aesthetic changes. Learn more in this 2021 vs. 2020 Silver Cross Wave comparison.

Silver Cross Coast

The Silver Cross Coast features many of the configurations and high-quality materials of its predecessor, it costs less because it includes fewer accessories and features pared-down detailing. The Coast also weighs less than the Wave, thanks mainly to smaller wheels, a lighter basket and a reduced length of 1.5 inches.

As of 2021, the Silver Cross Coast has been discontinued and is no longer available at Strolleria.

What accounts for the difference in cost? The Wave is a higher-end version of a similar stroller, with premium details that give the stroller a more luxurious look and feel.

To name a few examples of the Wave's attention to detail:

  • The handlebar and bumper bar on the Wave is made with hand-stitched leather, while the Coast's leather details are machine-fabricated.
  • The interior of the Wave bassinet is quilted for a more refined look with additional padding.
  • The Wave bassinet is a thermal-molded unit, making it more solid than the Coast's bassinet that uses a piece of hardpressed cardboard at the bottom.
  • The bassinet mattress for the Wave is ventilated, and it includes two ventilation points on the bassinet bottom for increased airflow.
  • The bottom of the Wave basket is reinforced with heavy-duty plastic, making it more durable.
  • The Wave has additional leather piping and details on the seat and bassinet.

The Wave also justifies its higher price by including more accessories, some of which allow for additional configurations over the Coast.

Both strollers include the following components:

  • Stroller chassis
  • Toddler seat unit
  • 1 canopy
  • 1 bumper bar
  • Bassinet
  • Seat liner
  • Cup holder
  • 1 rain cover
  • 1 bug cover

The Wave also includes these components not sold with the Coast:

  • Tandem adapters enabling the Wave to be used as immediately as double stroller
  • Seat unit apron for toddler seat (similar to lightweight footmuff)
  • Second canopy for toddler seat or bassinet
  • Second bumper bar/handlebar for toddler seat or bassinet
  • Second rain cover for toddler seat or bassinet
  • Second bug cover for toddler seat or bassinet

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Stroller Comparison

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Double Stroller Price

The Silver Cross Wave can be a double stroller right out of the box by using the toddler seat in the upper position and bassinet on the lower position.

That configuration isn't possible with the Silver Cross Coast, as the same canopy is used for both the toddler seat and the bassinet. To use the Coast as a double stroller, you'll need to purchase at least one extra product for the lower position right away—the tandem seat or a lower car seat adapter for a car seat.

For both the Silver Cross Wave and Silver Cross Coast, the lower seat ("tandem seat") is a slightly smaller replica of the upper seat ("toddler seat"), so the two seats can't be interchanged. Unless you're using the stroller as a double only while your youngest is still in a bassinet or car seat, you'll purchase the tandem seat eventually.

        * The Coast bassinet is not sold separately, so the stroller cannot be used with two bassinets for twins.

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Weight and Dimensions

One of the selling points of the Coast is its reduced weight and size: Compared to the Wave, the Coast weighs 2.5 pounds less and is 1.5 inches shorter.

The Wave's larger wheels, made with a thicker type of foam, are responsible for much of the weight difference. Additionally, the Wave has a hard-bottomed basket with double-reinforced plastic, and the seat of the Wave is also made from a thicker material that's heavier than that of the Coast.

Here's a look at the weights and dimensions for both strollers.

Weight (with chassis and one toddler seat)

          • Wave: 30.3 pounds
          • Coast: 27.7 pounds

            Dimensions

            • Wave: 44"L x 24"W x 37-43"H
            • Coast: 43"L x 24"W x 36-43"H

            Folded Dimensions

            • Wave: 38"L x 24"W x 15"H
            • Coast: 37"L x 24"W x 13.5"H

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Weight Capacity

Both Silver Cross strollers offer the same weight capacity: 55 pounds for the upper toddler seat and 45 pounds for the lower tandem seat.

The weight capacity is higher than other tandem strollers with a 35-pound weight limit on the lower seat, such as the UPPAbaby Vista, Thule Sleek or Austlen Entourage. That weight limit is a drawback for families who have a toddler who has outgrown the lower seat but want their newborn to sit near them in the upper position.

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Warranty

Both the Silver Cross Wave and Silver Cross Coast are built to last and have a 3-year manufacturer's warranty with product registration.

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Configurations

The Silver Cross Wave and Silver Cross Coast offer similar configurations for siblings and twins, but the Wave offers two more configurations and requires fewer accessories to be purchased separately.

On both strollers, both seats are reversible, allowing children to face you, face forward or face back-to-back.

For twins, both strollers take two infant car seats, but only the Wave can be used with two bassinets (the Coast bassinet is not sold separately).

For both the Wave and Coast, car seat adapters are sold separately. You can purchase one for the main / upper position of the stroller and one for the lower position of the stroller -  the upper and lower car seat adapters are sold separately for $49 each.

Additionally, the Wave allows for simultaneous use of the toddler seat and bassinet—something that can't be done with the Coast because the two pieces share the same canopy.

Here's a glance at the configurations available for each stroller.

Silver Cross Wave vs. Silver Cross Coast Colors

While both strollers are available in an array of neutral colors, the look of the Coast is a little more edgy compared to the classic elegance of the Wave.

For 2019, the Wave comes in three colors, each of which has a silver chassis and brown leather handlebar and bumper bar (saddle brown for Granite and Sable; darker brown for Slate).

2019 Silver Cross Wave Color Options

The Coast is available in three colors, all of which include a black frame and black leather handlebar and bumper bar. The Coast fabrics feature an overprinted texture that gives the stroller a modern, artistic look.

            Conclusion

With the debut of the Coast, Silver Cross now offers two models that could be described the same way: Both the Coast and Wave are luxury strollers that convert to a double, offering similar configurations, car seat compatibility and style.

Two main differences of the Coast will be undoubtably attractive to new parents: its lower weight and its lower price. But parents who want a top-of-the-line stroller with more detailing and accessories will still value the attention to detail and elegant look of the original Wave.

With either the Silver Cross Wave or the Silver Cross Coast, you're investing in a high-quality stroller that will endure a lifetime of strolling.
