    Prometheus Lights Preon P2

The third generation Preon P2 MKIII is AAA battery powered and surprisingly bright. The Preon gives you versatility without unneeded modes.

WHAT'S NEW WITH THE PREON P2 MKIII

User interface: Revamped for better usability and wider appeal to different owners.

Pocket clip: This clip is substantially thicker than previous Preon clips and has better ergonomics.

Body Machining: I opted to remove the grooving from the area underneath the clip to prevent the light from tearing up your pockets.

Tail Cap: The new rubber button solves the issue of accidental activation while remaining functional and feeling solid.

Nichia LED: All Preons feature the lauded Nichia 219C in order to deliver solid output ad 92+ CRI (Color Rendering Index).

Tailcap Switch: The switch is a brand new low-resistance model that allows the Preon to match the lumen output of previous lights (100+ lumens) yet deliver High CRI.

Hybrid Memory: A blend of memory and no-memory, the hybrid configuration saves the last mode used, but reverts to the first mode in the sequence when shifting out of a saved mode.

    NEW USER INTERFACE:

    1. Output in programming mode: 15% (medium)

    2. Bump Protection: <60ms off time, no mode change

    3. Enter configuration menu: 10 cycles within 3 seconds

    4. Mode change interval: .5 seconds

    5. Memory set (off) time: .5 seconds

    6. Memory function: revert to mode 1

    7. Burst Mode Memory: no memory

    8. Burst mode behavior: 30 seconds burst (100% output), ramp to high mode (60%) over next 30 seconds

    WHAT'S UP WITH BURST MODE?

It allows you to access maximum output at any time without scrolling through other modes.

Burst mode is activated with two very fast off/on cycles (.2 second spacing) and does not have mode memory. Burst is active for 30 seconds and then ramps down to high mode over the following 30 seconds.

    Prometheus Lights

Prior to launching Prometheus Lights, Hui designed watches, fly-fishing equipment, retail stores and machine tool accessories. He's built animatronic sharks for a Hollywood special effects studio, worked on the Automotive X Prize and the world’s first high-performance electric motorcycle at Mission Motors. “The world is full of stuff,” says Hui. “As a consumer, I want to buy things that I know someone has cared about and that I know will last. As a designer, maker and strategist, I strive to create products that reflect how I see the world, my values and the way I want to fit into the big picture.”

Below are the six pillars that define what we do.

Authenticity We are passionate about what we do because believe in it. You won't find any marketing hype here because after we are done pouring heart and soul into even the most mundane things, we don't need hype. We let our hard work and end results do the talking. We are driven by a relentless desire to be the best, because if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.
Quality We believe in old fashioned "know it when you see it" quality. When you hold an object of quality in your hands, there is no question. This obsession permeates everything we do, and it is a constant and ever-changing pursuit. Quality begins with our people, is driven by continuous improvement, and ends with the finest tools from around the world. Many improvements we make you'll never notice, but we'll never rest.
Reliability It's no secret we live in an age of disposability, "who cares if it breaks? I'll just buy a new one." That doesn't fly around here because it's counter to my core values. Everything that comes out of this shop is made to last. We have a lot of new machines, but some of our best ones are older than I am. I just bought two machines that were made in the 1940s. We're getting them cleaned up and will put them back to work because they were made the old-fashioned way. That’s how we do.
Refinement The basis for reliability is simplicity & refinement. I don't release new products every 5 minutes, I don't chase trends, & I don't add features just because we can. I strip away everything that is not needed to achieve the goal. The other big lever in achieving reliability is refinement: making the same design better again & again. If you want the latest buzz worthy trend look somewhere else. If you want the finest examples of what people can design & manufacture, welcome home.
Respect Respect is earned by conducting oneself honestly and with decency. You'll note that I have a "don't be a jerk" clause in my policy. I'm joking, but not really. We build relationships with our customers, not transactions. Respect is earned by being respectful and respectable. That's how it works in the shop, that's how it works in life, that’s the standard we live by. We are a small company made up of good people just like you. Some people forget this. Please don't forget :)
Transparency We do our level best to deliver perfection in product and service & also to represent our products accurately. Sometimes we make honest mistakes. We learn from them, communicate clearly, & move forward. We don’t hide behind PR; we walk the walk. Transparency is hard. Sometimes it’s embarrassing. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like the right choice; but we believe in a world where it’s okay to share, help others & own up to our shortcomings.

