Product Description
The Cosmonaut is a minimal and elegant stylus for touch screen devices. Unlike most styli, which are designed to look and feel like a pen, the Cosmonaut was designed to feel like a dry erase marker, because the experience of drawing on an tablet most closely mirrors the experience of drawing on a whiteboard. The Cosmonaut is great for doodling, sketching, and writing on any touch screen device. The shaft has a comfortable rubber grip that feels great to hold for people of all ages, including children and the elderly. The tip is responsive and glides effortlessly over the glass screen. The Cosmonaut will work on nearly any capacitive touch screen device, including the iPad and Kindle Fire. It does not require special software; it will work wherever your finger works. Designed and manufactured in America.

Pros: Relatively cheap, satisfying weight and feel in the hand, rubber tip is not mushy like other styli
Cons: Some people will find the size and heft off-putting (about the size of a dry erase marker), not magnetic, no cap
Overall: I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this thing delivered to my door. Is this a crayon? It was a far cry from the Adonit Jot Pro+ that I previously had to return due to defects in what I’ll assume is design (the disc no longer made proper contact with the ball tip). It had none of the fancy stylings of other styli in this price range, and was also not magnetized. Ultimately I decided to give it a fair shot, I did after all need something to take notes on my iPad with. After about two weeks of every day 1-2 use I can honestly say it is a great writing device.
Is the Cosmonaut on par with the Adonit Jot Pro+? Yes… and no. On its best day, it is really close to beating the JP+. In fact I’d say the only thing that is holding it back is the somewhat odd size (you do get used to it though, quicker than you think). The reason I prefer this over the JP+ however, is because it is reliably great. The JP+ is just SLIGHTLY better… WHEN it works, which is not very often if you read the reviews (I’ve had two JP+ and returned both because they stopped working). The Cosmonaut requires no upkeep, no discs to buy, no ball to keep clean, and most importantly: it never randomly stopped working. If for some reason it ever does stop working, or breaks, the company will send you a new one I’m told.
If you need a stylus for writing, this is the best one I’ve tried so far. It writes great and rarely skips (only happened once or twice). It allows me to write quickly and quietly using Notability on the iPad.
In use the stylus has, as mentioned, the requirement of an initial downward pressure...I had thought this, before purchase, inconsequential, but in use it very quickly became very irritating. Like all the rubber tipped styli I have owned (and at this point there have been many) the ease of movement against the screen decreased rapidly to the point that, within a month, I felt I was having to pull way too hard to move it across the screen - almost as if I were trying to work on a very dirty screen. I also quickly found that the amazingly comfortable size of the stylus made it difficult to see the tip if I were trying to accurately place any mark or line.
If comfort were the only measure of the usefulness of this product this would easily be my first choice --- since function is probably more important than style I cannot recommend this stylus.
10-25-2013 (UPDATED REVIEW)
I have been meaning to ammend this review for a bit now but somehow that intention never made it to this review. Let me begin by saying that every positive thing I mentioned about this product still, obviously, applies. Based on this original review I was contacted by the OWNERS and they immediately sent two replacement tips. Wanting to use the pen, because of it's comfort, I installed one immediately and found the difference to be incredible! I have used the stylus daily since receiving the tips and I MUST reverse my opinion of this product. I have found NO evidence of ANY issue and am ABSOLUTELY SOLD ON THIS STYLUS.
I also think it incredible that I was contacted by one of the owners of the company so quickly and within days I had my replacement tips and a handwritten letter, making sure that the new tips corrected my problem. The personal attention from the company along with a "fix" for my problem are amazing.
THE STYLUS PERFORMS WONDERFULLY AND THE INTERACTION WITH THE COMPANY AMAZING. THIS IS A PRODUCT THAT I WOULD CERTAINLY RECCOMEND!
If I'm doing something wrong, or if there's an explanation, I would be happy to change my rating. I'm a native Portlander and I would love to support a locally based company, but i can't give misleading reviews.
Update: while researching stylus options for the iPad Air, I have learned that many people are having major issues with different stylus that worked well on past model iPads no longer working on the Air. I have amended my rating to reflect this, as no company should be expected to be able to make a product that will be useful on technology that doesn't exist yet. Studio Neat is a good company, and I didn't say enough about how much I liked the product initially, right down to the packaging.
Apple changed their screen sensitivity on the Air, but it works with a finger, which is all they promise it will do. It also wasn't Studio Neat's problem or responsibility, since they were tonly making a product for older iPads. It's still a bummer that mine isn't working like it used to, but perhaps the rubber nib got stretched out? or it was coated with something and it wore off? I may try ordering a new nib, if they sell them, to see if that changes anything for how it works with my iPad 2. For Air users, you may be out of luck unless Apple has a trick up their sleeve in a software fix? Or Studio Neat has a softer (?) replacement nib that works with the Air?
Update #2: I was contacted by the company (Studio Neat) and asked to send an email regarding my issue. I should have given them the chance to resolve my issue before posting a negative review. I forgot some companies care enough about individual customer care enough to burn a calorie dealing with the people who purchase their products. I've been down that road a few times in the past and it didn't occur to me to give them a chance. I explained my issue and got a reply the same day requesting my address.
A week later I received a new tip for my stylus. It was a bit harder and smoother than the previous one. I switched them out and the difference was immediate. It actually works! This thing works better than it ever did before. I love the form factor. Small hands may or may not agree, but I have big hands and this feels perfect.
The only criticism I have now is that the eraser doesn't work very well (I'm kidding!)
