It works well, completely silent, and works fast. I had absolutely issues with it, and have had it for over a year. Still works fine. Poor photo, but there isn't much to it. When it's plugged in and working, a little white light illuminates.

Reliable hard drive

It needed a USB splitter cable to get enough power, as most portable hard drives would, but it's worked well so far.

It's a hard drive, it works as intended

I needed to store some of bigger files somehow. Luckily this portable hard drive was on sale for almost half off, so I went ahead and copped it. The cable is a few inches, but realistically this will always be near your PC. The actual concern is that the port is unique to just this hard drive. That means it can't be easily replaced by another generic USB cable, so don't lose it. This is my first time buying a portable HDD so the cable port thingy might be normal. Also if it asks to download the WD software, you don't need it for this to function normally.

- A:Answer The Mac Operating System uses a different file format system than Windows does. This drive comes formatted for Windows. Thanks to the Time Machine backup program being built into your MacBook, when you connect this drive to your MacBook, after a moment, it will ask you if you want to use this drive with Time Machine. Just select Yes, and your MacBook will take care of formatting the drive for you. Just acknowledge the message that it will erase all data on the drive (there is nothing on the drive when you first buy it anyway, except a couple basic utilities which are not needed), and then your computer does the rest for you.

Q: QuestionDoes this drive use an external power supply or is it powered through the USB cable?

- A:Answer If you're asking whether it uses an AC plug/batteries, then no, just the USB cable. However, the USB cable needs to be connected to a device powerful enough to spin the fan. I tried connecting it to my phone with a dongle (it works on flashdrives), but my phone wasn't powerful enough to spin the fan so it couldn't connect. Other average devices (ie. laptops) will power it just fine.