Pricey but Excellent Penlight for Medical Use
Like the previous reviewer, I also use this in a medical setting, as an MD. I agree with the other reviewer in all respects. I bought this direct from the manufacturer, hence my purchase cannot be verified by Amazon.I bought the Preon P2 mk3 after a long search for a penlight to use for medical applications. Previously, I used throwaway penlights available in hospital supply closets or cheap lights found on Amazon. As one might expect, these were pretty OK when they worked... or rather, if they worked. The battery life on the average medical penlight is as fleeting as the pupil response you get from its feeble, flickering diode. They would start out looking reliable, only to inexplicably become useless after a day or two sitting in my white coat pocket. Incredibly frustrating. In retrospect, even when the cheapo lights worked, they were usually very blue. Not great for evaluating wounds or mucosa. Then I turned to the modern physician's favorite light: a cell phone. We carry our phones at all times, so the convenience is unrivaled. But they're clumsy and unsanitary — how are you supposed to fingerprint ID-open your phone and access the flashlight while wearing gloves and a gown for the ubiquitous MRSA or VRE-colonized patients? Can you even clean your phone with Purell? Or Oxivir? Who knows. Logistics aside, my iPhone's flashlight is single setting (blinding), casts bluish light, and looks kind of unprofessional (many patients have commented that doctors used to use penlights, now they just use cell phones like your average Joe). A cell phone is a terrible medical light.Enter the Preon P2 mk3. I'm not a flashlight geek, so I can't say much about the beam spread, pattern, and so forth. I included some pictures of the beam at high, mid, and low in case that's useful. The side profile pics are on low. There is some bluish tint visible on the periphery in one of the side profile shots, but you see absolutely none of that when actually directing the light at anything. On to how well the light actually does its job for me. At 1 lumen (firefly mode), the Preon P2 is perfect for eliciting pupil constriction without blinding a patient. Medium works for finding things in a dark patient room e.g. at night without waking the patient. I don't use high or max much in the hospital. They're useful at home or outside though (speaking of which, the P2 can apparently be cleaned with alcohol and possibly other medical cleaners — at least, my anodized black aluminum model can. Can't comment on the copper or nickel). Neutral color temperature and accurate color rendering are added pluses that make evaluating surgical incisions, chronic wounds, mucosa, and so forth easier.Click switch is far better than fumbling with my cell phone ever was. Momentary tailswitch is super useful — I use that feature more than full clicking for on/off. It offers some resistance to press, so you're very unlikely to accidentally activate it. The penlight is almost exactly the length of your average pen and sits perfectly in my front white coat pocket with the tail clip. I have never had it come loose — the clip is great.Would be nice to have a medium/low only mode, but high/med/low works fine. Unlike some other reviewers elsewhere, I didn't have much issue setting up the UI to my preferred mode (high/med/low, and I usually keep it on low for pupil checks). Finally, a note comparing to the classic leading medical penlight, the Welch Allyn. I have seen these used before but never have myself. They cost about the same as the P2 mk3, so potentially there is overlap in the population that would be interested in these, namely a sturdier and higher quality medical penlight albeit for much greater cost than a throwaway. The Welch Allyn has an old-fashioned halogen bulb and produces a warm color temperature. The P2 produces a neutral light. I personally prefer neutral white light for all applications (medical and general flashlight illumination), but others may feel differently. The Welch Allyn is notorious for having parts break, particularly the (expensive) bulb or bulb switch (which is apparently made of plastic rather than the solid brass construction of the rest of the light). Just look at its reviews on Amazon. In comparison, there's nothing about the P2 that makes me concerned about its durability. I still wouldn't drop it if possible, but the whole thing feels solid. The machined grooving helps a little too. In the modern era, I can't see much reason a physician would want to use a lightbulb rather than an LED... but again, maybe that's just my opinion.Overall, would absolutely buy again (in fact, I have been considering picking up a spare). If the price doesn't bother you, very highly recommended as a medical penlight.
